LEAD IN :
There are very few places left in the world where Aramaic, the language of Jesus Christ, is still spoken.
The people of the village of Maaloula in northern Syria speak the ancient language in everyday life.
STORYLINE:
It feels like history has stopped in the small Syrian village of Maaloula, some 50 kilometres (31 miles) north of the capital Damascus.
Along with the neighbouring villages of Jabadin and Bakha, it is one of the last places in the world where Aramaic, the language of Jesus Christ, is still spoken.
Maaloula means "the entrance" in Aramaic, referring to its dramatic location at the entrance to a rocky gorge.
Perched on the slopes of the Qalamoun Mountains at an altitude of 1,500 meters, Maaloula overlooks a vast green carpet of fig trees, grapevines and poplar trees.
With its blue-roofed houses nestled into the rock, Maaloula a picturesque village, is one of Christianity's oldest sites.

I have a very close friend who is a Muslim Syrian. He is from Aleppo. He used to tell me all the time that, during his childhood, he saw monks and imams, Christians and Muslims, churches and mosques co-exist in peace and harmony. I realized, it is not religion dividing people, it's people's own twisted thinking and choices.

Yoshev Haaretz the people? these people, i agree. however Muslims following Islam and not what the Quran and other Islamic literature calls hypocrites, but true followers are only to claim peace if they can't win a war. then they wait till they can. like muhammid did. there's plenty more.. point is true Muslims are at war with infidels hypocrites... lizards.. if you believe that bio of muhammid... see acts17apologetics yt channel.

505 Jesus is more than a prophet he is God I don't care if they're hypocrites or not. I will respect those people more than I respect most of my fellow Christians. Those people may not Be Christians, but they follow the teachings of Christ. The Samaritan was better than the priest and the Levite.

Thank you for this beautiful video! It is so wonderful to hear that elderly gentleman say that everyone Christian and Muslim are all the same, are all brothers, there is no difference between them - how wonderful to note that they live in peace and harmony with each other, which you dont see in the Christian community in the west and in other parts of the world, there is so much division, separation and disconnection. The church has become so driven by its own agenda and programs, focused on itself like an isolated group of individuals. We as the Christian community have much to learn from humble people and communities like these about the true meaning of the church, our sense of community and belonging to the family of God and living in peace and harmony with each other as Christians and believers in Jesus Christ, following the Word of God.

I wonder why the man refers to the language as "Suryani"? In my time at Ma'aloula in the 90's, the language was only known as "Aramaya" (which the old man refers to it as multiple times). Is this possibly because of influence from Assyrians/Syriacs? I know the villagers are also picking up on practices we do, like Akitu Festival (which they never practiced before).

  • @yammayamma6636

    @yammayamma6636

    4 жыл бұрын

Are you sure they called it "Aramaya"? "Aramaya" would be either in Old Aramaic or NENA dialects/languages. Wouldn't it be "Aromay " in Western Neo-Aramaic? Anyways, Arabic "Suryani" refers to Aramaic and Christian Aramaic speaking people/Christian Arameans in general or often describes the people of the Syriac-Orthodox church. I don't think Arabs made a distinction here, and the inhabitants of Ma'aloula, Jubb'adin and Bakah also adopted it in their native tongue hence "Suryon". The proper way to say Syrian in Western Neo-Aramaic would be "Suray" or "Suro" (the Syrian language). If I am not mistaken, only the Muslims of Jubb'adin celebrate Akitu, because they are in touch with Assyrian scholars. My family are from Al-Hasake, we have never celebrated Akitu either or heard of it before. I only know off Syriacs who regard themselves as Assyrians celebrate it.

Yamma Yamma yes, they called it Aramaya/Aromay. Point being, they did not refer to themselves or their language as “Siryani”; that’s not even an Aramaic word, it’s Arabic. The “Aramaya” identification was practically non-existent back then because the “Aramean” movement (which began in Europe) didn’t have any influence in the early 90’s among Syriac Orthodox members, at least not when I was Syria. “Siryani” in Arabic also doesn’t translate to “Aramaic”. “Suraya” is only translated as “Syrian” by some Western academics and even then, it does not refer, in any way, to the present-day state of Syria. Also, the Syriac Orthodox Church has worked with the Syrian govt. and village of Ma’aloula, and Ma’aloula Aramaic is heavily influenced by Arabic, so that is a possible reason as to why “Siryani” is present in their vocabulary. Kha B’Nisan (the proper name for Akitu) was never originally celebrated by this village, either, and I’m not sure why exactly they started it. Lots of influence from the Syriac Orthodox Church going on, and there are no Assyrian scholars working with Ma’aloula, lol. The only people in the community who claim Ma’aloula are “Syriacs” from the Syriac Orthodox Church, solely based on their fallacious and recent “Aramean” identification (even though these people are mostly Sunni Muslims with some Arab ancestry). Some Assyrians celebrate Kha B’Nisan, some don’t, but it’s not a recent invention (only calling it by the original Akkadian word, “Akitu”, is). We’ve been through enough persecution where most aspects of our culture and heritage have been lost, only clinging to the religious aspects.

Think of aramaic as a language family (much like Arabic) with plenty of dialects. Both belong to the language categories "semitic." That would lead you to understand this is an Aramaic language, however it is properly called in it's own language "sureth," so you can say Surit or Syriac in English. Assyrians call their dialect of Surit Assyrian. So quite frankly it is both, it is a member of the aramaya family of languages, (which includes western Aramaic and galilean aramaic as well as the NENA dialects) and the languages are various dialects of Sureth.

@Gabro Ego i think there's a good reason why a holy book from God should be preserved in its original language and not be substituted by human translations. There could be a lot of misinterpretations and lost contents. Imagine it like a poet, a joke, or just any intricate literature works that often times, doesn't translate well from one language to another. It should be kept original while the translations are added accompanying it. King James might have good intentions but his method was wrong.
