I cant believe how good Cruise in this. This is a broken man knocked off his high horse, knowing he'll never climb it again but desperately trying. Certainly the most overlooked film in his career

I realize now that after he said "She's the saddest girl to ever hold a martini" was when Sofia remembered that David got into the car with that girl right after they had their night together in her apartment. Thats why she said she wasn't ok, but didn't want to talk about it at that moment.

It's very simple as to why she didn't want to talk to him. He looks like a hideous monster, who is both drunk and desperate. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. She was crying at the sight of a man who lost everything, and is a shadow of his former charismatic self. I think she feels sorry for him, and is grossed out by his behavior in the club. I don't know about you, but I'd be very uncomfortable at the sight of someone who wanted roleplay in a drunken stupor.

Thats not how I interpret it. That martini line upsets Sofia because it reminds her of the last time he said that to her, on that perfect night where they first met. Hes trying to recreate that scene but she realized the magic of that first encounter is not there anymore, which is why she freezes in a sad, sombre gaze.

One of the best movies I’ve ever seen, I remembered watching this way decades ago and this is one of fave part of the movie.

This scene is gut-wrenching.

This was her realizing that they are both now speaking about someone who took their own life. Red dress, strappy shoes- she seems to be the saddest girl to ever hold a martini

She realized that he was not the person she met during the party, not anymore. She was disappointed and wanted to run away from him, she knew that was the last time they would see each other.

To be fair he was trying to be something he wasn't and trying very hard to compensate for how he looks by being a condescending jerk, she could see he was trying to be someone else because of how hurt he is about his looks instead of just being himself who she met the other day, she didnt care about how he looked as evident when she told him to take the mask off, she cared about the beauty inside of him but it was his whole attitude in this which was what freaked her out, she saw anger and disgust from his attitude and not his face which hurt not only her but she also felt betrayed that he cared more about beauty on the outside than the beauty inside.

@@The_Knight_Rider1980 Condescending jerk? No. It wouldn't have mattered what he said or how you think he acted. He was disfigured, and she didn't want to see him anymore because of it. Stop making excuses for his disfigured appearance. She ended up ditching him even before he went over to talk to her there. Looks matter to at least some degree. Even you yourself know that.

There's another thing - he literally got into the car with Julie right after spending intimate time with Sofia. Sofia would have known and that would have hurt any one, he just went back to his usual ways and paid the price for it.

One of the best movies. Ever.

How could anyone not? You'd need to have a heart of stone not to feel at least a little bad for a person in this state. It's a sad and pathetic sight. It's the emperor with no clothes on.

Always remember that if it was the girl who had even a fraction of this disfigurement, the guy would be gone in approx. 0.005 secs!

That was definitely the wrong moment for an attempt at humor...

She didn't reject him for his disfigurement she rejected him because she knew he's not the person she met anymore as you can see here he's trying to be something he's not trying to cover up his disfigurement by being a jerk
