In either pretenses it's sad because there's 3 variables; 1# the mother actually cared about the daughter however their parenting methods didn't communicate well with their affection and relationship to the daughter, #2 the daughter wishes her mother would say something like this, indicating that she felt despised, used, and non-existent to her parents, #3 Jennifer resented her parents, and so she just coldly thought of what would sound believable in her connection with her parents.

@@poffydaisy5134 Not to say that you are wrong in thinking this way but I want to offer a solution to your theory (behavior if she were a victim rather than perpetrator). 1) there are three main reactions to a shocking situation: fight, flight, freeze. Screaming would correlate more into fight or flight. Personally, I’m more of a freeze, meaning that my body freezes and I don’t make any noise. 2) going off the theory that she is a freeze type of person, it is also highly probable that shocking information would push someone to somewhat lack an emotional response. 3) idk man I’ve put my phone and remote in the fridge before, that may just be me being scatter brained though. Oh but the behaviors displayed in the video are very much out of the ordinary. They are that of theatrics, the constant looking down and up, the lack of tissue despite sniffling, and the stiffness of her position in the beginning vs the relaxing (edit: not relaxing but rather change in structure?, less boxed but slightly more confident) of her body further in the interview. This is just my opinion and I’m not a profesional in body language.

their type of parenting wasn't just "strict", it was a form of parenting that's quite normalized in asian cultures known as Tiger Parenting, and it's basically abuse. im not saying that what jennifer did was justified, but there's a lot more to this story than just "strict parenting". edit: only adding this because some people seem to be missing the point of my comment. i'm not saying jennifer is justified. i'm not saying other cultures can't parent their children in different ways. i'm simply explaining it how it was explained to me. tiger parenting has been explained to me as withholding affection and praise from the child so that they will work harder to earn that love, affection, and praise that they crave. there's more to it, but that's the gist of how it was explained to me. now please leave me alone about your random bullshit and projections 😌✨

Yes Same with African parents but I wouldn’t call it abuse but African parents are strict but you can tell they love you and wants the best . My parent always tell me we didn’t bring you to America to work at warehouse , we would’ve just let you stay at the village and become a teacher or something. Ik they want the best for me and my siblings that’s why they push us to go to school and become successful. I think the best option for jeniffer is to leave her parents and stay with her boyfriend since she didn’t want to go to school. But she choose to kill her Parents

  • @wwmhd

    @wwmhd

    2 жыл бұрын

@@browncookies8048 i'm glad that you have parents that love and support you 🤍 however, tiger parenting is different. it's a form of parenting that's not only extremely strict, but it also has no emotional connection. from what i've read and what i've heard from people who have tiger parents, affection is 0. they never say they're proud of you. they never say they love you. they don't hug you. everything is based on success - so i understand why she faked her grades. i don't believe she was justified in killing her parents whatsoever, and this case is chilling, but there are way more factors at play that weren't addressed in the JCS video. edit from wikipedia: "Tiger parents try to reinforce higher levels of psychological and behavioral control over their children than other parents. Tempering a child's self-esteem may be part of this strategy. Psychological control comes in many forms but is rooted when parents work to constrain children's autonomy through psychologically manipulative tactics such as the withdrawal of love or induction of guilt... It has been shown that tiger parents are less likely than other parents to compliment their children in public as well. Children raised by tiger parents may be met with emotional threats and physical punishments if they failed to practice their piano scales and meet their expectations. Moreover, some tiger parents do not allow their children to make some decisions on their own, whether in academia or daily life."

She clearly had mental issues. You don't just decide to kill, not even just a random person, but the people who raised you in an instant, there was clearly a lot of psychological damage, influence from the people who she associated with and she maybe even had an antisocial personality disorder which would all contribute to this... There's too much complexity to know exactly why someone does this sort of thing, but in her mind, at that point in time, somehow, it was justified.

The psychology behind this is interesting right? I feel like it's so common for Asian households to expect super scholarly success from their children, because that was also how they were raised when they were children (not that it doesn't happen in other ethnic backgrounds too). But mix that with Western values, and there's this contradiction between success with lucrative occupations and living your dreams; oftentimes, those two do not mesh. Then, the child is met with this difficult choice of pleasing their parents or disappointing them and following their own path. Eventually they can break, like Jennifer. Usually they don't end in murder obviously. I have mixed feelings towards the parents, and no they didn't deserve this. Though it's borderline if not psychological abuse the way some parents act towards their children in regards to subjects like school and grades. I just feel a connection to this story as a first generation Vietnamese American, who faced similar issues growing up, although now I just have severe depression and anxiety and my dreams have been completely shattered and scattered across the pavement. There's so much more to life, and all I did in my childhood was focus on school. Throughout those 17 years of being a young human, I never went to a friend's house to hang out because I was afraid it'd be deemed as slacking on studies. I never went out with a friend to have fun somewhere. I just missed out on a lot of opportunities in general to make memories with people I enjoyed being with. I never once went to a school dance. Getting out of the house and living away from my parents in college led to the best years of my life. Didn't expect to just ramble on and talk about myself but here we are.

