Eddie is not just gifted. When he was young and broke, he would spend hours and hours and hours practicing guitar and building his own guitars with modified parts, to get the exact sound he was looking for that nobody else had......the sound of which BLEW AWAY every guitar player who heard Eddie hit the scene in 1978. The perfect player arrived with the Holy Grail of guitar sounds. That guitar he's playing he built himself for less than $200 bucks.

Most of them after they get to a certain point in their life musically. They really don't listen to the radio, as a session player I have been all over the country. I have met 100's of professional musicians; myself included I agree listening to others music can have a bad influence on creativity of original music, Part of guitar / bass riffs, a drum fill or accents, keyboards arrangements, vocals. I still remember the first time I heard Van Halen in 1978. It seemed like every high school kid ran to the record store to buy their first album the day Runnin With the Devil hit the radio. We were already listening to Hendrix, Clapton and Jimmy Page and nobody thought it was even possible for a new guitar player to come around and blow people's minds. And there was Eddie. It was like hearing something you'd never heard before in your life and it was amazing. Perhaps the best thing about it was that as kids of the 1970's, Eddie and Van Halen felt like ours. They weren't rooted in a previous generation like Hendrix and Clapton and Page. They were our generation, and they belonged to us.

The "different breaks" are actually Eddie transitioning into different songs. This is called the Eruption solo, but Eruption itself is only maybe a minute long and it was the first "super fast" part you heard him playing. He opened up his guitar solo with a song called 3:16, which is a song he wrote as a lullaby to his son, Wolfgang. Then went into a part of another song, then Eruption before his first "break." Then when he went to the middle under the blue light and played the song that sounded like a violin, that is an entire song called Cathedral. The song where he is slapping his guitar is called Spanish Fly. So the "Eruption solo" here is really a set of several songs that came off different albums. Eruption just happens to be the solo he became famous for. He built his own guitars and gear because he couldn't afford all the special stuff other bands had. He was an inventor and innovator of instruments and sound. A musical genius. He got it from his father, who was a Dutch musician and had Eddie classically trained as a kid. Eddie didn't start off his musical life on the guitar...he started it on the piano. He actually picked up a guitar because he and his brother were starting a band, and they both wanted to play the drums but Eddie let his brother do it. And that in fact is who is playing the drums in this video. We are all glad they made that switch because it changed music history. You just witnessed true talent, and glad you girls enjoyed it!

I love watching people's reaction videos to Eruption. To see people discover what I have loved for years is an incredible and edifying thing. Now, this is called Eruption, but it really is an amalgam of several different solos Eddie has performed on their albums over the years. It includes Spanish Fly from Van Halen II, and Cathedral (where he makes the guitar sound like a cross between an organ and a violin) from Diver Down, and the intro to Mean Street (that's where he looks like he's just slapping the strings).

What the girl on the right said at around 8:53...the violin thing...thats exactly what I was thinking the first time I saw Eddie play live, 25 years ago. I'd never heard Cathedral before and it was unbelievable to me that he could make that sound with a guitar.

The great legends of the past from Eddie Van Halen, to Kirk Hammet, to Steve Vai, to Stevie Ray Vaughn, to Slash, to BB King, to Eric Johnson are who inspired all the guitarists of today to create music and art on the guitar (the greatest instrument in my opinion*). It is definitely, without a doubt in mind, a totally worth it journey that will inspire you and others for a lifetime. Keep rockin' you guys❤

Way back in his younger years, roughly early 80's, he would play with his back to the crowd for a lot of parts in the songs because he didn't want people (especially musicians ) figuring out and copying his fretwork. Took many years for him to showcase his finger work live.

Pope Anthony, not exactly sure where you got this idea, but we watched him the year the album came out playing it, and the year after. Finger taping wasn't new. You can watch Hendrix doing it and some others as well. What Eddie managed to do was a little like Hendrix on overdrive, where he was controlling the guitar as much as he was playing it. He's playing on the very edge of feedback, and that gives him a lot more to work with.

However, m woo is right. There are lots of people who've smoked for years, and never have an issue w/ cancer. It DOES increase your risk of getting it though. Glad you decided to quit. It's not only a health risk, but it's EXPENSIVE, too.
