Thanks for making this video. I have been flip-flopping back and forth between getting a bus or regular van for a while now. I really wanted to be able to stand up in whatever I got. At the same time, I guess you could say I don't see any kind of a future at my job. Actually, the less of a future the better. A clearness happened when I watched this video. I need a bread truck man!! I have spent the majority of my life on tour. Staying in one place just doesn't work for me. I was on the technical crew, not the "talent", so a lot of small motel rooms and crashing on the buses. I am highly confident in my ability to live small. Hell yeah man, this has stirred the fire under my ass. Thanks

I have seen the cab of my van get as high as 126 degrees! I found some scrap pieces of 2" thick polyiso boards that I lined every space along the walls and ceiling of the cab that I could and it made quite a difference.

yo you can use some of them storage bins to put your big blue tarp that u will need in the near future!

Thanks for watching this one! The Hawaii van conversion will be much smaller so we probably won't be able to get as creative with the space, but this is a great one to build ideas off of!

Right on, step van is my first choice for conversion to nomad life. But you would have been better with first installing reflectix and then insulation on top of that. Hot climates reflectix makes a huge difference when installed properly. Good vid and glad you found some love.

As a side note Reflectix is not an insulator. It reflects heat and that's it. If you're planning to be in colder climates please think of proper insulation for your rig. But as before it's not a bad idea to "start" your insulation with reflectix as it's thin and since most nomads wander to and from warm climates it's a good first step. I hope this clarification helps some folk. Proper installation is key though. So do it right, do it once.

Hello 👋 !!! I just started getting serious with my channel a little over a month ago , after I bought my Step Van !!! That is a cool build you had going there !!! 👍👍👍

I put a bed and van seat with counter etc in my Grumman Kurbmaster, I registered it as an RV not commercial registration which had the DOT pull me over several times when they thought it had to be commercially registered, it wasn't easy but persistence succeeded, it has to have a bed and seats and DMV did it. I had a generator on a hitch mounted platform that powered a 1 ton AC unit that worked great! A fireplace will kill you quickly in that thing unless the door is open!

Never drill holes in a roof unless you use marine products to seal. To hold up the ceiling all you needed were self-tapping screws and upholstery caps to cover them or predrill the wood with recesses and then use wood plugs and sand the holes as a real woodworker.

Hey Chad that's a very nice man cave bro!! But I can see why you gave that up. She is incredibly beautiful. Totally worth giving up the solo single life for her. You both look perfect couple. Only couple things I like more on your man cave than the school bus. 1. It has a shower area. That made your home complete that you don't need to use other facilities to wash up. 2. It is way more stealthy than the school bus. Your other videos mentioned you have been visited by police many times.... well, school bus is not one for stealthy boondocking. However, you are one lucky Chad, she is gorgeous!

Kool, I was wondering if y'all had a video of the van conversion. Thanks for showing it, and I'm sure it'll be a great guide to someone. Y'all are just awesome! Oh, and yesterday after church they had dinner in the fellowship hall. It was a chili dinner with all kinds of homemade chili. I asked our Sunday School teacher if he knew which one didn't have pork (as i think y'all know I don't eat pork any more). He said he'd find out, but informed me that his wife made vegan chili (yes, she's one of your people, lol), so I told him I'd try it. Now being from Texas, I can't really call it chili if it doesn't have some kind of neat. So I call it chili flakes stew, lol. But, I have to say it was delicious. And as I was eating it, I was thinking about y'all lol. Anywho, thanks for the video, take care and YHVH bless y'all.

I'll say you've got some great ideas there --- but--- you probably should've laid out your floor plan first and tweekd it as you went along and maybe you would'nt have had to go back to fix things so much but in all looks good and it's all lessons learned but good video and it has inspired me to try n go step van next instead of just a cargo van Thanks

Yes everything I see in your conversion looks as though it was slapped together as if you had never used a saw and screws before. What a maroon.

I used Liquid Nail for some project about 7 years ago, and the damn adhesive dried, cracked and lost its grip. I never used it again.

I have the same fibreglass roof on my Stepvan, I took utmost care to drill as little as possible into the it.n I added a support structures for my two deck hatches and the solar entry plate. I added a roof rack for my solar panels and bolted it to the cross members with sealing spacers blocks. I added a catwalk in between the roof rack for access, all so I don't put any stress on the fibreglass since it is not structural. Seeing you drill all those holes to hang the ceiling from the fibreglass roof made me cringe.

Lol, that was a lesson learned, I went back up on the roof 2 more times to seal around all the bolts. When it was finished, it made it through snow storms with no leaks. :) I agree tho, cringe worthy. Lucky the bus has been much better, probably because I had the van under my belt. Damn, you drilled thru your roof!. You should have used 3/16 plywood pop rivets. You can get them from Grainger. Then you fasten the wood panel to the roof bows with the pop rivets. I hate to say it but you just ruined your roof drilling all them holes.

