Tall Microsoft retirees build semi-truck "penthouse on wheels"

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Retirees Scott and Susan Burbank were looking for a full-time mobile home to tour the country at the same time Microsoft retired an old semi-truck that once housed a mobile computer lab.
It was an empty shell with “lots of cables hanging everywhere,” but the couple got to work and 14 months later they had built their dream home inside the old Freightliner. Scott is 6’8” tall, so he needed the high ceilings and space for an extra large bed. They build a murphy bed that folds in two places in order to fit into the pop-out wall.
Scott also wanted a full shower, but didn’t want something that would sit permanently in the space, so he invented a “murphy shower” that expands from 9 inches in the wall to 5 feet into the living room. Using their experience building a sailboat, they epoxied the very-strong-yet-light Okoume plywood to create a waterproof basin that folds out from the wall to catch the water. Using ceiling tracks, they hung waterproof curtains that encircle the fully-extended structure to create a shower with few sacrifices.
The Burbanks first conversion project was an old sailboat that they turned into an ultra-efficient camping cruiser “that goes farther on a gallon of gas (15 miles) thank just about any other powerboat around”. Using this model of finding an effective “hull” to convert, they then turned their energy (10-hour days, 6 days per week) to converting the semi-truck into an open architecture plan (no interior walls) that would be comfortable for very tall people to live full-time.
Powered entirely by solar, the truck is 100% electric (they don’t use any propane), so for cooking, they use an induction cooktop and a specialty hyper-compact convection oven/stove. They can live off-grid for weeks at a time, the limiting factor being water. Their tanks hold enough for about 3 weeks of drinking/shower water. They use a compost toilet to cut back on water and power.

I worked on a truck with a rear hydraulic lift platform and one of the guys I worked with had no toes. Evidently his foot was caught in the lift as it closed and scissored off the top of his foot. May I advise putting warning tape on the area where the lift meets the floor and a sticker that shows a foot being severed. This was a great video with some terrific ideas for DIY van builders. I especially liked the idea of having red lights around the bed at night so you can see without adjusting your eyes. Great work, really enjoyed watching this.

Learning to maximize space is a must. These guys did such a good job of it. Downsizing from a house to an RV. Really impressive. Early morning think time. I do something similar. What an amazing couple w/ an amazing home on the go! I absolutely LOVE this! Scott reminds me of a professor wanting you to learn as much as possible. If he doesn't offer the information but you ask, he lights up at your spacial awareness and instantly gives a speed lecture. Best kind of teacher in my opinion, makes for a stimulating conversationalist. A brilliant man who doesn't make you feel stupid for not knowing or understanding. His wife just beams while he's speaking, the whole time just lit up. They're a rarity I'm happy I got to witness. Now I didn't build my own awesome RV but I did just recently get a 2022 33ft travel trailer for my disabled Mom and I (she's blind and has epileptic seizures) and we picked ours for the open floor plan; everyone has been pleasantly surprised how much room there is once inside b/c it doesn't look it from the outside. I'm grateful our trailer came w/ awesome features but eventually there are minimal changes I'd like to make; lipstick and rouge to make it 100% our own. Beyond that I also noticed a lot of RVs, trailers, 5th wheels, toy haulers, etc. come w/ those swooping paint designs. About a month ago I was talking to a guy staying in the lot next to me about it, asking why this was. He had no idea but he commented on my paint design. I told him I wanted to eventually change it but until then it was conscience effort to not have any of the "typical" swoops; I'm silver, matte black & blue with different thicknesses of pinstripes.

I absolutely love to see others brain storm ideas, like me! I have gone into those big box stores and explained what I am looking for to complete a project and they look at me cross eyed. I once bought these metal things that were supposed to hand on the wall and hold decorative plants, but no... me I looked at them upside down and thought these would make cute lights, explained and drew out what I wanted and my electrician son got it perfect (one of the few things I won't do electricity). EDIT: Now you need to do one of their boat.

What a great setup! The ability to have a motorcycle inside means you don’t have to slow down to pull a trailer. The shower is awesome and the doors on the back are really nice. The only thing I wouldn’t like would be the height of the truck, since it would limit which campgrounds you could use. Excellent tour!

I recall another episode where the guy had built multiple levels in basically what was a storage area of his apt building. He also designed ships. People with this background always have very clever design ideas for living spaces. And I loved the bathroom the ship designer created in his small living space.
