Victory in Jesus- Congregational Singing

Музыка

"Victory in Jesus" sung by Cleveland Baptist Church, Sunday night, August 13th, 2006. See words below.
I heard an old old story
How a Saviour came from glory
How He gave His life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me
I heard about His groaning
And His precious blood's atoning
Then I repented of my sin
And won the victory
Chorus:
O victory in Jesus
My Saviour forever
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him
He plunged me to victory
Beneath the cleansing flood
I heard about His healing
Of His cleansing power revealing
How He made the lame to walk again
And caused the blind to see
And then I cried 'Dear Jesus
Come and heal my broken spirit'
And somehow Jesus came
And brought to me the victory
I heard about a mansion
He has built for me in glory
And I heard about the streets of gold
Beyond the crystal sea
About the angels singing
And the old redemption story
And some sweet day I'll sing up there
The song of victory

This hymn brings me back to the "good old days," which I would just as soon forget!! (,kidding) I really like these, but I don't know why (all of a sudden) I am craving old hymns like a starving man? All I know is that when I'm listening to these old hymns, the peace of God hits me like a truck!!

The Lord ministers through this music, because it has doctrinal truth and does not have the sound and beat of the world! Keep feeding yourself with the old hymns and most importantly, the Word of God!

Very few church choirs sing this song in the correct time. And yet again, here's another... 'Save a Wretch' is written with a dotted 8th, a 16th and a half note.

You're absolutely correct! One day while I was looking through the hymnbook, I realized that I've never heard this hymn sung the way it's written. I've asked a few songleaders why we do it this way, and they didn't know why. I wonder who started it and why very few people seem to care that it's wrong.

i dont care how any church choir or any one person plays or sings this song or any song as long as it touches their spirit and heart giving them what they need or what they search for while bringing them closer to God and Jesus. thank you God for sending your son. Thank you Jesus for dying on cross for sins so that may have eternal life....

This is the Cleveland Baptist Church, located in Brooklyn, Ohio (a suburb of Cleveland). I agree, I wish more people had the joy of the Lord on their countenances when they sing, but we still sing all the old hymns in our services! :)

Thanks for the info, stllamazed27! I am also a Baptist, and I have been a music leader in several churches. So I know "how it is" in most Baptist churches. I think many people are just concentrating on their singing, and they are not "singing to an audience or to a camera", etc. And most have no idea what they look like when they are singing. I have tried hard to change that part of the "Baptist culture" whenever I am behind the pulpit. But alas! I think it is mostly a lost cause! ha! ha! But I think the actual singing is the most important part, so when people are "singing out",. I can much more easily overlook the somber countenances part.

Why can't Baptists smile when they sing? I've lead the singing in my church for 10 years and it looks just like this. Everyone is sing about victory looking down at the ground...I don't get it

+Matthew Moore I share your frustration, Matthew. I'm in the choir and I look out on the congregation during the singing, and it is often very disheartening to see this sort of thing. Whatever happened to the joy of the Lord being our strength (Nehemiah 8:10)?

Maybe they don't feel the victory. I played the piano in my church and tried to play it in way to it have the spirit in and finally would get a break through on it. It was like they understand about the song they were singing and it was like they didn't feel anything. Some people just doesn't have joy they need.

+J. Brian McKillop I would agree with you- partially. First off, I know the man leading the song, and I would guarantee he has the hymn memorized- or at least a good portion of it. I know personally that I love memorizing hymns and have most of the ones we sing in our church memorized; however, I still use a hymnbook and look at the notes as I sing. I find with familiar songs that we can sometimes get into ruts and start singing a song incorrectly, and looking at it anew and afresh can help. I think also that when leading songs in front of 500 people like we have at our church, it might be easier looking at the hymnal than out at all the faces in front of you, lol. :) Also, this songleader is not our regular- he was just filling in briefly at this time. :)
