Using Image Capture To Scan Documents
Ғылым және технология
macmost.com/e-2599 Instead of trying to use the software provided by your scanner's manufacturer, use the built-in Image Capture app on your Mac instead. You can scan documents and photos with a variety of settings and options.

The scanning facility on my Canon multi-function device hasn't worked for ages - this worked just as promised. What a boon! A real bonus. Thank you.
I had no idea this function was built into my Macs. Thanks so much for showing us how to use it.
Gary, thank you once again for a helpful video. I have been going into System Preferences/Printers and Scanners to access the scanner. Now I have added the Image capture to the dock. Great. Have a fantastic Christmas!
I've used image capture for years and I never realised it had a scan function. It's actually much better than the scanner manufacturer's app so I'll be using it from now on. Thanks Gary!
I love this guy I never knew how to make my scanner work with my MacBook and watching this I was up in run in less then 60 sec smh
What would I do without your tutorials? This one is proof that I am not using my Mac to it's full potential. Thousand thanks.
A very useful video tutorial today! As always thanks for showing us how! Thank you, Gary! 👏👍🏻❤️
Reliably consistent … I’ve been usin digital scanners since 1989 and I still learned a new trick. In this case, I didn’t realize I could change the orientation before I hit “scan.” Keep up the impressive work Gary.
Another gem of a informative video. Truly Gary, I feel you should be nominated to be entered into the Guinness book of world records for churning out so many Mac-informative videos🙏😊
Brilliant as always. Reloaded drivers and now works sometimes.
I've been using Image Capture for quite a while yet ignoring a lot of useful features you mentioned such as PDF using format but even better "image correction" in manual mode. It's like I've had a whole new scanner without realizing it. Thanks Gary👍🏾👍🏾
Thank you Gary for another great video. Have a Nice Christmas!
Wow, I've been using my Image Capture just by figuring it out but you've shown me something very important I had no idea it would do: keeping the name of the document and scanning other documents that maybe won't fit into the document feeder that can be added to the existing document. Excellent information -- thanks.
Thanks man. Your videos are great... I am learning a TON!!! I appreciate you.
Thank you I found this so helpful I hadn’t mastered the scanning but now I feel ok with it. Still need to master labels still not managed to set it up. Thank you once again.
Thank you so much, I'm about to turn and I was able to understand your instructions
Thanks Gary, I wasn't able to get my multi function printers scanner working using the manufacturers drivers & had no clue the I could use image capture on my MacBook. I've learned so much from your channel - Thank You
Thank you thank you thank you, I am so glad I am subbed to your channel, you have taught me so much, I was at my wits end trying to get my scanner to work....I just love Mac
Excellent Tutorial as always Gary!
Hey Gary, I did indeed find it useful. I never realized Image Capture could scan documents. Thank you very much.
Excellent! I didn't realize all the features of Image Capture. Thanks.
Hi Gary, I did not come across this possibility. Thanks for this information.
I had this capability all along and didn't know it until this video. I have an HP Color Laser Jet attached (shared, actually) and it worked immediately. No more sneakernet with a thumb drive! THANK YOU!
I did not know this! Thank you so much for sharing this. It greatly simplified my photo scanning process.
Great information. Thanks for the tutorial
Informative as always
Very useful Gary! Thanks a lot
Hey Gary: Great info. Thorough yet quick. (I find 300 dpi good enough for scanning 6x4 photos.)
I got a Mac book pro for Christmas and could not get my Epson printer/scanner to scan. I even called Epson and they couldn't make it work. Your video was great and now I'm up and running. Thank you.
Thank you. Very helpful.
Excellent info Thanks
Hey Gary get video as always, once again showing me something I didn’t know about my Mac. Happy Holidays!
very useful - thank you! 👍🏻
Wow, I'm learning. I'll watch it again and again till I get it logged in my 'just do it brain'. Grazie 🙂
Excellent, thanks
I had no idea we had this powerful tool in our MAC’s. Thanks!
Very useful Gary ,,,, Thanks
Thank you so much for this video! I knew I had this app on my iMac but I didn't know how to use it. My printer software is just like yours so this video was so helpful for me.
Hi Gary, some of this I knew but as always you tech me above & beyond! I will watch this again & take some notes till I get more familiar with it. One thing I have trouble with is Adobe Acrobat for PDF's. I didn’t used to but I hate using it now since it is so slow & locks up etc. Same way with emptying the Trash. It is terrible. I have a 2014 Mac Mini my son gave me a few yrs ago & he put upgraded it as much as he could, 1T. So I ca't figure out what wrong. I will see him this weekend so I will corner up with questions, lol I hope he does not tell me it is time to upgrade. Although I know there are rumors that a new Mini will come out next year. Thanks as always for great videos!,
I Have been scanning for over ten years and never used this app which I will from now on. Thanks.
I was surprised you didn’t mention Live Text, as an option for extracting text from the document. Since you were talking about making the file as small as possible
I was doing it all wrong. Doing a search for scanning DPI for screen photos was saying 72-96 DPI, but the resolution was way too low. Gonna have to redo my scans using 300 DPI and the HEIC format. Thanks Gary.
This is great, I'm moving over to an iMac next week and my workflow requires me to scan documents. And while my Brother scanner works well, it's quirky. I'll skip the OCR because I have yet to find a mfr that has an OCR that works well. The 300 switch on DPI is handy especially that I have vision problems, however with 1TB of storage included with MS Office 365, this isn't as much of an issue.
Awesome your do good luv ya
Gary. I didn’t know the capture app was so powerful. Maybe you could do a video of Automation with OCR. Today I’m using hazel with PDF Pen using a script. I used to use Prizmo with Automator plus hazel. But I found PDFPen ocr better. I will change my setup again since I founded PDFPen upload to a server to do OCR, and I found it do a poorly work when try to do batches files.
Thank you for this. I have one question though. Why go through image capture when you can just go straight to system preferences since your devices are already connected. Cos you can scan when you open your system preferences.
Apple should pay you big money for all your work you do !!
Hi Gary, I use Synergy to share my keyboard and mouse from my M1 MacMini to the MacPro but after a recent Mac update, Synergy is leaving its icons on the Dock. After a while, I ended up with a lot of icons stretching my Dock and I cannot remove it unless I restart the MacMini. Any suggestions for me to fix this problem?
Do you recommend a specific scanner to buy?
I never was able to scan with my printer, until now! Thanks.

