    This helped me tremendously. I wasn't sure about the dotted lines and sizing of a single document, so I'll have to watch the video again. I had a terrible time scanning a document that my mac wasn't showing up on my printer. Fortunately I used a USB to get the document scanned for an application I had to submit.

I learned a lot from this video for photos and feel pretty good about the results. Is there a way to scan 35mm slides using Image Capture? My Canon all in one doesn't have the slide adaptor but if I buy a slide scanner will Image Capture show settings for slides?

  • @TheMacWhisperer

    It won't bring up any special settings for slides, but you can use the custom sizing feature, and manually select the area where the slides are, and that will allow you to do multiple slides at a time easily.

    I am so glad I stumbled on your video! I really like how large you make the examples and your use of "can't miss" arrows and highlights and such. I have subscribed and hope to learn more about my Mac via your very clear, easy to follow tutorials. Thank you! Can you help with this question? I had already been using the HP Easy Scan downloaded on my Mac, but at some point must have deleted the "easy start" which I guess is the "driver"? So I read your response to another person about why my scanner/printer wasn't showing up under "shared". I went to the HP page and downloaded the "easy start" again. It said "system extension was installed incorrectly and cannot be used). I thought maybe it just meant the "easy scan" part couldn't install since it already was on my computer, so I tried anyway your next step but when I click on my device now showing up under "shared", it just says failed to open a session on the device. I was going to contact HP but wasn't sure they would appreciate knowing I wanted to stop using their Easy Scan and begin using the Image Capture. Any insight for me ?

    I would try restarting both your computer and your printer/scanner and then try again. Restarts can fix a ton of issues. But you should also know that HP created an issue for Apple a few months ago by changing some internal settings that messed up image capture for particular people... so if the restart doesn't solve it, you may want to call HP and have them walk you through reinstalling the driver properly to alleviate that issue. Also make sure you are up to date with all your Mac software updates so that doesn't create a fixable issue...

    @@rachaelrichardson8811 updates and upgrades are different. Updates are minor fixes to the software you have, upgrades are all new software. You certainly don't have to upgrade (I have a bit of a Love/Hate relationship with Big Sur), but you want to make sure you are always at least fully updated. But I will add that if you never upgrade to a newer OS more and more things will stop working. I encourage my clients to be no more than one major upgrade behind. Since you are on Mojave (10.14), you did not upgrade to Catalina, or Big Sur meaning you are now 2 upgrades behind. In September Apple will release a new upgrade and you will be 3 behind... I recommend bringing your Operating System current before that happens.

    Either you need to plug your printer/scanner into your computer with a USB cable, or you need to make sure that your printer scanner is on the network. If it is on the network and it is still not showing up, then you may need to install the driver for your printer scanner onto the computer to fix it.

    When you scanned the newspaper, the rotated selection box (rotation angle not at zero) will reduce the file size because it's not lossless when saving as a Tiff file. If you reposition the newspaper on the scanning glass with your hands so that it's straight, and you scan it again with the rotation angle set to zero, and save as a Tiff, the file size will be larger. It seems that Image Capture does not have lossless rotation. That doesn't seem to happen if scanning from Preview.

    Assuming your old machine and your new machine are both on the same Wi-Fi network, they should see the same devices. If they don’t, it’s most likely because you have not installed the driver for your printer/scanner on your new machine. Most printers scanners will automatically install, but some need a driver from the website. The first thing to do is to go to the Apple menu, system preferences, printer and scanner and see if your printer shows up there. If it doesn’t, click the plus button in the lower left corner and see if your computer can see/add it. If it doesn’t see it, or can’t add it, your next step is to go to the website for your printer/scanner manufacturer, and find the driver download from there. Once you install the scanner driver, it should locate it. But in the vast majority of cases clicking the plus button in the printer preference section will allow you to add it and will automatically install the driver for you. Let me know if you get it solved! Thanks for watching!

    if you scan a multipage doc using the flatbed and you check combine into single document how do you go through the process and end up with a pdf on your computer??

  • @TheMacWhisperer

    @TheMacWhisperer

    Жыл бұрын

    Provided you have it set to PDF and combine pages, each time you scan a page it is automatically adding it to the PDF you have created that is saved wherever you have selected it. When you are done scanning, just open that doc and you will have everything in it. Remember that the name is what allows it to be a multi-page document, so if you scan at a later point, but keep the name and location the same it will add that new scan to the previous document (which can be helpful if it's intentional and super annoying if it's not.)

  • @TheMacWhisperer

    @TheMacWhisperer

    3 жыл бұрын

    Size is a little misleading when you are talking about digital scans. When you print something it has a real physical size (5"x8", 8.5x11, etc) But when you scan a document it can be printed at literally any size you want, the difference is the quality at which it will print. So you are never really looking for it to be "exactly the size you scanned". The key is choosing the resolution. 75dpi will create a very small low-quality image, 600dpi will create a huge image that is way too large and not made to be printed at a normal level. I generally default to 300dpi so it is good quality, but not too large of a file. Then if you need to print it, print it at whatver size you like.

  • @TheMacWhisperer

    @TheMacWhisperer

    3 жыл бұрын

    +Sherry Newton it actually is an attachment even though it shows up inside the mail message. On Apple, single page attachment show up visually. You can right click it and choose view as icon from the menu… But recognize that it is still an attachment regardless of how it looks to you. On Windows machines, attachments are shown as icons… So that the users aren’t afraid to open them (because of virus concerns). On Mac we don’t have viruses. So attachments are automatically opened. It saves a step when you are looking at email attachments (so you can just see them inline rather than having to double click on them) but you can easily change the view to “as icon” with a right click.

    On the right side details screen, you should see a section that says "use custom size". This is for scans that are not the size of a normal piece of paper (like a photograph). If that is checked, uncheck it and you should be able to choose the paper size. If you are scanning something smaller than a piece of paper, use your mouse to drag a box across the image you are scanning (this is called a bounding box) and will tell the computer what "area" you want it to scan. But that is only necessary if you have the custom size checked on.

    To add a printer go to system preferences (under the Apple Menu), go to printers, and click the add (plus button) at the bottom right. It SHOULD see your printer (provided it is on Wifi and/or plugged in), then click the add button and it should be available. In super rare cases (usually with brother or Epson printers) you may need to go to the printer website and download a specific driver (either for printing or scanning), but 95% of the time the system will do that for you.

    Your voice audio is way to quiet and your bumper music practically blows my speakers as a result!

    👋Sorry about that. This is one of my earlier videos, I have fixed my audio and the bumper music in future videos, but I have not been able to adjust on past videos. My apologies to your eardrums!!! 🤷‍♂