I worked helping a friend who had a RV business, drilling the holes in roof was a mistake.....it will leak and you will never know it until a lot of damage has happened...seen it many times even on RV's less than a year old....

Haha yeah after a liberal application of weather proofing sealant on the solar panel/ceiling, all leaks were final stopped! I've since sold this vehicle, and sincerely hope the new owner hasn't had any issues with that since... definitely not something I would do again. Thank for the comment, friend!

It's a retired USPS Step Van! :) Super great space, and incredible security. Bought it for $6,000 with 200K on it! Best of luck to you on your search!

Well whoever got it, had everything done for them aside from windows which not everyone wants anyway. I hope that they are out exploring the wilderness and doing good deeds for the elderly or something. 😃 Did Chad have a separate KZread channel before? I'm not a saint when it comes to food, but good food can heal your mind and your body too. Glad you're feeling better!

What kind of weather do you have in your location? I am thinking of converting a van/bus when I retire, but I live in Canada, so I would need to insulate whatever I decide on, fairly well!

That looks like a 2003 P42. Those are cool been looking for an old USPS van like that. Still running? How reliable has that been for you? How many miles does it have now?

What did/ does insurance cost?

I feel like you would have made a better choice buying a box truck. My purpose for a step van is for direct access to the cab. Seeing your bed blocking the door drove me nuts lol. Not to mention the cable management. I couldn’t live in that thing.

Was this a 10' box?

We use it just in the summer months and only when we're in dry states like Colorado. It only uses 200W rather than thousands for an AC. If you're going to be hooked on to shore power you won't have any issues with AC though!

@@LivingZEAL Hi there. I'm considering different vehicles to potentially build out. A guy who lives in a step van said in one video that aluminum is resistant to WiFi signals. Did you have any trouble using your devices/connecting and maintaining a connection to WiFi? Connectivity will be important to me living in a van.

awww you guys are the best, thanks for doing this one!! very cool! do you remember the dimensions of the interior? we've asked a few people about the window thing you guys mentioned and from what we were told if you can't fit windows in between the beams then structural beams can be cut and fabricated into a window frame to allow more support for around your windows. we have someone that can help us with that because it sounds a little complicated but we're not too concerned with that aspect. what we you saying about the steel plate walls you couldn't anchor 2x4s to though that seems like it could potentially be a big problem!

Definitely! We started looking back through all of the van footage to after you mentioned you guys were interested in this... hopefully this is helpful! As for the 2x4 anchoring issue... Chad says he totally could have done that but it would have taken a lot more work haha. By that we mean, you would have to drill holes through the steel beams, buy special bolts to secure the wood to the steel frames, and repeat this multiple times on each wall. In the end, the steel beam near the cabin door was just a more simple way to go about it while still maintaining the structural integrity. Completely doable for you guys though to do it the proper way. And, the interior space was 7X11 :)

Yes! We have a little shower in the bus, it's nothing too special but it works great for us! We can both get clean with about 5gallons (including washing hair lol)

One of the biggest problems with RVs is roof leaks ...you just made it worse !!!

They make metal track that you put between each piece of foam insulation that you screw the backs off and can then screw your ceiling to. Helps avoid putting huge holes in your roof and gives you a nice layout to screw to. It's mostly used in commercial insulating..goo.gl/images/MpwTtb

Looks like you did a great job. That's a lot of work. I have to say the Hawaii announcement threw me for a loop but I wish you two well. I'm just not sure you realize what that drastic an increase in the cost of living will mean for you. Do you have friends or family in Hawaii? I'm not trying to put a damper on your news. Hawaii won't be happening right away, we still have several adventures to go on before we head out there... but it's an idea we've been toying with for awhile and finally decided to just go for it. It's always seemed like a pipe dream.. but as the old cliche goes we only live once, so why not go big?! Also, Chad lived in Maui for a year so he is familiar with the cost of living... we've lived in Boulder, CO (one of the most expensive cities in CO) & in D.C. so we're super familiar with high costs of living. We do have some friends there too :)

If only it'd go fast enough on the freeway!

Fixing the flat got me up to 11 hwy. Poor thing is so underpowered. 45 max over the mountain pass. Does 75 on flat, any hills at all and youre at 60. Mine has no governor, so I have had it to 80+ downhill.

You are so incredibly rude. We have stated we don’t have any construction experience. We have stated this was our first ever build. We didn’t have the finances to employ a whole crew of knowledgeable people to make this build perfect. You do the best you can & you learn as you go. That’s the point of this build.

This was my first time attempting anything like this... so it definitely ended up being far from perfect. My fiance definitely had some inspired ideas for the bus build that made it work better, but by the time we started on that build, I also had the experience from the van build to grow upon.

Sorry but bolting through the fiberglass was absolutely ridiculous. You have the steel ribs to tie into and if you needed the mounting points closer together then you should have screwed strapping from front to back across the ribs as needed. Bad mistake.

