When I was in high school, they played nearly every backyard party that I went to!

@@jamesjames1716 It's hard to remember since I was usually pretty stoned, hehe! It seems like they mostly played their own stuff, with maybe a few covers thrown in like "You Really Got Me". They hadn't quite refined their sound yet, and I actually got tired of seeing them every weekend, hahahaha! That was '73-'74. They polished up their music when they started playing clubs. Of course, Eddie's guitar work was always mind-blowing! Michael Anthony is still married to an old high school friend of mine.

You've never been to a backyard party. I would have seen you.
These kids are going to make it!
10 seconds into the song and Ed's tone has me shaking my head in disbelief. Still! Just blistering.
You can hear how important Michael Anthony's backing vocal is to the VH sound.
Only 88K views??? Come on VH nation! What a national rock and roll treasure!
Listen to that guitar TONE!!!! The Pasadena Civic shows are soundboard and sound amazing for that era.

Without the echo/reverb of the studio recordings, kinda reminds me of the Angus Young tone from the first few AC/DC albums, especially Let There Be Rock. Still totally Edward though for sure. Awesome to hear.
SO STINKIN COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is epic. Thank you so much for sharing. I love when Halen play Kinks. It just works so nicely. I can't wait to read the new book!
RIP Mr Halen, we remember 🎸🎸🎸🎸
I really like how Mike’s Bass Guitar comes through this recording. Classic balanced sound from the club days through Fair Warning that’s an early VH signature.

Michael Anthony is the GOAT
Did not know that they did _this_ Kinks song. Now I'm imagining them doing a medley of this and "Destroyer" (which is impossible for 1976 since that song came out in 1981).
You can tell that's EVH, all right! :)
Greg, You Sir Unearth The Type of "Historical Treasure" That I Love and I Thank You! #VANTASTIK
Awesome find. The solo is a foreshadow of the epic solo on 'you really got me ' on the first album

I’m so glad they went with “You Really Got Me.” Not that this is bad, but “You Really Got Me” is much more suitable for radio.

Not really. He worked out all these arrangements and solos well in advance.
Awesome , another gem from early VH . Alex with some nice kick ass drumming in there too
THANKS FOR SHARING THIS VH GEM GREG!!!!!! EDDIE IS KING!
So cool. I could hear just one lick and it's so evident that it's Eddie. Even that early in his career. This reminds me of some of the bootleg Randy Rhoads recordings with Quit Riot in that he played licks that ended up on Ozzy albums. Several of Eddie's licks in that solo are absolute classic Eddie-ism's. Same for the Queen song. Kind of like traveling back in time and seeing Van Halen on Sunset Strip...
Its so strange that hearing a college/club recording on youtube after almost 50 years passed after it but Van Halen always sounds great💯💯💯
Dave says if I have to do it I should do it all day and all of the night. I believe him. Dave wouldn't lie to me. Or you. Do it indeed! Solo sounded familiar.
I’m looking for me in the crowd in all the pics.
I'm just now watching this!! I swear I'm related to the guitar and drummer!!

Sounds better then anything VH has produced in years! Thanks for posting!
This 70’s VH stuff with Roth is way way better than all the stuff with Sammy many years later. LOVE every bit of it.
Greg, the book is Van-tastic!
Hey Greg,on this song I think they’re also doing that thing they used to do with the guys grabbing drumsticks and playing drums with Alex.
Never heard this one Greg very cool

This is a billion times better than the version which later appeared on their album.
Dave's not even out of the first verse and he's fucking up the lyrics !! Still love ya, Diamond....lol
Michael Anthony and those back I got vocals / harmonies! 😎
2:33 very similar Chuck Berry/Kinks lick used at the start of the Panama guitar solo.
Dave's banter in the early days reminds me of Paul Stanley a lot.

@@r38658 This show is in 76. They got signed in mid-77 after Ted Templeman saw them at the Starwood and immediately called Mo Ostin to see them, who then signed them on the spot. They played their last show at the Pasadena Civic Center in early Feb 78 just before starting their first tour to support the release of the first album.
Un earthed? Was it buried in the ground? This is sick sick playing ... sick I say.

+matttm Yeah I recognize that, I was a live-sound engineer back in the day and yes I do, I have some okay quality VH from I think their first trip to England, really great to hear the energy they put out back then, I saw them in the clubs about a dozen times before they got signed. I use to have a DAT of VH at Anaheim circa 1980-something that was really fun, but my DAT player stopped working. Do you collect? (my favorites are Pink Floyd, the Animals tour) Really like your icon photo btw!
