VANLIFE IN THE STORMS (The Wild Atlantic Way || Beara Peninsula)
This week we take a ride on Europe's only cable car that traverses open seas (despite the stormy weather) across to a beautiful and remote island off the Beara Peninsula on the Wild Atlantic Way. The weather takes a turn for the worse and we find ourselves in a red weather warning storm on Ireland's wild west coast.
We are Tom and Iz - a couple from Cornwall who trained to be science teachers and then decided to hit the road and embrace a new way of life, living and exploring in our tiny home on wheels, La Bamba. We invite you along with us on our adventures in our weekly vlogs. We love to embrace adventure and soak up nature every day! We're currently traveling around Ireland in our transit van along the Wild Atlantic Way. Ireland has really stolen our hearts; come along with us on this week's episode as we continue to explore the rugged and beautiful Beara Peninsula. First stop this week is the Dzogchen Beara, a Buddhist meditation centre on the Beara Peninsula, it was a very relaxing and peaceful place where we enjoyed some good vegan cake and coffee and a meditate in their garden with the most spectacular views across the ocean.
We then venture over Healy pass, to do one of our beloved national looped walks in Ireland, this one was called the Pulleen Loop near Adgroom, about 5km long, with some really interesting caves along the way. We then drive along the Castletownbere across the peninsula to a motorhome parking spot and treat ourselves to vegan pizza. After parking up in the wilds for a while, we enjoyed our night in the town!
The next day we are very excited to venture out to Dursey Island via Ireland's only cable car. It was a very windy day and we were so relieved that the cable car was still running so we could experience it! We were the only ones riding over to the island and wow did we enjoy the ride over! It was very exciting and a bit scary looking down at the ocean with just the wooden sliding doors separating us from the roaring Dursey Sound below. We loved the cable car's rickety nature. This island is just 6.5km long and 1.5km wide so we explored the island by foot and made friends with a lovely local man who lives on the island. He told us all about island life and we soaked up the beautiful views and tried to look out for whales! There are no shops or pubs or restaurants on Dursey and just a few permanent residents that live there. We got a bit too relaxed exploring and had a close shave making the final return journey of the cable car!
Later in the week we battle with the incoming storms and we try to hunker down somewhere safe whilst the storms pass. We take this opportunity to go to a campsite and head off to Glengarriff camping but find out its closed until spring but he kindly signposts us to his neighbour who also runs a campsite "O'Sheas Caravan & Camping Park". The toilets and showers were all closed here too due to storm damage but Donald the owner really kindly lets us shower in his house and gives us a lovely warm welcome. Yet again we are reminded of the amazing and generous Irish hospitality and it really is the people that have made this trip so special! We make it through the first stormy night at the campsite and there is a short break in the bad weather so we head out to Glengarriff Woods Nature Reserve for a stretch of the ol' legs.
We then deliberate on where to spend the next stormy night after finding out the weather warnings have turned from yellow to red so we head inland a bit to Castle Donovan. We have a rocky night in the van but we stay all safe and cosy!

So my dad took me on that exact cable car in July 2000. We spent the day fishing and caught a few sea trout towards the end of our day and because we knew we were going home we decided to keep them. We put them in a plastic superquinn bag back up to the cable car we went. A very dramatic and loud American women got onto the cable car with us and lost her absolute mind when 3 sheep were put on with us. She was totally over reacting and was giving her husband an awful time. We were half way across and she was barely holding in there and was sat beside me. At that moment one of the trout in the bag decided to have one last flip about and when I say she nearly jumped out of the cable car im not even exaggerating.

My uncle Michael Maher was Parish Priest in Allihies for 30 years. We visited for 2 weeks every summer as kids and we took the cable car to Dursey Island once - once was enough!!! ;-)
Hey guys, as a touring under 21 New zealand rugby team many years ago we travelled the UK and ireland our only regret was the weather, honestly it rained nearly everyday we were there both the UK and Ireland, but it was still beautiful, and we still won all our games except for one, bloody England beat us...lol take care guys and thanks for the memories, much love from New zealand

Oh noo you got rain the whole time.. i don't actually understand how we've been so lucky here in Ireland with the weather, even when its forecast for rain it doesnt set in for the whole day like it would back home in Cornwall. well done for all the games you won wahoo what an adventure that must have been!!
Definitely wise to get away from the sea cliffs. A lady was actually killed some years back when her caravan was blown off a cliff from the campsite. Thankfully spring is in the air . Better days ahead folks !

