Using a Bone Inlay Stencil for a BOLD FURNITURE MAKEOVER
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This “bone inlay” look has been on my furniture bucket list for too long! After seeing a few smaller home decor pieces at HomeSense this weekend, I decided it was finally time to take the plunge. This look was time consuming and a little finicky but I’m obsessed with the overall vision that I was able to create!

Quick and Easy Tip: The easiest way for me to cover glass or mirrors is to use a deck of cards. I just slide them in and over lap them. Sometimes I need to use tape to hold the cards together. It's quick and easy and hardly any glass or mirror clean up. It really does keep the paint off these surfaces especially when I am tired and get a bit sloppy with the paint.
I applaud you for the patience it must have taken to apply all that stenciling and touch up. Beautiful desk. Great work.
I love what you did to this vanity! My Mom died 2 years ago & I have inherited her vanity with a mirror. I would really like to do this to her vanity. I have done some stenciling so I have no worries there. I have worked in craft stores for many years. I will let you know if I accomplish this. Thank you for sharing your makeover!
My chin dropped and my eyes bugged out when you said when you were going to do and, true talk, had no faith. But it turned out sooooo beauuuuutiful!!!!! It really takes a lot of love and patience to make it turn out so stunningly.
That is STUNNING!! I really want it for myself (and since it was your grandmother's, I hope you will keep it for yourself). I don't think your perfectionism was misplaced at all: it really paid off, as the piece looks realistic without looking slapdash! I think it is great to see you do a variety of different types of furniture and finishings, and not just stick with the simple, slick, sophisticated pieces you do so well, so I am really looking forward seeing what you try next time! Thank you for sharing! ... (edit: oops... I wrote my comment then scrolled down and saw that everyone else said "stunning", "stunning", "STUNNING" too... but it really is!)

Ditto! Such creativity. Love uniqueness ❤
WOW!! Talk about a labor of love, this is it. I love it! It is so very beautiful. I really love old vanities. I have one that is about 70 years old and I am going to strip it down and leave it natural. It has had several different colors on it. ONe painted on top of the other. It will also be a labor of love. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video. Take care, stay safe.

That sounds like it’s going to be a beautiful project! Good luck ❤️
I didn’t think I was going to like it, but oh.my.goodness....I actually love it!!! It’s gorgeous❤️❤️
I can't believe what a gourgeous piece you made out of it! Quite amazing and every minute work worth it! Thank you Katie! I bet the little old furniture feels so proud now...
I've had the bone inlay stencil for a long time and never got up the nerve to use it. You did an amazing job !! This piece is stunning !! You have given me the incentive to give my bone inlay stencil a try very soon. Thanks Katie for a great video !!
Oh, Katie! You are amazing, your work is amazing, your visions are amazing! Another beautiful piece. I agree with another comment; I hope you keep this in your family! Your grandmother would be proud!
OMG I love this so much Katie. If I saw this in a store I would be running to get to it. Beautiful job as always. Perfectly imperfect is always good. You have inspired me to do this on an old jewelry armoire that I have. Always look forward to your videos.
The fun you had creating this came through. It is a beautiful piece and fun.
Amazing, I could never have that much patience! Loved that you reused the hardware without the backplate! Looked perfect and upcycling is always better in my book🙌😍
Your grandmother would be so proud of you with this make over👏👏👏
Beautiful job! Love how the hemp oil tones down the brightness of the lighter colour, making it look more authentic!
I think the problem with stenciling with a brush is the bristles want to bend outward and under the edges of the stencil no matter what type of stroke you use. And the sponge does the opposite by pressing the stencil down against the piece. Gorgeous!!!

A stencil brush is made and meant to be used by pouncing not brushing which prevents the paint from going under the stencil.

Zee- I totally agree with you and that’s exactly why using a sponge gives a far superior result 😉

Stenciling is fun and easy with stenciling brush, make-up sponge and even a foam roller. The most important thing about stenciling is how well the ACTUAL stencil is placed on the surface. Spray adhesive is the best way to keep the stencil flat so it won't move if you do pounce the stencil brush.

When she offloaded using the brush she was offloading onto painter’s tape, which is not at all absorbent. With the sponge she was offloading onto a paper towel which is super absorbent.
Such pretty stencil! My personal taste is with a bit less stencil, but it's so pretty. Who wouldn't like to stare at it?! Bold and Beautiful 🏵️
Beautiful! (It's not complicated to make a mold and resin duplicate for one or two small pieces like the backplate of the drawer pull, btw. Worth trying if you really love the hardware.)
Wasn't sure how you were going to approach this project. And it came out so cool. Great job. Thanks for sharing!
Wow wow wow! Excellent work, love the hemp oil, I need to try this! Tip: try using an old deck of cards around the inside of the mirror frame, then just slide out when done painting, quick and easy!

