In reality he’s not as good as Hendrix or Wes Montgomery as a guitarist but he did change guitar forever and to me that is a task that only happens very few times. Just as violin changed with Paganini and piano with Lzist guitar was changed by Eddie Van Halen.

"This man is a god!" LOL Yes, Jamel, he sure is. Growing up hearing his genius was incredible. No one else sounded like he did, especially in the 80's. Eddie is on another level!

Eruption, the guitar solo that changed rock music forever.

It's difficult to find anything on the internet where Eddie isn't laughing and smiling. He was truly a King with an exceptional character. I've been listening to VH since 1979 and it was never dull. Eddie also made his own guitars as well. It's been said before Eric Clapton made his guitar gently weep, but Eddie made his scream bloody murder! R.I.P. EVH you are sorely missed.

You picked up on what makes Eddie's solos so attractive: unlike other "rock god" types who seem to take themselves so seriously, Eddie always seems to have so much fun...he looks to the audience and seems to say, "Hey, check this out," rips a lick, and then laughs like a little kid at what he's done. So awesome.

I have been a VH fan since the first album in 78' and you are so right. He really loves what he does and it sure seems like he likes to watch all our faces while he drops these insane licks on his guitar. I dont think we will see another guitarist like Eddie for a long time. He built his own guitar to make the sounds that he wanted. Oh and I am a Van Halen and Van Hagar FAN!! Not a fan of Cherone Album nor was I impressed when Dave came back. His voice is shot and Eddie tuned back down a 1/2 step for him as he did in the early days.

Sorry about that-it was Mark Knopfler that insisted on playing guitar for Weird Al for his 'Money For Nothing' parody 'Beverly Hillbillies'. That did take some mad skills to produce a solo on 'Eat It' that intentionally sounded like the guitar was starting to smoke and blow up like it did on the video. (I still LMAO every time I watch it.)

They announced he died today and I am just devastated. He was was one of the greatest guitarists of all time, he was the greatest guitarist of my generation.

We lost Eddie Van Halen this morning. Reinvented rock guitar. We won't see another musician like him again.

Just got the news that Eddie just died. One of my heroes... had to jump on to hear him and grieve. Searched and found you enjoying EVH for the first time. Made my day and made me smile ear to ear - simultaneously sad, joyous, and so cathartic. Thank you Jamal. RIP, Eddie.

Love what you said about his smile. All other metal guitarist from his era tried to make sexy or mean faces.....they all knew who the king was. No front needed. Miss you Eddie.

@@cmwillisful Before Van Halen made it big they opened for Black Sabbath, their idols. Ozzy was amazed at their talent, but also said there was no way they could continue to open for Sabbath, because he felt they were blowing them off the stage. He loved their stuff, but did not want to follow them. He too helped propel them to where they belonged and that was headlining. Sabbath was the true founders of metal. Van Halen was really one of the founders of Hard Rock. "Dance The Night Away" is hardly metal.

As a teen from the eighties, Van Halen was not called SoCal party rock. I did hear it called bubble gum rock though. Eddy was the show, he was the one the girls fawned over and all the guys tried to look like.

I love watching someones face the first time they hear Eddie play.I grew up with this band and they are, always have been and always will be my favorite band ever. Eddie Van Halen will never ..ever... be outdone as the greatest guitar player in the world. He is to the guitar as Elvis is to rock in general.Thank you for this my brother.

All that great sound from his guitar. Eddie said in an interview that he would spend hours trying new things to get the most sound out of his guitar. The interviewer asked if he used the pedals and Eddie said no because he couldn't afford them at the time. Interviewer asked how about now and Eddie replied that he doesn't need them now...lol

Eddie was classically trained on the piano, winning competitions as a kid... so he knew the greats. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms. It all oozed out of his fingers and soul when he picked up a guitar. Meanwhile, Sammy is on his 3rd cold one.

I lived in Los Angeles in '86-'87 and one night coming home from work on my motorcycle, a Lamborghini Countach pulled up next to me - it was EDDIE!! He flashed a big smile and saw my reaction (he knew I knew it was him) and he took off down that street so fast when the light turned green! I wish I could have chatted with him for a couple of minutes. Huge fan. :-)

R.I.P to a giant! There is every single guitar player in the history of music, then there's eddy van halen, he really was way way out there in his own league, a grand master of guitar, basically eddy invented modern day guitar hero style. All the top guitar players on the planet tried to emulate him, and that alone is the greatest level of respect from the biggest names in music. Love and respect to eddy and his family, you are irreplaceable and the world will miss you. ❤❤👏👏👏👏

I still throw my hands up amazed. He didn't even know at the time that he was recording probably the best solo ever. In two hundred years people will still be listening just like we still listen to Bethoven. Absolutely amazing. If there was a guitar god, it happened right there and then in Eruption.

