Don’t forget, memory foam turns hard as a stone if it gets cold. Always go for latex or wool.

A hydraulic drop from the ceiling style bed is my favorite way of ensuring a bed is always ready and gives you seating underneath during the day which then gives space for a bathroom and kitchen.

Bottom line: you most likely don't need a foldable bed. Fixed bed + storage underneath IMO is the most practical approach in most cases.

Interesting. I have a concept in my mind a bit like a roller garage door, a slatted bed base board and attached compressible mattress that rolls up, into a roll near the roof at the back doors (slats joined with strong webbing bands). When deployed side guide rails on the van walls each side guide it as it unrolls down to sort of the normal rear bed position, like they do on the garage doors. As an engineer the holy trinity of vans bed-toilet-shower in smallest space are a fascinating challenge, everything else can work round those.

Most full time vanlifers will tell you they never use their shower and end up converting the space to something else (it's all very well to have a shower but to have to access and carry around the water needed to run it....)

@@nsmith3128 pretty much. Washing (body wipes, pressurised pump spray bottles, bathing natural water sources - anything to save on water usage; you can keep clean without actually having a shower). Many will have a shower every other day at a gym (some will even check in to a caravan park once a week to shower and do laundry); but if you're off grid that's not an option - and if you're off grid where do you fill up your water? And carrying a whole heap takes up a heap of space plus it's very heavy - so that's extra in mileage). Don't forget all the other things you need to use water for other than drinking and showering - there's laundry and cleaning.... When you take all that into account you begin to see why including a shower in your rig becomes impractical

I have a horizontally mounted queen Murphy bed that's amazing. I'm 6'4" and have room. Flip the bed up and I have a ton of open space.

The first setup is absolutely genius! I'm designing my own overland trailer and you just solved my issue with want a fixed bed (at least a queen) and and table area to eat and work from. But I have to admit the Murph setup is bomb diggity!!! Awesome!

The vertical boards on the wall next to your bed visually extend the height of the van making it look like the roof is taller. I might pinch that idea!!

I like it when a bed design includes provision for bedding and pillows which some if these are great at, but some are not. Having to store and set up bedding every time is a pain. I think it's what makes the humble rock and roll so good, there's a natural spot behind the backrest to roll up and store this stuff.

Great ideas. I definitely like the always ready beds.

The best is the Number 2! ELECTRIC is amazing

I personally think a hydraulic lift bed is the way to go in that it gives you space underneath to create a lounge area etc or a great place to store bikes or other sporting gear. Flexibility, l believe is really important in a van.😊

High fail rate and what do you do if that happens when you're out in the middle of nowhere? (They're expensive and an expensive fix). The manual 1 is a much better option cos more realistic

Murphy (which i have) or bed lowered from ceiling! I don't want to be looking at my bed all day no nor do i want to have to make it up every night.

15:30 imagine a stranger trespass into your vehicle while you are in bed, you have the option to quickly create a barrier with that slide out and it contains all the guns on your side lol

the best bed is a fixed bed with a garage under its the best use of space, many of the other beds lost precious storage spaces

Don't forget to address the mold issue

#7 i like the pullout bed, I'm sure I'd have trouble getting up off the floor unfortunately

Things I want, if I lived in a van: #1. 1000 watt microwave. #2 Good sized freezer, for 400 frozen sandwiches, frozen vegies and frozen meat and fish. #3 Tools, gear and a 40+ gallon water tank under the bed. #4 Ceramic wall heater. #4 200 cans of soup. #5 2500w Power Station hooked up to solar on the roof, or a SphereMotor. #6 A sponge. #7 Coffee maker and a rice cooker. #8 A good wall cabinet setup. #9 Pullout toilet under the seat. For dinner put some frozen vegies in microwave and then add a can of soup. Next microwave a frozen sandwich. Next wet hair, add shampoo and then rinse in the sink with warm water from the microwave. Next clean body with warm sponge. Next turn on the Ceramic Wall Heater. Next, be free and happy.

Laye to the party and only in the saving/planning stage but for once im glad im only 4'10.5" and really only need 2" of sholder room! This should give me a lot more room than a man @ 6' or more! Lol

I wouldn’t want to bother with a convertible bed; but if I did, #3 IKEA seems like the easiest and quickest.

I saw a mini van with a bed width wise behind the two front seats! I got excited because I can fit in it, 5’ . Haven’t been able to find it since! Do you know of it? 😂

Murphy bed wins. I would have added a tv so she can watch from bed but otherwise perfect. BUT…. I would have given the electronic, drop down bed number one but she didn’t show how it looked when fully up against the ceiling. Can’t tell if there’s enough head room during the day. If there is- that’s the winner with the Murphy Bed #1A.

I am still alive.. I have been crazy busy on a more academic project (a book on ideas and ideology). I hope to get back a bit more to 'being in videos' in the coming year. (I will need to promote it after all).

Number 7 is absolute genius. I really wish I thought of sleeping on the floor before building a bed 🙄

Never again. Did it for over 35 years and ruined my back. Besides, the floor is for feet, animals and the dirt that comes with those.

@@rosscoooo4854 it depends on your definition of a bed, it's where we sleep. Also, last week was the first time we slept in a 'proper' bed and mattress and OMG never again, both of us were so uncomfortable, the mattress aged us 30 years. We were all aching.

@@EdurtreG everyone sleeps differently and it's important to respect people's choices and priorities. Floor beds are proven to help align the spine and skeleton and we have found that to be true in our case. I don't know how the floor bed will feel as we age, but will react to life as it happens and adjust. For the record, we clean our floor, and we are all animals just like you. 😉

I wish you'd shown that last bed being pulled out. I've seen builds like that before but not really in action (ie lived in)

Great video, although I am still looking for an idea how to store 4 bikes and sleep 4 people (2 adults, 2 kids), any suggestions?

