I couldn't sleep and woke up at 3:30AM, read 40 pages of Van Halen Rising, and then started my day...
Hearing these recordings is eye opening. In just two short years, Van Halen goes from performing at the local High School to recording one of the greatest debut albums in rock history. Even more impressive is their catalog only improved as their careers extended.

Have you ever heard Short End Of A Wishbone by Haywire? Their guitarist Marvin Birt was inspired alot by Edward.

You got that right, Paul! And I was one of those impressionable high schoolers when Van Halen played at our high school (La Cañada High (which was just West of Pasadena (and Muir High where Dave went))) in Oct. 1975. When I heard V.H I on record, I could NOT believe they were the same band from just two years earlier. MAN they came a long way!! Who could ever know we were witnessing history in the making?

Yes he is and they crapped all over him
This is so cool!!! Thanks again Greg!!!
Amazing stuff. It's not every rock band that you can dance to. Van Halen had that special talent. They're the only band I have ever heard that make cover tunes better than the original, even at this young age.

Can you imagine V.H. playing a backyard kegger with cops in helicopters circling around in the sky? lololol

Roth's one soulful S.O.B.

Thank you sharing this piece of early VH history.👍👍

Really, wow..
Cool! Thanks for posting Greg Renoff!
Al’s one of my Top 5 drummers. But…you can really hear the tempo problems (rushing) Templeman talks about in his book. Granted, if I go back and listen to board tapes of myself from younger days, I too did the same. So fair enough. He’s still a legend. And has feel for days.
Damn, Eddie had that killer tone even back then!

This is amazing thanks for sharing! Did you ever run across them covering Grand Funk’s Footstompin’ Music given its influence on So This is Love?
Thanks for these rare covers, At least I haven't ever heard these before. Do you have them covering ' LaGrange'?.
Michael Anthony....
Van Halen that have made a famous GFR song and a Bad Company song? the best they are the best
this awesome did they ever relaeast it and put on any vh album
Some people think David Lee Roth was inspired by Jim Dandy, but Ive always thought he channeled Mark Farner.
I’m surprised Ed wasn’t laying down a driving guitar rhythm on that grand funk tune
it really showcases how weak Roth's voice is.....you can tell by the mix, they made sure Ed's guitar was drowning ROth's voice