While her parents did not deserve what happened to them, I feel VERY little sympathy for them as far as Jennifer's hatred towards them. They literally mentally abused their children. Jennifer, in my opinion, snapped, and could no longer handle the pressure. Different people respond to this abuse and pressure in different ways, and unfortunately, she responded like a psycho. Again, she deserves every bit of her punishment, but it's hard not to feel empathy towards her. She lived as basically a child being controlled by her parents for years, in an abusive parent-child relationship.

As a child with a Vietnamese background, I understand there are stricter parents. But nothing like murdering your parents is okay. It's so painful to see someone so sickening. Our older generation came to a different country to give their family a better life. And all her parents wanted was for her to be successful.

Should she have arranged the murder? No absolutely not, she should have taken the option to leave the family. But her parents were both fools who don't know how to be parents - no support, no empathy, no upliftment - just stupid commands and rules and milestones. Even with that she was doing well with figure skating but that dream was taken away from her because of injury through no fault of her own. And did the parents have empathy? No. They started harping on her for the next thing. For the record I am from Asia and I know what you think you understand but you don't actually understand. From the day she was a baby this was all she knew - parents who had no empathy and who only had demands. I am certain that her parents themselves were not top students or great athletes, but yet they were able to afford a comfortable life. So why pressure the children to such an extent when you know that even with modest achievement you can have a good life? This is misguided parenting. Imagine if she had more normal understanding parents, she wouldn't be the top in the world but she would have a decent job as a piano teacher, probably married, and probably have her own kids. It's frustrating to me how such a massive change in life circumstance can happen with something as simple as empathetic parenting. I hope that this case teaches people that parenting is not just about demanding things from your children.

From a video I watched about this case(it's in Chinese, a bit hard to translate), her parents are *extremely* strict. They enforce their own dreams that they couldn't achieve on Jennifer, made her attend multiple classes outside of school WHILE maintaining straight As in school. Honestly, I'd believe that it is actually more extreme than what I just explained in words(considering this started since young). Apparently, Jennifer feared what might happen as her grades started to fall and faked her report book/grades, even college applications etc. just to satisfy her parent's ego. There are different amounts of stress everyone can handle, but that seems a bit too much for a child. She found her happiness, in order to keep it, she will need to get rid of what's blocking her way. Of course, I'm not saying that murdering is the right way, but Jennifer was pushed to the extreme. Imagine the endless hours of agonizing anxiety, pain, helplessness and stress she felt.

I’m a retired LEO and was a criminal investigator. I can tell you from experience from questioning someone who has been involved w this type trauma they are not as articulate and calm as she was as she told her story. 90% of victims can hardly speak while crying. No, sobbing. It takes a while to get a full story from them because they’re replaying what happened in their minds and while they do they relive the horror and sobbing again. It’s not as easy as her story was. It’s very hard as the person having to question and to push them for info so we can try and find the offender or make the case. We know how hard it is and I hated having to make them tell the story over & over because we know it’s just horrifying for them to relive it over & over again. I hated it but it was necessary. It’s very easy to pickup on lies when they’re as clam as she was under the circumstances.

There are incomprehensible psychos out there, buts it’s crazy to think about how many criminals act with reasons. People aren’t all criminals just because they are villains. If she’s under so much pressure for her whole life to cause depression and suicidal acts, it starts to make sense. It’s them or her. Like the first investigator said, random things are usually not so random. Strive to be better people.

  • @Scandium_quasar

All criminals act with reason, no matter their psychological state. That reason can be completely illogical and irrational, but in the moment that they do the crime, it makes sense to them or they make it make sense. In the case of people with antisocial personality disorder for example or other psychological disorders, the person sometimes literally does not have the ability to empathise or sympathise with others so their reason is based solely on what is advantageous to them and on their base desires, but that's still a motive. There is no such thing as "evil", there is not such thing as an inherently "good" or an inherently "bad" person, just people people reasoning and doing things based on those reasons and what they think they should do. These reasons are affected by everything, other people, mental problems, trauma, etc... but no one is born "evil", no one does anything because they're "evil". Just based on what they've been taught is right or wrong and what they can feel is right or wrong. Even most people who feel high amounts of empathy, with the right circumstances can be brought to do horrendous things. And people who don't feel or feel low amounts or empathy can do much worse. To prevent these kinds of things happening for people with empathy, they need to be brought up in the right environment, be taught how other people feel, made to understand what is right and wrong and to avoid psychological damage. For people with low empathy it's more complicated. But there is no "evil". Just people doing things based on they think they should. And sometimes they are very very wrong. Some come to regret it right afterwards. Some after rehabilitation and therapy. But some don't and some can't, and that's most likely because they are broken inside. But yes, people don't do things for no reason, people aren't ever random, they always have a motive for everything they do, small or big, bad or good.