Me too Robert. I have to go to Settings & Printer like Gary did.
Hi Gary, when I choose "Manual" for Image Correction Image Capture crashes. I"m on a 2021 M1 24" iMac, running macOS Monterey 12.0.1. I tried it several times and it crashed each time. An incident report was sent to Apple. Edited to add that when I scanned a photo in HEIC it did not crash when I chose "Manual" for Image Correction. 🤷🏼♂️
I've used 'Printer & Scanner' from the System Folder', but sometimes, the scanner won't get started right. Resulting in an error message. However, when I use Image Capture, the process goes more smoothly. Should I delete the scanner from the 'Printer & Scanner' window?
Gary, I've found (at least with my Fujistu scanner) that scanning documents to TIFF allows me to append just as you described with PDF. Unlike PDF, however, scanning to TIFF creates documents that cooperate with the new Live Text feature, which largely obviates the need for OCR (especially if Apple were to add a search feature to Live Text in a coming release).

The trouble is tiff images are huge.
Thanks bunches, I am dyslexic so sometimes I just do not see things.
Thanks for your answer, didn't see the setting to print to 125% etc.

From which app, exactly?
Did you just plug the printer in and this worked? Or did you have to install the manufacturers print driver?

I use my iphone now , so much easier and convenient , quality is surprisingly good tbh
Gary, I have been getting an error message (-21345) "Failure to Open Connection" on my HP Smart / HP Envy Pro 6400, which prints fine on my internet connected Intel Mac (18,2). I have called Apple support about a week ago (circa Dec 10, 2021) and no solution for this error. Ended up scanning directly with the HP Smart app as a solution. Any idea what is causing this error?
This was a great review. Thank you. I just updated by Mac Os Big Sur 11.64 and I am now getting error message when I try to open capture image. I get an error message of cannot connect to scanner. it recognizes the scanner but does not connect. Do you know how to fix it?

