What many people around the world do not know is that this coastline is exactly the same as this video for 1500 km north of this island all the way to Anchorage Alaska, with almost NO population the entire way. It is truly one of the last almost untouched wild places on earth, accessible by a few remote roads and summer ferries and cruise ships. Fortunately a huge oil shipping port wanted by Alberta province right in the middle of it at the town of Prince Rupert has been temporarily dis-allowed by Prime Minister Trudeau, but there is danger it may be revived if he loses power in the future (I am not much of a fan of Trudeau, but I supported him fully on this issue).

The Butchart Gardens are a must see! I'm not even a garden person but even I was in awe at the magnificence of the gardens. The language of course is English (and some Native People's languages they know) so what 18 Rabbit is referring to is the VanIsle lifestyle which is quaint and modest escapism for most people. The southeast part of the island around Victoria, Duncan and Nanaimo (nan-eye-mo) is populated with about a half million people along 100 km of shoreline, beyond that the people really thin out. Beware of some really, really, kooky people in and around Nanaimo, the only real blight on this otherwise wonderful place.

@@u83208 "they run away from each other." Not that I have notice but they do tend to ignore people who complain (incorrectly) about a place they should move away from. Correction. Van Isle has one of the lowest Covid rates in the world (last summer was 200 cases with 950,000 people). This has been mostly achieved by social distancing . I guess some people are more readily socially distanced from. P.S. Have you ever lived in Canada more than 200 miles from the US border? Heather MacDee I live in Ontario and thought they sounded weird too. Then thought maybe that’s just have British Columbians pronounced them. Thanks for confirming my hunch.

@@marcopolo9146 Well they were not offensive enough as the "mainlanders" continued to come over. To be honest many Islanders went to the mainland but in any case the majority of new vases of Covid on the Island have been traced to "off Island" sources. Contained quickly. But sick is sick. The majority still did the right thing and I am happy about that.

A good way to go, if you are OK with it, is to get to Victoria City (easy from Vancouver City Airport on the mainland by commuter flight or slightly harder by transit train, bus and ferry) and rent a camper van in Victoria (so you don't have to pay a high ferry fee for it) and stay in the many well maintained and supervised campgrounds all over the island, about 20$ Canadian per night Travel in June-September, it rains a lot the rest of the year.