I really wanted to watch this whole video but you filmed so close and moved so fast it was making me dizzy and it was hard to actually see what you were talking about. I think it would be better with a tripod for the camera and that way it would actually show the whole picture. Just a suggestion.

I like the shower design

I think its better to apply 'insulation' OUTSIDE steel/metal frames instead of INSIDE. As an example, glue/kit styrofoam board (nanowood would be even better insulation I think) to the OUTSIDE of the frame, and screw/glue/kit THIN wood (wood also get strong insulating capacity) to the inside of the frame, this way one would most probably get some more space for wiring behind the wood AND SUPER insulation, I'm practically sure MUCH BETTER insulation than in case of insulating inside of the frame. Of course, when applying insulation to the OUTSIDE, don't forget to cover with e.g. FLEXIBLE epoxy like stuff, lightweight and rubberlike so water/hail/wind won't likely damage insulation; www.isothane.com/prod/blocked-prepolymer-range (i'm not paid to advertise this product, just sharing example).

You ruined the roof and you going to need another axle to carry the weight of all the unnecessary shit..so much wasted space.....

I’d like to give you a thumbs up but watching this video was painful. Really painful. The close up shots made it difficult, no impossible, to understand anything about what you were describing in relationship to what’s around it or next to it for that matter. And the shaking, the entire video is like looking through a shaking microscope. Every shot is close up and moving. Yeah, painful.

0:55 - All your tools are obsolete and the worst quality and many you will not use. This is Ryobi - which is cheap crap. And 18V not 20V. Not every manufacturer makes every good tool. Some should be Dewalt 20 such as the 887 Driver and 885 Drill with Milwaukee Titanium drill bits for metal and wood. For an angle Grinder, the Bosch 5" refurbished is $79 on Amazon, comes with a paddle switch, Keep On switch, variable speed, and a removable handle for left handers. One of the best I found. Table saw is Dewalt corded. Random Orbit small round sander is Dewalt. This has velcro tabs for sand paper. Better than Makita or any Palm Sander. These tools are the most useful in any build. Another good one is the Dremel MultiMax 45 with quick release - its the only flush cut blade available anywhere. If you need a tiny angle grinder, the Dremel Saw Max will fit the bill, for detail work. Dewalt Corded (I think) Plunge Router is also very good. So take this lot of cheap junk back and buy my list above. You will not be disappointed. Never buy a whole set of tools at the outset from the same company! Buy as you need them, and do your homework. Buying tools involves massive research. Big investment of time and money, and they either bring you joy or curses. 2:13 - That clear sealant is silicone. The worst product you could use on your roof or anywhere on an RV. What you want is called DAP Lap Sealant and is a rubber compound not silicone. All these trade skill projects like roofing, sealing, tiling, etc are all very precise and technical. Wrong sealant or caulk on any project means a complete removal and redo. You cannot use this sealant on your roof, it will come right off with the UV rays and weathering. Silicone is excellent for glass repairs and gluing aquarium panels together, but NEVER the roof or exteriors like window outside trim. You use butyl tape and DAP Lap Sealant only. And as for the bolts you drove through the roof - so many issues here I cannot even begin to start. Rust due to not painting the metal holes first. Water leakage. No hold through foam. Bumpy roof with wind drag and tripping hazard. Oh boy! 3:11 - You put aromatic red cedar above your bedroom? Excessive exposure to the oils can be a lung and eye irritant and give you asthma. Any animals exposed to this will be miserable and sick, as their sense of smell is so much stronger, poor little cat! This was a very amateur mistake. There is a reason why you only use it in closets. Moths don't like it, as it causes them damage. 10:02 - where is the waterproof membrane under your bath tile? Did you use polymer in the mortar and grout to prevent cracking? Hold that camera steady. Get a gimball and tripod. Makes viewer seasick. Decide what you want to show, then show it. All we get is a series of images flashing haphazardly on screen. Get a proper microphone, your audio track is as shaky as the camera. Goes from too loud to too soft repeatedly. 15:20 - the Memory foam mattress - most expensive and the worst for your back. A hard mattress is what keeps your spine aligned. You have a lot to learn dude. Learn before you teach. Do a proper van build and film it better.

You have a swamp cooler running next to you and you are surprised by a temp difference? Get a clue.

She will complain about that plenty in days to come, especially once she saddles you down with a kid. But, at least you met the love of your life ... Also, what do you mean a “generational thing” I’m in my mid 30s and have worked for a carpenter for years. The van was never finished, so maybe that’s what you mean? Either way I really want to hear back from you because you must be an incredible smart old man to back up accusations like that. Would LOVE to see all YOUR builds, where can I do that?

that would be a Samsung galaxy s5 lol. Yea I tried to give people a disclaimer in the beginning. This was really old footage I put together. Every other video for living zeal we use a Canon 5d ii or our 70d. Please check those out before you judge lol. Thanks for the comment! :)
