-----TODAY’S LESSON
In today’s lesson, we're going to talk about the new rules to follow this year while attending a Zoom call. This video is ideal for professionals who need to do video conference calls as part of their job.
Video meetings have become more popular since the Coronavirus pandemic. After a year of lockdowns, we've all had a lot of experience on Zoom. We have now reached a point where there are no more excuses for bad practices and manners. You must present a professional image during video calls in 2021.
It's likely you've seen examples of poor manners on Zoom. I speak to students and professionals from many different countries, and I got their opinions on this too. So, this video contains a good mix of experiences on what should be the social etiquette (French word for social norms and values) when attending video meetings.
After this lesson, you will avoid reflecting badly on yourself and your job, by keeping these Zoom rules and video call etiquette in mind.

Great tips! - regarding the setup and interaction with it: I found that the ones making the greatest impact are audio, lighting, the angle of the camera to one's face and looking into the lens when speaking. Brilliant points.

Thanks for the video. I agree with everything except for dress code. Personally I think people should wear what they feel most comfortable wearing, but should choose something respectable. A plain polo t-shirt or at most a shirt for most meetings is fine. (for a male) Changing into formal attire is just not practical and may even come across as being a little pompous. I simply don't have time to do that during my work schedule. Plus, in this summer heat it would not be wise especially considering most homes in the UK are not air conditioned. What are your thoughts about not using a video camera and only using a microphone? Is this poor etiquette? Prior to lockdown, this was the norm. Video conferences were few and far between. Personally I don't see why people should feel obliged to switch on their camera if they're not comfortable doing so.

Zoom has been a great tool this past year or so, and yes it is easy to get lazy about things as you are in your home mostly. I have 6 children...can you imagine the havoc they would reek if i let them in the room on a Zoom call?....solid advice J.

Another very helpful video Jade. I think you are quite right to mention the sound of babies crying. I suspect that we are genetically programmed to respond to that sound so if there is the sound of a crying baby in the background of a Zoom call it will be very difficult for other people to concentrate on what a speaker is saying. You pack a lot of good points into your videos - I hope people appreciate them!

Hi Jade! Thanks a lot for your videos. Regarding drinks while having a Zoom meeting, in many countries -the US especially- it is acceptable to have a drink while working with other people. Perhaps participants could say at the beginning of the session: "I hope you don't mind my mug while we are working"?

Love all of Jade's tips from this and her other videos-- however, the one thing that I found a bit offensive was the 'boomer tech' reference (along with a picture of an elderly gentleman staring hopelessly at his laptop). Saying 'Boomer tech' is the same as if someone would refer to 'women drivers' when describing people with bad driving habits. It's a derogatory expression that, like all stereotypes, incorrectly and unfairly lumps all people over a certain age into one convenient category. And it's also unnecessary to include in the video... why not simply suggest that everyone should know how to use the features in platforms such as zoom before the virtual meeting actually starts? After all, I know more than a few Millennials who periodically have tech issues during zoom meetings due to errors on their part.

Jade, you do really good videos on language learning and accents. The other day I watched the one on South London accent and I was wondering the entire time what on earth is so negative about this accent? As you said in the clip, it is part of your identity and your regional background makes you unique. Anyway, I wish that at least a tine fraction of the people I have been in video calls with had seen your video on video confernce etiquette. These people just don't seem to get it. Their bad and annoying behaviour is repetitive on every single call they join. I'm tending not to join anymore. Continuous lack of self reflection just drives me up the wall.

After over 2-years of remote working with daily video calls, I've shared some additional tips below. Sit still, if you can - on camera every gesture or mannerism is intensified, e.g. touching your face is very noticeable. I find this hard, as I get itchy skin and also self sooth in awkward situations, but it's worth trying. Be kind to others who do not present in the ideal way, those who are neurodiverse or disabled, may be noticeably different to others. I often turn the camea off if I'm having an attack of dizziness or nausea, or abdominal pain as otherwise, I'm gurning. I also often struggle to sit up straight and sometimes have to slouch or recline, which could be mistaken for arrogance. Try getting the organisation to agree to some video conferencing standards, e.g. using the raise hand feature instead of jumping in, as with a lot of participants you'll just end up talking over each other. As noted above, try to be inclusive and understand that behaviours may have other explanations and what might not have been prominent in a physical room or which could have been explained, might lead to unfair judgments on a video call. Having better etiquette over whose turn it is to speak is also more inclusive to deaf people or those who are hard of hearing, as there's no subtitles and conferencing usually gives priority on screen to whoever is speaking, if everyone talks at once this doesn't happen and lip reading isn't possible (in addition to the sound being poorer quality). At home, consider adapting different rooms and try to have as much flexibility as possible. It was a running battle with my family for them to not interrupt, or not to take my work seriously, though I now have a choice of room depending upon our schedule and have multiple pieces of equipment (not cheap I know). Regarding 'boomer tech', ironically most people can increase their broadband performance by not using WiFi and instead using a ethernet patch cable to connect directly to their router. It may seem like a backward step, but even with a relatively poor Internet speed, the dropouts will be gone. A lot of new laptops don't have an ethernet port so you may have to buy a USB dock that has one. I paid an electrician to put some ethernet sockets in the parts of my house that are furthest from the router and the Internet is now seenless. I'd tried a WiFi extender but it just wasn't reliable enough. A common fault on Windows PCs is no sound, which is often due to not having a working sound driver for all of the ports - this can take hours to fix, so make sure all your equipment works before an important call. On my PC, I had to delete the driver and install a new one, unfortunately it didn't work straight out of the box.

@@JadeJoddle You're welcome. It's required continuous adaptation since the first days of COVID lockdown with laptops balanced on cake tins. Regarding some of your other points, I still wear shirts or polo shirts for a lot of calls (never pyjamas) and calls are different in nature with external stakeholders than internal. Our internal calls vary between those that are more informal 'cats and coffee' scenarios and others which more formal or task focused, though where it's informal or social, that'd usually be established within the meeting invite.

I really like your lessons, and as I'm creating now a portfolio for my possible future career as a translator, I thought I could ask for your permit to collaborate. Russian is my native language, I've already worked as a proofreader and a journalist. I write and proofread everything with care, so I thought I could make decent Russian subtitles for this video and I'd be grateful if you could use it and if I could refer to it as my work.
