    As much as like to see a new challenger to the Crown, it is undeniable that Nepo so consistent and sharp in all these candidates tournaments that he definately deserves all the wins.

    One of the big reasons Nepo is on track to win three (!) straight Candidates is that he is by far the best at taking advantage of the time control, i.e. no increment until move 41. The others are just so used to that 30-second buffer.

  • @allykid4720

    @allykid4720

    Yes, but previous candidates had a time control with the increment, and he still managed to win both. More like the winner-takes-all format suits Nepo: other players also should play for the win and have to take risks, where Nepo can seize his chances like in this game. Solid, drawish games like in Tata steel tournament just to maintain the upper-half position in the scoresheet would be boring for Nepo and give him little chances to win, but would be good for a player like Anish.

    Love the analysis, GM King, please keep up the good work! Here is my thought, Vidit tried something different to pull Nepo and his Petroff Defense into uncharted waters, I thought he succeeded very well and created a dynamic position with chances for both. In fact, Vidit missed winning positions a couple of times and gave up advantages as well. Vidit's strategic opening worked out well, this is just a case of the player making the second to last mistake winning.

    30:50 what a cinematic way to finish off this game! And yet another game review that balanced analysis with brevity! Maybe the engine drawing line after Vidit missed the final exchange sac (59. Rxc3) was similarly outrageous to Carlsen-Caruana Game 6? Vidit had 1:31 left when he missed Rxc3, there's no additional time (usually 15 min) after move 60 as was the case in Madrid 2022 and in many other tournaments. Only the 30 min added after move 40 plus the increment

    Great video as ever! I'm not sure I believe you though when you say around 18:23, "Nepo didn't calculate it either." I'm sure he must have done a small calculation before playing d5; I guess he saw the forcing line was winning a piece and stopped his calculation there without analysing the resulting position.

    c4 looked like the right choice with the double pawn....like Daniel King said it was a mistake structurally there are better moves. Watching the game LIVE the engine eval bar stayed dead even draw after the move c4. Engines do a better job at holding together dubious positions than humans... can't always equate the engine evaluation to play by human

    With 3 rounds to go, expect the unexpected. A win by Abasov with the white pieces today is possible, and may happen, as all his opponents from now will overpress. Likewise, Firouzja is looking dangerous, with nothing to lose. These two will decide who wins the candidates.

    Bad chess? Maybe if you measure by precision and accuracy. But several in this group are opening that this is a human competition and humans cannot be expected to be as perfect as machines so why not pose difficult problems for your opponent? And, sometimes the best move is not apparent. Even the chess engine Leela was able to overcome an obstacle improving play by randomizing decisions slightly. Instead of strictly choosing the best calculated result, if calculations return more than one nearly equal result, it can pay to choose a slightly inferior move Even for a machine
