I like backpacking and camping stoves. I prefer single burner stoves, but I do have some "suitcase" stoves from various manufacturers.
I also like vintage camping gear and equipment.
This channel is to show stoves, stove usage methods, comparisons, reviews (good and bad), and perhaps some camping gear at some point.
My icon pic is a 1970's Trangia 27 kit and a Holubar tent.

I also do vintage air cooled Volkswagen mechanical restoration, so there will probably be some VW videos here as well.

Thanks for watching!

Where you able to repair this radio? I just picked up one from a swapmeet thinking I could use it in my 72 super beetle which doesn't have a radio.. However I'm not sure where the wires go and its missing the faceplate.

my project for today: find TDC for all four cylinders paint a number on the bottom of the pulley, because the baja exhaust is in the way of the top paint a dot on the side, front of the pulley, so I can see where I am while looking at the valves

Thanks for the info. I soldered mine today. I minded that the fabric inside is cotton which can take the heat in normal use when the fuel is keeping it wet, but in the heating for the soldering it could perhaps turn into carbon, so i put my stove in shallow water so it can suck water from the holes while i solder.

I have loved my ~2004 Nova for around 20 years now, and it has been my go to stove. While looking into Trangia and alcohol stoves I learned about the Nova cup that Trangia has and it was all over for me... I have since purchased a 25 kit, a 27 kit, the Nova cup, and an even older Nova off eBay that needs some parts and TLC but it looks like I should be able to get it going. Pretty soon I will be drowning in dependable, modular, Swedish cooksets and stoves that I can mix and match to my hearts content depending on the season and trip type. Sweet! Thanks for the video.... great content and cool red Trangia as well. Cheers

Are the fins or ribbs inside the buner cup higher than the ones in normal Polaris? That was one of the downsides of the Polaris compared with Nova. Shorter fins made the stove less efficient burning heavier fuels and also longer priming times.

I came to your channel because I found one of these exact same stoves together with the windscreen, two of the same SIGG fuel bottles, the fuel pump, and a stainless steel SIGG Tourist mess kit for a whopping $3 dollars at a yard sale. I brought it home, and it fired up perfectly. I'm so happy with this purchase, and I hope to get good use out of this new (to me) kit. I knew it was some great gear, but you helped me to learn a little bit more about it. Thank you for the informative video. 👍🙂👍

Appreciate your vvidoe, I'm trying to find out timing on a bus 2lt. There aren't many that don't use beetle engine. Also I've replaced my dizzy with a electronic. I had moved the engine without the dizzy in motor. The rotor points 90 past tdc. But my open inlet valve is open with spark plug removed in no 1 pot. Regards

People that are bothered with the discoloration of metals from the heat and or flux, instead of just worrying about sealing the stove from leaking, should try to invent a new alloy that does not discolor from...anything; good luck.

You don't need to wire the cap in place. After fitting you just twist it and the flare around the bottom holds it in place with the two raised pieces in the flame spreader. HTH

I think it is only possible due to the Primus fuel line/pump, since it includes the threads for the Butane canister.

Update .. Carbon Felt. Since my previous response, I filled my Trangia Burner with a combination of Ceramic Wool and Carbon Felt .. the Wool at the bottom, topped with a tight roll of Carbon Felt. So far, very good results. 'Blooming' takes a little longer .. it still burns with gusto, especially if enclosed in a windscreen, albeit, somewhat more gently, especially when using the simmer ring. The gentler burn suits my style of cooking and is thus for me, a bonus. Lowest temperature test so far has been 3°C and I rustled up an Oats, Toast and Coffee Breakfast on the river bank without a hitch. Am waiting for some sub-zero temps to test further. A huge Bonus is the reduced fuel 'spillage' hazard .. something of note, considering the Swiss absolute lack of a sense of humour with those who set their forests and the grass in their recreational areas afire 😏.

👍👍👍 That's a new one to me. Looks like the illegitimate result of an illicit meeting between my Optimus 8R Hunter and Trangia 28 Mini .. will have to have a word there 🤨 😁. I could have mentioned that using a lid would have appreciably reduced the boiling time .. but I won't 😊. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

The pink came from the flux cleaning the metal. Do not use your finger to apply the flux, your finger has oils on it that can transfer to the metal causing leaks. instead use a quality Q-tip or a flux brush.

👍👍👍 .. interesting .. thanks for sharing. I've been mulling over doing something similar .. perhaps now is the time to give it a go. I recently read a post from a guy from Taiwan who is playing around with using 'wicking' in his Trangia Burner. His setup consisted of Steel Wool in the bottom of the Burner, rolled Carbon Felt on top and then topped with a disc of SS Mesh cut to a snug fit which keeps everything in place. I presume that the Steel Wool allows for liquid fuel 'sloshing' at the bottom and thus good 'wicking' up to the external Jets whilst the Carbon Felt acts as the internal 'Wick' .. at the same time protecting the Steel Wool from direct contact with the flame. His comparison test looked impressive .. the 'wicked' burner giving a 'bluer' flame than the unwicked one. Blooming was good. A test on a Trangia Copy (w alternate smaller jet holes) did not produce an as effective 'Bloom'. An additional bonus was his 'knock over and roll' test. Absolutely no spillage from a newly-filled burner. This carries weight with me as here in Switzerland, the Authorities have absolutely no sense of humour with those setting fire to their forest, albeit accidental .. with eye-watering fines being the order of the day. He did say that he was experimenting with using Ceramic / Glass Wool in place of the Carbon Felt / Steel Wool .. so I'm waiting to see how that turns out.

👍👍👍 Nice, very nice .. thanks for sharing 😊. I have the Optimus 8R Hunter Stove .. similar Burner Mechanism. Bought new in the mid-70's and still in regular use. Also in my my kit is a little Trangia 28-t Mini Set .. love it! Complaining .. some will 'chirp' about just about everything. In this day of 'millisecond gratification', having to wait or pre-plan for a anything is considered close to a disaster 🙄. But then, I was born in '50, we grew up differently, accepted and adapted accordingly 😏. This morning's 'brunch' (Oats with additions) is right now ready to be done using a Trangia-clone kettle and a Tatonka 18cm SS bowl and a home-made alcohol burner. I think I'll take out the 8R tomorrow. Once again, a good share .. take care ..

Great video - I have 1974 beetle with tons of hesitation - been through carb, fuel pump, now going for timing. I have a few questions: 1. Is there a good simple diagram to confirm I have all hoses in the right places? 2. I notice another 1/2" port (top right) on fan shroud - what is that for? 3. I have a metal tube (maybe 3/8") coming up from the deck plate (drivers side to left of dist) and lands in a lil pot (with a lil nipple on top of it) mounted just behind the carb. I have not seen this on any bugs any videos. Is there a way I can send a photo? 4. Will timing just go out? Thanks the TDC explanation was the best I've seen... Love the crankshaft keyway check, too.

For preheating i use the wick from a chafer fuel tin in a cigar shaped hip flask. It lasts a lot longer than alchohol and is much cheaper in the UK. It takes under 2 minutes and then i just push in the wick to snuff it and close the hip flask.

I think I like the standard way with the factory preheater better because the carbon felt will take up volume in the cup and reduce the amount of time it will operate.
