Vintage Mego: Captain Americar (Worlds Greatest Superheroes)

Ойын-сауық

Vintage Mego this week looks at the Mego World's Greatest Superheroes Captain Americar, which was released in 1976 and only sold for one brief year. Why did Spider-Man and Captain America even get cars? We discuss that and more in the week's installment.

The Captain Americar was my first tragic “figure sold separately” moment. I loved the toy, but never had the figure.

Would've been better off finding a smaller scale figure to put in it, always found it a shame how bad the scale of the cars were to the figures, I get the purist charm of it too but I just think they deserved better

These Bat-vehicles and other Bat-things (and Star Trek utility belt items) were in every other yard sale I went to back in the 70's and I was lucky enough to eventually cobble together a small collection (in various rough conditions). The drawback in having all of those 60's leftovers was it made convincing parents to fork out money for the new (70's) stuff next to impossible.

Marvel found the idea of a "Spider-Man Car" so amusing that they made it a somewhat hilarious plot point in one issue of Marvel Team Up. The plot being Spider-Man somehow gets given a "Spider Mobile". But he Peter Parker has never learned to drive. So he tries to get Johnny Storm, the Human Torch to teach him. It goes badly. Also in a surprising lack of synergy Mego for some reason didn't use the van molds for Captain America. Because Captain America had a van in the comics. It was even a centerpiece of that horrible and short lived live action Captain America tv show (some markets got it as 2 tv movies instead of a handful of episodes.)

I saw this in my marvel comics on the advertisement pages (Illustrations only - never a real photo) when I was a child in the early 70's. Cap and Spidey being my two favorite hero's of all time. But they were so rare I never even laid eyes on one till I started collecting 20 years later. My wife got it for me a few Christmas ago. ( As I could never justify paying such a high price) She found one loose and shield deflector in perfect working order! It was a grail type piece for me! Great video!!!! Thanks!!!

Another great vid! ONLY saw the Captain Americar in the the Heroes World comics catalogs. Got my Toy Ventures issue #2 yesterday! Mine was so hot off the press, I could STILL smell the printers ink! Fantastic issue too. Love that coverage of Monster Squad. Hit me right in the feels. So glad I pre-ordered mine. Thanks for the extras in my order too.

I just barely missed the Mego Superhero figure toy line but my older cousin gave me his entire Mego set as a hand me down. Cap pretty much only rides motorcycles but a captain America action figure with a Captain America-Mobile is still cool. Being a Marvel Fanboy from the very start, the Marvel figures that really spoke to me were the Mattel Marvel Secret War Action Figures. They weren’t the best but I was able to collect those as a child. The Mego Marvel Figures remained as display items back then and now.

1st Super Great Review 👍🏽 2nd Captain America was/is my favorite Super Hero of all time and having the 8 & 12 inch mego of him as a kid was some great play time for me. The mego Cap Car was one thing I always wanted to get my mitts on. I had the batmobile/helo/motorcycle everything for Batman and it use to piss me off that cap only had the car and I couldn't find it in any of the stores in Nyc😡but now I know why, bc It didnt do well and was discontinued fast.😔oh well it was great to see it and the Beautiful box on this review👍🏽

I remember a discount chain called Ayr-Way (they were bought out by Target in the early 80s) having all three of these vehicles. Green Arrow was my favorite character and figure at the time and I have no idea how I didn't end up with the Arrowcar.

Cap had a car in some of the Golden Age issues. It wasn't shown all that often and there was anything special about it, as it was just simply a normal 1940s era 'large roadster' that was always shown in all that much detail, but it was a (minor) thing for a short while. Normally Cap and Bucky tended to simply jog or sprint everywhere, or indeed use a motorcycle. Nuff Said!

  • @RogueTwo

I'm kind of surprised that they didn't give Cap a motorcycle. Wasn't there an Action Jackson motorcycle already in their inventory that they could have simply repainted/retooled as they did the vans? Of course it probably wouldn't have quite been in the price point that they were going for with those vehicles. I never had this. At that point I was much more of a DC kid thanks to Superfriends and the old live action Batman show, and didn't know much Marvel outside of Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four. A pity, it looks neat. In would have begged for the Arrow Car if I'd ever seen it on the shelf. Cool video. Thanks.

I never saw any of these cars in stores. The Spider-Man car was probably a popular vehicle because Spider-Man was the most popular of those three heroes in the 70s and he did have that cool Spider-Mobile dune buggy.

There was a Corgi vehicle of Captain America basically driving a missile painted in patriotic colors. I so wanted that in the Mego scale and was disappointed that the Captain Americar didn't look like that. Would have had to order it from Heros' World too which was a nightmare both times my mom did it for me. But a friend got one about five years ago for his collection along with the Green Arrow car. Now I kinda want them. lol.

While I do consider the Captain Americar to be a beautiful work of art for a toy, I would just as sooner have used a blue BatCycle minus the decals and sidecar and use that for my Captain America MEGO figure. But it's still a nice looking collectible.

Strange that the Spider-car doesn't really resemble the Spider-mobile in the comics. I thought Marvel introduced the Spider-mobile because they were approached by a toy company, whom I assume was Mego. So why not sync up the designs?
