Using Vertical Raised Panel Bits

If you're intimidated by large panel raising bits, or don't have a large horsepower router to spin those big bits, you can still raise panels on your router table. A vertical panel raising bit (amzn.to/4cvdtcC) can be used with lower horse power routers, and many woodworkers find them easier to set up and use than horizontal panel raising bits.

This is an excellent presentation. Here are a couple of suggestions from someone who's made a few thousand raised panel doors. (I ran the door crew in a furniture mill while I was in school. We averaged 100+ pairs of doors each shift.) First, this will definitely go smoother if you use a tall fence. This is particularly true with larger panels. As wood is removed by the router, the amount of wood in contact with the fence and the table is reduced, making it more difficult to keep the panel from wobbling as the cut is made. (If the panel wobbles as the cut is made, the thickness of the edge of the edge of the panel will differ along the width or length of the panel -- making it much more difficult to get panel to fit properly within the frame.) A tall fence will make it much easier to take a uniform cut with each pass. Second, a properly set up feather board will also make things easier. As George mentioned at the end of the video, you don't want the feather board to be too close to the surface of the router table. That will tend to cause the panel to tip away from the top of the fence. And, as he pointed out, a feather board that's too high may interfere with your ability to use a push block as you move the panel along the fence. But, a properly set up feather board, particularly when used with a tall fence, will help ensure that the panel is kept flat against the fence as the cut is made.