EVH RIP. Yes, besides the guitar making you smile, his smile and joy playing it makes you smile.

This man was able to get sounds out of that guitar that the designers didn't even know it could do.

Tacobell5150, correct. He picked out the parts of the guitar himself and put it together himself if memory serves me right. He also, I believe, pioneered "potting" of pick-ups.

that's because "designers" didn't construct his guitar (5150, which is now in the Smithsonian)...HE built it! BTW...5150 is the police code for "criminally insane"...yep, that explains it!

I admit Eddie is technically the best ever but David Gilmour makes a guitar sing which makes him my favorite. But Eddie's technique is better then Gilmour's. Eddie works a guitar but Gilmour makes it sing.

Think about the fact that 1, this man started a band with his brother and gave it their last name. 2, neither of them is the lead singer 3, the lead singer said he it’s favorite part of the show because he gets to chill. How many frontmen you know that like to chill to the tune of their guitarist outshining them for 16 whole ass minutes?! This man will always be a legend! In fact it was David Lee Roth's idea to name the band Van Halen. He thought it was a great name for a band. He was so right!

This whole album needs a review. One of the best debut albums in rock. "Ain't talkin' bout love" "Running with Devil" Every tune to be honest...lol. And who are the 257 people that gave a thumbs down??? Some Purist that have to have it all clean? I'd love to see anyone of you even hold a candle to Eddie or this AMAZING piece of music genius. He invented those pull offs and hammer ons. "Guitar God"

Saw this tour among other tours of theirs. Ed is the reason why I started guitar. The man influenced millions.

He influenced me 25 years ago to start playing and finally I play eruption. My hands still cramp at the end like you would not belive . The freebird solo will cramp you also. . I Can never get enough of evh. What people dont realize unless a guitarist. Evh was even better rythum guitarist. He once said alex and I always tried to fill the gaps. When you watch his rythum playing he plays cords but always throws fills and notes between the cords. No empty sp as ce in music ever. I have his wolfgang guitar and all his gear which is the best guitar and amp in the world. He is also a musical innovator when it comes to equipment also.

Eddie Van Halen raised the bar to a level back then that guitar players since then can only dream of achieving.

Eddie was a genius. There arent any words to adequately describe his talent. We have lost another great musician. Heartbreaking 💔

The music world, he is considered the creator of the “tapping” method on the electric guitar. I’m sure you can deduce what I’m referring to after watching it - using both hands on the neck. I don’t think many people realize how HUGE Van Halen was in the 80s! Eddie was a phenom on the guitar! True modern day Mozart (Whom he admired enough to name his son Wolfgang)! Did you know he did the guitar solo in MJ’s “Thriller” video? If not, give it a listen! RIP to a true legend - EVH!

The two handed playing is actually called two handed hammer-ons!! The tapping is the part where he plays the intro to mean street right after cathedral!! The solo he played with M.J. was on Beat it!!

When he says he got goose bumps, I thought, "as you should". Many have tried to copy a version of this solo, but you can tell when EVH does it.

I agree. The guitar world pushed him aside for his unique style. But guess what? Here we are, 30-40 years later. Where are the other guitarists? Crickets. Yet Eddie is still talked about. He was huge in the 80's. As time goes by this man will take his rightful place as the guitar god that he was.

Like so many others I found this after learning that Eddie Van Halen has passed. I truly appreciate your awesome take on his incredible, godlike talent. Seeing him play was marvelous and hearing you appreciate it was somehow even better. Thank you.

Eddie ruined an entire generation of rock guitarists who tried to emulate his style and couldn't pull it off.

Except for Vito Bratta from White lion. And oddly enough, Vito could pass for Eddie's twin brother. Must be a genetic component to that level of play! Watch enough Vito Bratta and you might even say that he pulled off EVH play cleaner and more melodically.