You should first try the support for the scanner.
Why not use the import facitiy in Preview? Is there any advantage of using Image Capture over Preview?
@macmost
2 жыл бұрын
The is the same, but you don't need to then save it in Preview when you are done. You can do directly to a PDF or image file. Probably not much difference for one thing, but for scanning in several things it is probably better. Also, you can scan directly to Photos or Mail.

@@macmost Thanks. Also the combine into single document checkbox is not in Preview.
I didn’t see you show how to use Auto Selection with Multiple Images.
Is it possible to scan text doc and have it print larger so the text size is larger?

Yes. You can print and set it to 125% or whatever you like.
Good Morning, I usually takes me a few days from watching your video to sit and work through it on my Mac. I never knew what the two round dots were with the line between them. It alway seemed a nuisance...and know I know....But my question on this video. I have placed the image capture on my doc. I have tried to drag it to launch pad, but it will not stick in there. Is there a way I can get image capture to be part of launch pad? A second question is that I have my Canon all in one printer plugged into the back of my Mac by a printer cable. It does not show in devices but comes up in shared. Thoughts as to why it may not show up in devices? It is so much quicker using image capture. Again thank you...

It should already be in LaunchPad. All apps are. Search for it there. You'd have to contact Canon and ask them about the other thing.

Hey Gary, would know why my scanner’s flatbed option has disappeared? I’m stumped. I was just using the flatbed to scan transparent images, but after I disconnected my scanner, those options are no longer available. The only options available are “text” “color” and “black and white”
@creatureguevara666

Also, the only mode availability is “letter” or “A4”

That's highly dependent on your scanner model. Contact the manufacturer for support on that.
Hi Sir, my printer has a scanner on it, it's connected to my mac, but in image capture it doesn't show anything on share, how to fix it Sir? thanks

See if there is some driver or extension you need to install from the manufacturer. If you can't find something like that, then ask them for support on this.
I've never really understood why they saw "JPEG 2000" as an output. Is this really used that much?
Help...Weird thing happening. I used Image Capture to download all my pictures and movies from my iphone X. I saved them to a folder on my desktop. The issue is with the .MOV files the ones that have a thumbnail will play. But most don't have a thumbnail and will not play and when I try to open them I get a pop up that says, "Additional software is required for QuickTime to playback this media. It may be available from the QuickTime Components page" any ideas as to why this is happening? and how to fix it? Does this mean all the .MOV files with no thumbnail are shot? Side quesion: How can I download the saved phone audio messages on my phone? my Imac I'm using is an 2009 with ElCap Ver, 10.11.6 Thanks ahead of time.

You are using a very old version of macOS. These are probably videos in a format that this old version of macOS doesn't know about but would work if you had something newer. To get a voicemail, look at it on your iPhone and use the Share button and choose a method. I'd suggest AirDrop, but with such an old Mac you may need to use another Share method.
Can you use Image Capture to scan documents with your iPhone and upload them to your Mac?
@macmost
2 жыл бұрын
Image Capture is a Mac app. It isn't on your iPhone, and your iPhone can't connect to scanners anyway. You can "scan" thing with your iPhone's camera using many different apps, or just in the Files or Notes app. If you use an app like Files you can simply save to iCloud Drive and they would appear on your Mac. If you are in a folder on your Mc and want to scan a document to that folder, right click in an empty space in that folder and choose to "Import From....." then scan or take photo with your iPhone or iPad. It will save that scan or photo to that folder without having to save it to downloads or tot the desktop first.
Every time I scan several pages to color pdf, Image Capture crashes. Does it happen to others?

I haven't experienced that.
My new MacBook Air with M1 chip can't pick up my scanner in Image Capture. The scanner can't work also in System Preferences/Printers ,scanners. It can print but can't scan. But my iMac 27 with Intel chip and all previous McBooks that I had with Intel Chip can work with the scanner/printer. Image capture is picked up also by Image Capture by iMac with Intel Chip.

Man, these ignoramuses at Apple are getting on my nerves extremely. Every time I open the image capture app, the window is way too small to work with. This damn app never remembers the position and size of the window. Who thinks up such bullshit? Mac Studio, Ventura, image capture version 8
The operation couldn't be completed. (com.apple.imagecapture error 4294957394.) (-9902). Do you know how to find out about this please Gary?
