    Winning the bid is great. Even better is making a new handle and hanging the head so nicely. Great job. I only have the Norlund Hatchet. Not sure as to the exact name but It is stamped Norlund. Great brand too bad they went under. ☹ Keep up the good work. Dave

    Thank you for all your kind words. I appreciate you coming by the shop and sharing your thoughts. That’s great that you have one of those Norlunds. It is too bad that they went out of business, but I would prefer that then for them to lower their quality and start producing junk. Take good care of that little Norlund you have. Thanks again for stopping by and have a great week.

    Well done as always ! Fun fact , the individual who kinda started the whole Norland co. started in my hometown. Mann axe co. Bellefonte PA. The road he started on is named Axman road. Then the co.was moved to Lewistown PA . about 30 min.away.

    Congrats on winning that auction. The axe turned out great considering all the rust and pitting. Like the outcome of the handle it has a good warm look to it - guess the linseed does it. Like the innovative work aids you have created to help with things like driving out the handle and clamping the axe in a vise.

    That turned out extremely nice. I'm glad you finally found a cabin axe. I have tried bidding on a few in the past for you, but they get out of hand so quickly. The wooden vice blocks work so nicely I love the set I made. Great video as usual keep it up.

    That is awesome! That one may be my favorite. I didn’t know Norlund made that type with the phantom bevels. A little saddle soap and some conditioner and that sheath should be good as new. Your Norlund collection is coming along nicely. Do you have their fish/frog gig? Love the axe vise! I like the little knife you used to open the box. What was that? Take care 👍🏼😃

    So glad you enjoyed the video and this model of Norlund. If you go hunting for one, good luck! I wasn’t going to try to fix up that sheath because it looked like it was too far gone but if you think that will work, I will definitely try the saddle soap and conditioner. As for the little knife that I used, it is a Stanley Hand Tools 10-049 Locking Blade Pocket Knife. This one is gray mine is black. I don’t know if the numbers change based on the color. Always great to have you stop by for a visit. Hope you have a great week my friend.

    Great video. I ain't smart enough to make that axe vice holder. A leather hinge? Do you make your wedges? Probably ain't smart enough to do that either.😅

  • @toolscouter

    @toolscouter

    4 ай бұрын

    Thank you, and I’m sure you are plenty smart enough. A lot of it has to do with the tools you have available to you. Most people, even professionals, simply clamp, the axe handle to a bench and sharpen it that way. Yes, I do make my wedges and it’s as simple as using a bandsaw. Thanks so much for stopping by and have a great week.

    I picked up an axe head in Ohio one time. I think I paid five dollars for it. Got it home cleaned it up and saw that it was a Norland. It was new to me. I put a 24 inch handle on it and just love the way it turned out, they have very thin bits, but when I did some research the steel quality is impeccable and the eyes are oversized so that more wood from the handle goes through them and makes them stronger. These things made this axe my favorite. After further research, I learned that the developer of this brand had taken a trip to Sweden and researched the manufacture of their axes. When he came back to the states, he developed the Norlund brand. He commissioned Mann edge, tool company in Lewiston Pennsylvania to make them. They are known for quality. They produced axes that were of old time quality, but because of the chainsaw were no longer as much in demand. For me, all of the quality and experience of 150 to 200 years went into the development of these axes at the end of the heyday of the axe. This is why they are my favorite and it may just be a personal thing. I’m sure they’re not the best of all time and that there are other brands that are a better quality even than these but for me they’re my favorite. I don’t like a thick bit or a small eye. I’m no expert, but there’s my unprofessional opinion. Hope that makes sense and thanks for stopping by.

    Is your mystery Norlund not the "Tomahawk" model? I have one that has a 26" handle, but haven't weighed the head. It is a Hudson Bay design from what I have read. I think the use of "Tomahawk" by Norlund has confused folk into expecting a shorter one handed axe, but it is not. Mine is clearly marked with the "Tomahawk" model as well as "Norlund" on it. I tried to message you on Instagram last summer, but you may have not seen it.