Gotta love seeing new age guys beholding the almighty Eddie Van Halen and getting blown to mars and back

This is an extended version, of course, but when guitarists first heart Eruption, there were no videos. People were like, "HOW'S HE DOING THAT??" He invented the finger tap. Eddie is very likely in everybody's top five of greatest guitarists of all time. He always had that impish grin on his face whenever he played. RIP Eddie.

Can't remember his name but the guitarist from Genesis started the "tapping" in Rock but Eddie perfected it. Eddie even said so in one of his interviews. Tapping actually was started by Flamenco guitarists even earlier than that. But again, Eddie perfected it, and is more famous for it for how he was able to do it so fast.

@@GeorgeGubkoJr Steve Hackett was tapping in the early 70s and EVH took it on. Haven't noticed anyone mention EVH's personal favourite guitarist: Allan Holdsworth who died a few years back. The whole “Live without a net” concert dvd is such a treat to watch! Not only is the music amazing, but the love and camaraderie that was in the band at that point is beautiful to behold.

Best guitarist of all time. No offense to Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, but this dude could FUCKING SHRED! He tore it up in ways nobody ever had or has since. Running with the Devil now. RIP, Eddie.

YES!!!! R.I.P., Edward Lodewijk Van Halen!!! He was the originator, not the imitator! And you can tell that he was trained in classical piano due to his ability to make an electric guitar sound like a cello, the interspersing of classical pieces throughout this solo, etc. Well done, sir! Now have a good rest because you deserve it!!!

When Can Halen first started, Eddie shattered many ear drums and teeth. Jaws everywhere dropped. And air guitarists were so blown away, that they didn't know what to do. Phenomenal guitarist. Self taught. Most back in the day practiced their asses off to hone their skills. That's why all the greatest guitarists were from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Most modern guitarists nowadays don't even come close.

Fun fact: Eddie and his brother started out playing opposite instruments, eddie started as a drummer. His brother played the guitar.

One of my favorite reactions you have ever done Jamel... it was the first I viewed and have been watching for almost a year now. The joy Eddie brought on stage and watching you embrace the ensuing insanity was enough for me to watch again. RIP Eddie Stank face 2000!

It's amazing using instruments to make music. All genres have their specific talents, but actually PLAYING music is what makes it so great. RIP Ed.

Some singers, like Elvis, have their own genre. Eddie has his own guitar genre.

It wasn't just about the tapping. It was about the treble picking and song writing. I totally agree with KC. Eddie took guitar in a new Direction. Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix also did the same thing. What he was doing was new and fresh. Of course you take some things from other guitar players. It's like any other instrument.

NO ONE could do what he has done. They had to rewrite music, because of his innovation! Yes Sir he is the guitar god!

I was fortunate enough to see this solo live at another venue (Blossom Music Center) What an other worldly solo.

Seen them in 82 and 84 when David Lee Roth was still with them, they were fantastic. Eddie was and is Unbelieveable. Great Live Shows!!!

I've always loved the looks on Eddie's face when he gets done of each set.

Thank you for the wonder in your voice and the respect in your words. This was good to watch on this sad day.

As an old man I love watching your reactions to the music I love

I was in high school when Van Halen's first album came out, and the thing I always have to point out to people who weren't there is just how revolutionary Eddie's guitar playing was. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, played guitar like that. Not yet anyway. Sure, by 1985 every rock guitarist was playing like Eddie did on their first album (or trying to), but that album came out in 1978. And by the time everybody else figured out how to play like that, Eddie had invented new shit for them to figure out. Every rock guitar "god" of the 1980's stood on the shoulders of Eddie Van Halen.

Eddie Van Halen.....the man & the icon. No one will be able to match your magic on the guitar. Rest in power. We will never forget you!

He was speechless. It's very hard to describe how good Eddie is. Seeing them live is an incredible experience. Eddie was an innovator who was in a league of his own. Rest In Peace, Eddie Van Halen.

Today's generation doesn't know. There was nothing back then. No cells, no pc's. Most everyone only had three channels on the TV. Eddie rocked the world. It was amazing. When you went to bed you saw his face and dreamt that you yourself would be like Eddie someday, if you could just motivate yourself hard enough to practice.

Remember that Eddie couldn't read music . So he learned by watching . He also won awards as a kid for playing classical piano

I've never seen anyone derive more pleasure from playing an instrument like a god than Eddie Van Halen in his prime.