I need a garage; For my wheelchair AND electric handbike. - Besides the watersystem/electrical system.. That means the entire bed in full length. No extension. Otherwise my handbike doesn't fit. - But I can't get a 170"/L3 van. Bc of the rules in our country. So I have to buy a 144". Butt I also need a shower (hidden or not, doesn't matter. It has to be inside). Bc of my ostomy. - It's so freakin hard to find the perfect layout that covers everything.. I think I have it. But than I can't storage anything anymore. I'm still watching this video; hope to find something creative (if that exists xD)

Could you please list the type of van and the wheel base for each.

Nate, I’ve registered for your course. But I’m too old and too unskilled to build my own van. I do want my own design (No gas, half-height shower and wc and a rear lounge with ceiling bed so high lithium and battery spec. Can you recommend a builder for such a van , please? Stuart

I’m making a transverse bed lift where the frame rides on rails and expands or collapses across the width of the van while hugging one wall as it is lowered or raised. A repurposed bench cushion fills in the foot of the bed on the opposite wall after the bed has been lowered. I’ve spent a fair amount of time on the structural engineering details and it’s not at all straightforward. This bed is for a Sprinter 144 to make better use of living space. I’ve only seen one other transverse lifting bed and that one had deep fixed cushions to fill in the gaps on both sides which significantly cuts into the living space below. Not ideal. I think there are some pretty good reasons why we don’t see bed lifts like the one I have in mind but that also makes it an interesting design challenge so we’ll see how it goes.

I sure hope you can get a van tour video up of your bed system.

R&R is best. You can buy a R&R bed system for £200 and about the same for cushions, make it as wide and long as you want. Held in with 6 bolts, you get a proper sofa and you can even get them with seat belts. Going from sofa to bed 1 second, from bed to sofa 5 seconds and you can store bedding behind the sofa.

If the bed takes too much time and effort to put it into place while TALKING about a van bed, then it's too complicated.

Top 10 campervan bed designs, but none from Humble Road, Sam's Van pretty standard fixed double, but it's electric so reclines, Mr & Mrs Sprinter van part electric part sliding longways mounted queensize electric reclining head end slides back to make it more compact in day use, Van 01 fold out futon couch in day bed at night easy to do

i prefer the electric bed lift but... this one doesn't have windows .... i prefer the electric bed lift with side windows, for viewing when I want to sit and relax and gaze outside without going outside.

My bed solution is not here...full width/140 with an extension of 60 cm. 2 mattresses with a length of 2 meters, where I cut the mattresses at 140. The foam rubber, not the cover. This means that the 60 cm part will be back to the rear doors. From "daybed" to bed: pull out the bed, then pull out the mattresses...done.

I thought that 1 was the best design. It was the bed on the floor that I thought crazy - I was fine about it just being a thin mattress but then she's adding blanket after blanket? Rather defeats the purpose of those thin floor mattresses

@@susie9893 there is a simpler version to no 1 where they slide out the bed extension, and also another slide out dining table between those 2 bench, but definitely more complex carpentry work

Bed #7 is only for the young. And by that I mean younger than 30-35.

That can be very uncomfortable for taller people - personally I hate not being able to stretch out.

All of them seem exhausting. I don’t create a bed while living in a house/apartment, so why would I want to do it living in a van?

Pros and cons of all of them. I too am not a fan of too much daily work - but it depends on your priorities.

I hope the person sleeping under the cabinets doesn't knock herself out, waking up during a nightmare in the middle of the night.

none of these beds are really what I want, 1) I ALWAYS want a bed for one person to sleep on sideways. But, I only want it taking up 36" (single size bed just for one) that is ALWAYS available to sleep on in case you get tired of driving and you just want to pull over for a quick snooze... or you just don't want to make the king size bed. And of course, the garage will be only 36" long so, when the bed is in "single" mode, you got a ton of space for recliners, couch, or whatever you want in that space, then, when it comes time doing some really good sleeping, you can slide out another 40 inches or so, depending on how tall you are. So, the bed will slide on rails over counter space, or couch ... depending on what you want in that space. Of course, if your prefer a bigger garage, then you can make it like the bed plug. However I think having more space for "van life" is a better deal. If somehow I could get a laz-boy recliner in the van. I'd be pleased! Don't make the mistake of having a hard cushion at the end of the bed, since doing this limits your sleeping position, and we all know a VAN is NEVER level. So, make the bed sleepable form east to west or north to south.

🎉 I'm not a fan of a bed at rear of van, always a danger if someone smashes into back whilst in bed.

"I don't like making my bed everyday". But she makes her murphy bed everyday

None of those beds were really practical... There are way many more options... And looks like you only did the European options... What about the bed, that when you sit on the edge... Pull a couple of pins, slide back and lock.... becomes the couch?

Clearly just a shadow. The rest of the van is pretty spotless so that's definitely just the colouring of the pillow + shadow

For the love of God, PLEASE normalise your audio!

NOT impressed - None of these designs impressed me as something I would want to mess with when going to bed at night and getting out of bed in the morning. Most of these are downright complicated and prone to wear, breakage, bulkiness and complexity; not to mention too short, too expensive, and complicated to build (for most people), and head bangers. Your van will flex and rock and bounce. Will the design you use hold up to that kind of punishment? Simple and quick and strong and cheap is the design I'm looking for. All of you people with lots of money who pay builders to make and build these complicated and expensive designs, will ultimately PAY AGAIN - when these builds fail or break or wear out, and YOU don't know how to repair or fix them yourself. because you did not build them. Keep it simple and cheap; don't do or install stuff that will cause you headaches down the road.

Bed on floor???.....not happening!