Beara is such a lovely place to live, I came to Castletownbere on holidays from Cork City and I never left. Love the pace of life , scenery is fab with the mountains and the sea.
You brought me right back to my childhood with the cable car my dad brought me on that when I was about 6 I rember being keeping my eyes shut until it stopped forgat all about that thank you for this keep good work up I really enjoy your videos

Glad to see that you both were safe. It was a little bit scary for a while during that storm. If you can fit in Castle Townsend, Union Hall and Drombeg stone circle I think you'd enjoy it. Don't forget to sample Murphys stout or Beamish down this part of the country you will taste the difference to Guinness. Stay safe and keep the videos coming.

We took our kids on holidays in West Cork for years to our place on Sheep’s Head. Do drive it if you get a chance, fabulous views of Hungry Hill on the north side. Great walk on the end of the peninsula with a lovely cafe in the carpark (run by our neighbour’s sister) Super little cove outside Kilcrohane (take the turning by the playground) and enjoy a pint in Eileens. Thank you for making these videos they’re refreshing many wonderful memories.

You should’ve seen the old cable car. Basically the pile of scrap timber and metal that accumulates behind your shed, randomly assembled and strung beneath the cable. The word “ramshackle” would be a generous description.

That cable car is so crazy, going through the tower, enjoyed it a lot. They even took sheep (ah, yes, you say so yourselves) and I think a cow once on there... One of the coolest occasions on a south-west-Irland trip.

hey Mark! ha it was kinda crazy wish I'd filmed more inside the car (was too excited to be riding it) but you could actually see through the floorboards!! and the sliding door just opened out to the sea - crazy! thank you thats so cool you like toms jumper - it was hand knitted and gifted from the lovely irish family we stayed with for new years - he has a matching hat too!

They are looking to replace the cable car with something more modern. Half of its charm is that it looks like its going to just fall into the sea at any moment. Those caves are Cuas Pier caves by the way, lovely spot and some cracking views just up on top of the hill next to them.

Wow, that last storm was crazy, it was pretty strong here in the midlands so you made the right decision leaving the coast. Your lovely video brought back so many good memories of family camping trips to that area. Thank you so, so much for sharing and enjoy your friends visit.

Wow, that cable car looked a little rickety and in high winds as well!!! I was worried you might get stuck on the island if the weather got worse, but I'm sure if that had happened since local would have taken you in. I forget that your videos might be a few weeks in the past, whenever I look at the weather I always think that the South West of Ireland takes the brunt of the Atlantic weather fronts that come in, probably why the scenery is so amazing down there, but never once wondered what it would be like to see out a storm whilst being in a van. Glad to see you survived and look forward to the next video.

Hello again Matt! haha it was quite rickety but actually didn't rock very much when it was traveling over! only when it was at each end was it rocking in the wind ha ! yes i did think we might get stuck if we missed the last cable car but i think that lovely man we met on the island would have taken us in, he already invited us for a cuppa. Yet again such kind people everywhere we go! Thank you for your support each week, really is so lovely to hear you enjoy the videos!

Best episode to date, lived every moment with yis, went on that cable car many times & swam that sound, ( channel of water ) with a friend many years ago, it was an annual event, not sure if it’s still on, and a beautiful walk on Dursey, west cork is special, when you get nearer to Clonakilty pay a visit to Sextons camping in Timoleague, they are fabulous hosts, either way, keep up your blogs it’s a wonderful release form the awful daily news these days, god bless you both.

I stayed in that campsite, he is a sweetheart the owner, so accommodating, i swam across the road in the lake, we eventually want to live down that way.Fairplay going on the cable car , so much wind. I know ye have beautiful weather now, enjoy every minute of it. It is to get down to minus five tonight though. Ye are having a rollercoaster adventure. Oh enjoy West Cork, my fave place to camp, and so many hidden gems.

Guys great video and a great part of Ireland I know well. Don’t miss Schull or the MIZEN peninsula and a nice van park up that is hidden away is Dereenatra pier….small and no water or electricity but beautiful
