Castletownbere

This is the main town on the Beara Peninsula. The town has one functioning church and a supermarket. It is one of Ireland's main fishing ports. Though the town has but 860 inhabitants it has a Spanish Consulate. It is surely the smallest town in the world to play host to a consulate.

the spanish have been fishing off the southern coast of Ireland for centuries .....and paid taxes to the O'Sullivan Bearas.... for all the fishing rights...there has consistantly been spanish trawlers and fishermen in and around Castletownbere landing fish etc... and so therefore there is a SPanish consulate ..for years and years even before the EEC.,,,,
