Verdict! Cruel Necessity (Deluxe Edition): The English Civil Wars 1640-1653 (Overview & Review)

The verdict is in! This is an overview and review of the deluxe edition of the states of siege style, solitaire wargame Cruel Necessity: The English Civil Wars 1640-1653. Designed by John Welch and published by Worthington Publishing.
Cruel Necessity is a solitaire game simulating the military, political, and religious struggles of the English Civil Wars. You attempt to stop the advance of four armies bent on destroying Parliament and Puritanism, whom you represent. Simply holding on to London is not enough; you must also suppress the enemies of Puritanism, Parliamentary Government, and English domination.
There are civil wars going on not just in England, but in Scotland and Ireland too; and each will have varying impact on the play of the game at different times.
The title comes from the purported response to the beheading of King Charles by his implacable foe, Oliver Cromwell, who remarked that this act of regicide was a “Cruel necessity.”

I have both versions/editions of Cruel Necessity and enjoy the game. This is the best review I've seen for tackling the pros and cons of it.

Nice review video. Enjoyed the playthrough too. I picked this up during Noble Knight’s recent sale, but haven’t played it yet. I’ll need to get it to the table soon. If it’s too punishing, I might house rule that a draw in a tactical battle has no effect and that enemy sieges get one roll versus two per turn. We’ll see.

You mention the death spiral being a con for the game, And it made me wonder if there are any solitaire (war)games that have some sort of catchup mechanic of some sorts.

It seams to me that those bonus cards are rarely used. I think the balance of the game could have been improved if those cards are more useful.