yeah, actually a lot of criminals are locked up because they acted out as a result of untreated trauma, mental disorders/illnesses, etc. Many prisons don’t really accommodate any of that though so instead of issuing therapists or other professionals to help prisoners improve upon their wrongdoings and learn the effects/possible effects of their actions and repent for them by giving back to the community or something, they’re just treated like shit and end up in prison again after they’re released

@@SteelSpurs No, there is no such thing as inherent "evil", only "evil" actions (based on the morals of the majority). Nobody is born "evil". They just do what they think they should based on their environment (what they've been taught, or not taught) and based on internal things that they can't really control; so emotions and desires (like people with ASPD literally can't feel empathy for others). But obviously with the right education and drugs, these desires and emotions can be controlled or suppressed; for example people with ASPD can be taught morals which are usually inherently known by most and for example people with bad paraphilias or other desires can be taught that it's wrong and can even be treated. Like I said in previous comments, anybody can be made "evil" under the right circumstances; I.E. with bad education, which basically proves that there s no such thing as "evil", also known as inherent "evil". Only "evil" actions.

And the whole 'he's evil cause he enjoys it' is just bull, on the surface level that even the person who does it might believe to be true because he or she doesn't know their own trauma, cause how could you? When you're too close to the sun, you can't see all of it. ever. In a perfect, sane world, there would be no bad apples. But of course, one must always point fingers cause what else is there to do. Resolve the root problem and make a world where this shouldn't happen? No. Punish them, they sinned. If only these people were helped instead of given time of how to plan their revenge and set free to a world that literally hates them and would do anything to avoid them. Well...besides the ones who are doing illegal things. yay. They just say: you're bad. So we're not going to help you change. Just lock you up. So, empathetic...that'll teach them to be human. The media really doesn't help saying: oh, look, she bad, he good. Good must kill bad. It doesn't matter that if the bad did that he's just bad, if the good did it, he had a good reason. I think it has something to do with their experience as well. In the 50's moving forward they thought that they could just get a job, work hard and you'd be successful. Then the industries started requiring a minimum educational attainment. Then they realized how important it is to get an education. Why that's not a statement defending the authoritarian parenting style. It's more like a "we are all fucked by life" and that manifests in different ways. It's not like they experienced a great childhood and then just decided on a crazy whim to run their household in a very fascistic manner.

duty counsel is an on-call lawyer you'll also hear the term in courthouses in canada, where they're "floater" lawyers who help out anyone struggling with the process (in family court, for example)

Her case was so well known that even my parents, who are not internet savvy, knows and follows this case intensely. When this blew up they were discussing the issue in length. I think that is the moment that they realize that tiger parenting was detrimental to their child's mental health. I was similar to Jennifer. School from 7-3, then Tae Kwon Do from 3-5, English lessons (6-8) on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays (I live in a non-english speaking country), Violin classes (6-8) on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, private tutors from 8-10. On Sunday I go to a swimming class from 7-11am and a violin orchestra meet from 1-4pm. This ended when I entered high school because I want to go to a boarding school. They let me go, to a military boarding one. It was horrendous and grueling but it was comical that I felt most free at a military boarding school than my own home.

I know this type of parenting is normal in asian cultures.... but...... if my parents were like that, I would probably runaway or put an end to my life. I wouldnt kill them tho, but I wouldnt be able to live like that.

In my opinion, it's not normal. My parents are strict too but not to the point that they're controlling me.

I have same situation as her. It's really painful having a strict parents--I always thought about some edgy stuffs and did edgy stuffs to myself. So, yea. Show that you love your kid. That's enough.

Thank you 🥺 (This literally made my heart flutter. I'm weak for people showing genuine concerns) Since, I'm an only child--I've always love and care about my friends. So far, I'm okay. I don't have the best situation inside the house but I'm lucky to have my friends around my social space. ( Though, It's kinda sad that i don't see them personally since we're quarantined but I can still contact with them online. :))