Happy Saturday Katie! I found two brand new West Elm bone inlay end tables from my local thriftstore. I decided to gift them to one of my besties since l'm decorating her new home. The vanity turned out undoubtedly gorgeous.
This vanity turned out so lovely. Your attention to detail is amazing. Great Job!
This is delightful! Doing the inlay on this vanity gives this design a completely different vibe than when it’s done on a piece that’s more modern. The way you’ve done this also allows the vanity to shine. Often, I love the inlay pattern but I can’t actually see the furniture it’s on. I don’t know if that makes sense. I love this and that’s why I enjoy your videos so much. You try so many different things in a unique way. Thank you for another great video and I love the original drawer pulls on this. They’re perfect!🌸
I did this last year but off white over stained wood. It was fine but I need to do it again using a dark blue-ish charcoal. I prefer the wedge make up sponges too, they seem easier to control and rarely seep under the stencil. Plus you don’t have to clean a brush! She’s beautiful, the colour combo was perfect. Thx Katie 👏👏💕

Same here. I did the same thing. Dark wood definitely makes a difference. Gorgeous
Oh Katie I think it turned out great. Love the black color not to dark not to blue just beautiful. Well done.
Another stunning piece. I love how you are willing to stretch yourself to try out different techniques and looks. The results always have the class & quality of a true K Scott piece. 💖
Gorgeous. Your stenciling technique is great! It looks so Moroccan. I can’t wait to see the geometric design. Stenciling is not easy, but you share great tips. Thanks.
This is really incredible! Beautiful way to give your Grandmother's vanity new life.
This is seriously a piece of art…I can imagine the level of pride you must feel!!! I hope you keep this one!!!
Omg so incredibly gorgeous!! Please, please, please keep this piece for yourself. You did your beautiful, wonderful, Grandmother proud!!🙂😊💗❤💗❤🙌🏽👍🏾🙌🏽👍🏾🥂🍾
Patience is definitely needed with stencils. I stenciled our lanai concrete floor in a tile look. I finished the first two and thought what have I done! She looks pretty. You did a great job 👏🏻
Once again, it's beautiful! Katie, don't stifle your perfectionism - it's part of your creativity. Love the piece. Let us know what you sell it for.
1. Use temporary stencil adhesive. Better seal for less bleeding. 2. First use Mod-Podge or base color with stencil then use your accent color. This preventive layer masks any bleeding. These 2 tips will help greatly with stencil success! In the end those drawer pulls worked wonderfully with the stencil design that you chose. They blended in so well that they almost seemed camouflaged. I hope that you kept this piece since it was your grandmother's. TFS, be 🙏🏼 blessed and stay 😷 safe.
This is so pretty I’ve wanted to do a piece with the inlays but looks very labor intensive
From: We Live the Lives We Are Taught.... The Old Mistress gathered her tools and was ready to create. She had learned her art from her Auntie and now was set to pass on her skills to her little Katie. Katie watched and slowly began the art with her steady pouncing and delicate touch-- she laboured and strained. Auntie said it was a slow deliberate art and time was counted in days. As the oil was rubbed in and dreamily wiped...Katie slid her fingers over the silky finish and relished the hug she received. This was an old art to save the old bruised pieces in the house. The patterns and colors filled the tiny room with generous warmth. Katie knew she would carry this beauty to her own home in her own time... But now she knew the art and one day she also would share it with another.... Maybe another Katie - in a newer time...! ❤ ( This piece is full of your Grandmother's heart and your soul--- well used and loved )
I love the idea of using the Dollar Store make up sponges. The paint seems to go further. For the stencil brush, it needs to be almost dry, so dabbing on several paper towels is what I have always done. You can control your coverage, from barely there to very clear and bold with doing thin layers of paint in stenciling.
Just when I think you can't possibly get more clever you prove me wrong! I'm in love with this piece! Can't wait to see you do more of these pieces. The hemp oil is perfect for this piece. Standing ovation over here! Lol
Well done again. You tackled a complicated piece for a ‘first time’ use of the inlay stencil but it turned out well. As a fellow furniture painter I appreciate the effort put into the prep as well as the base paint layer. You go the extra mile to paint portions of the piece not seen at first glance, i.e. the underside and drawer surrounds. I will use your tip of sanding the slider rails on my next piece. Genius. THX.
You have convinced me to use the stencil I bought! Thanks 😊
This was so great to see. I’ve been wanting to do this. Your piece is absolutely beautiful!
This is so beautiful. I’ve tried stenciling a couple of times, but this is beyond. I love the way it looks with the hemp oil and the primal color is great.
I love this project! You are absolutely correct about it being a labor of love. It came out beautifully and your patience is amazing!
I love this! I have been wanting to attempt this and even have an inlay stencil from cutting edge stencils. You are an inspiration ❤️❤️❤️ thank you!
Love the colours, and your attention to the details. Well done! 😊👍
Absolutely beautiful! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!
Thank you for showing how you make mistakes and how you deal with it. This was a striking piece which I would never have considered before. Will now.
WOW! Your work is just beautiful! Can’t wait to see what you’ll do next!

Another amazing piece! Fantastic job!!
What a beautiful job! Well done.
Absolutely stunning!
Absolutely beautiful Katie. Well done.
So glad to see you again because this slipped my mind. I'm finding some decent Art Deco pieces to work on and some have missing inlays, etc. and wondered if you knew of a decent source for furniture restoration parts. The one I'm working on has a missing bit of teeny narrow dentil molding and the rest is in pretty good shape so I don't want to just remove and fill the space. This vanity is really snazzy with a sort of ocular theme on the hardware and the giant round mirror. I thought to wash it in a deep indigo with the grain showing through.

I’ve had good results using paper clay to shape smaller bits of missing detail and applying with a good wood glue either before or after drying (although I prefer to glue down before drying as there seems to be a better bond). The stuff is sturdy, dries hard, can be sanded like wood. Perfect for repairs under paint.

@@blackbirdhollow3889 This is inlay with a pattern, not to be covered by paint. A striped sort of pattern with ebony.
This looks incredible! Thanks for the inspiration!
