[0:00] Lesson Intro
My name is Jade Joddle. I'm an accent and English teacher, and I grow my students' confidence so that they can shine when they're speaking English.
In this lesson I'm going to discuss what I like about the reading aloud method to improve your speaking skills. We're going to cover who this method is for and I'm going to specifically recommend a resource that you can use for your speaking practice.
This method is good for two reasons. First of all, this method actually works very well, but students don't know about it or don't try it out. Secondly, I read aloud myself in English and I really enjoy it, and I think it's good for the voice too! So I'm going to share my love of reading aloud with you through this lesson.
[1:30] Who Reading Aloud is Good For
Reading aloud to improve your speaking skills is ideal for students who are weak in their speaking skills. You may be able to read and write with confidence, but when it comes to speaking, you're a bit more nervous.
[2:41] The Benefits of Reading Aloud to Improve Speaking
1. Reading aloud is an active method.
2. There should be no pressure when reading aloud.
3. Reading aloud gives you hours and hours of practice.
[5:10] Why Don't Students Read Aloud?
The reason reading aloud to improve your speaking skills isn’t widely used or known is because many students don’t know what material to read.
[6:24] Recommended Reading Aloud Material
You have to find something that you can read aloud that's at your level and that you will be able to manage. I would strongly recommend a book called Short Stories in English, and it's by @OllyRichards www.amazon.co.uk/Short-Storie...

    I read poetry and song lyrics aloud. Ted Hughes, Bob Dylan(1962-2001 Lyrics). Leonard Cohen. Also Shakespeare. I am a native English speaker. I encouraged teenagers to reading aloud by introducing them to an anthology of verse.

    When my mother (RIP) went to the cinema when she was a child, they still use to show the silent films with subtitles at the bottom of the screen. She mentioned to me how some kids would read the subtitles out loud and be told by everyone else to shut up.

    English is my 4rth language, I must admit I'm not still fluent at speaking it nor in articulating my thoughts at audiences in a way that they can understand and feel the emotions and ideas behind my message, thus I search for tips on how to read aloud clearly and fluetly. Well let me get this straight I do really appreciate your effort in making this content (2yrs ago) but Im a little bit unsatisfied all I learned was a bunce of reasons why the method of speaking aloud was helpful and the reasons why most of the students fail. Well I was expecting of clues, tips and important details to remember when reading aloud such as: intonation, giving life to the story or text you are reading, managing your breathing when reading through the help of puntuations. As to the book you are recommending isn't it more fun to read a book or any reading materials that interest us? ma'am I will really appreciate it if you give me a link of your videos if you happen to already uploaded a video I was looking for about a specific tips and things to remember when reading aloud, considering the fact that this video has been uploaded 2yrs ago. May you have a good day ma'am and may the blessing of God be upon you, thanks in advance.🥰❤️ (hoping for your reply it would be a great help)

    Good information When do you think a person should try to speak their target language? After a month of honest 1 hour per day study - 2 months? Or perhaps what level of language understanding and / or perception of pronounciation /accent is a good time to begin speaking so you don't get locked in to a bad habits that may be harder to correct down the road.

    1 hour reading aloud practice in a single reading session is much too much. The chapters in the recommended book will take about 25 mins. But if your reading is slower, then stop after 25 min. You’ll make your voice tired otherwise.

    The main thing regarding weak speaking skills is not to enter overwhelming situations. If you have another beginner to chat to in your target language that will be fine.

    @@JadeJoddleThank You - That is great advice - cheque's in the mail... However - would patterning your speaking learning practice from another novice not inevitably skew you to begin your speaking of TL (in my case Spanish) with poor pronunciation and poor accent. In the long run that is what I am trying to avoid. I say this as I still can not beat out the Anglicized accent when I speak the French that I learned a few generations ago. Secondary - where does one find a novice speaker at my level in my TL in the wild?

    So: 1) you don’t recommend recording and playing it back? 2) How can you notice your pronunciation mistakes? I mean, there’s no one else to correct you. I’m a bit autistic, and I hate meeting with people, and the problem I have (with other languages mainly) is that I don’t have any speaking skills at all. The same happens with writing. I can write a long resume, on even an essay, and I would think to myself that I have no mistakes, but even though I reread 5 fives and corrected the errors I would have found, there would still be errors.they just would remain unnoticed. So, these are the problems I encounter and I the questions I have, pertaining to the usage of your method.

  • @JadeJoddle

    @JadeJoddle

    Recording and playing it back is useful but not for speaking fluency. It should only be done occasionally and specifically for pronunciation training. When someone learns to speak in real life (interacting with others) they also make many mistakes and are often not corrected.

    My reading aloud would conflict with my current goal of speed reading in which one is supposed to suppress their inner monologue so as to achieve a higher word-per-minute reading count. How would I conciliate both of these goals?

  • @JadeJoddle

    @JadeJoddle

    2 жыл бұрын

    Reading aloud is not something that should be done at speed. Maybe try to see your reading aloud practice and speed reading practice as separate things and then treat them as such.
