Stop the presses, because I am so happy that this video was made on someone who has natural 4c hair. I love my natural hair but it is not fairly represented as anything that can be beautiful by magazines, television, or the black community. It is always usually talked about as the worst or something to be ashamed of, or impossible to manage/style and yet, here we are, looking at this video, with a natural girl with a full, and I do mean, full on fro. Makers of this video, you don't know how much this means to me and girls with hair like me. Bravo for making this!

I usually only look up videos on hair that is similar to mine, but lately I've been looking at a ton of videos for type 4 hair too just because it's so beautiful. You guys can do SO MUCH with your hair! I don't think my type2/3 hair could pull off any of the styles in this video :( especially not the fro that i want.. I like when it's a perfect sphere, full of volume like Marshay's. Afros just frame your face so wonderfully, like a halo. I want one so badly! This natural hair movement has inspired me to actually go on a mission to get my mother to go natural now! I'm 20 and I've never seen her without a relaxer. So I'm only judging by her roots (which I know isn't always accurate) but I think she would be 4c!! Also, I agree, it would be so great to see more 4c ladies around, especially in the media xx

Race isn't a tool to keep people divided, it's people skin color... Prejudice, hate crimes and deciding to be 'colorblind' and not recognizing these helps to keep the separation. Race isn't a bad thing. Just the way people treat each other is based on it is.

clint johnson We popularized locks, china bumps/bantu knots, and put our own twist on Western African, American and UK/European styles. And this doesn't include the influence from the many Asian and South Asian countries that have had a role in our styles, let alone what influence slavery had on our hair styles, i.e. wearing scarves/head wraps.

As much as I love her gorgeous natural hair, I'm not sure it's a horribly accurate depiction of the times. My mom had natural hair but kept it straight and "white" for lack of a better word since she was 20 until her death. Although it would be nice if natural hair was embraced, that wasn't always the case

+Alicia Coburg I cou;dn't agree with you more. This video is not a true depiction on the evolution of black beauty over the years... outside the late 1890's late 1960s-70's and current day... the majority of black women wore their hair straight. Just google it. Even before the "process,/ relaxers" black women pressed their hair. I think this video "cute" but not really accurate. NOT to mention, there should be black women doing the model., to keep things really honest.

Wrong. There are other 100 years of Beauty -1 USA with a caucasian lady... So yes it does mean BLACK WOMEN. Regardless of the models name, or your middle for that fact, this video is a representation of women who look like myself regardless if my name is Marshay or not! My opinion laced with obvious facts has nothing to do with MY NAME. OR YOURS. Yet, I still stand on the fact that this video; is a misrepresentation of there of the individuals portrayed in the video. Again, this is a very nice video series, I've watched them all. However, this one in particular is not 100% historically correct. Her name could have been Mantika, Martha, Miokaqua, or Debbie-Ann... It still has nothing to do with the people or group thereof she is representing Cathy.

So glad they ended with natural hair. Out of all the videos, I feel like Marshay and Feven (Ethiopia) must have gone home and just cried over the damage done to their hair. I hope that going forward we see more natural styles across all media platforms. Thinking about the time and money it must take to completely change one's hair texture makes me wanna cry.

Rupaul hey there, there's no need for that language. Some people don't spend enough time around a variety of black people. All they know is what they see in the media which is a huge misrepresentation of black people. Black people like myself come in different colors, hair styles and personalities just like every other race. As long as we know we're beautiful there's nothing wrong with weaves, wigs, natural hair, or even natural mock hairstyles. Now a lot of the reason why the relaxer was invented and made madam cj walker rich is because women could straighten their hair and it would stay straight, i think she made the hot comb too. It was a long symbol of oppression for black men and women to look as "white as they can" until around the 70s where a movement was started to wear their own hair and blackness was cool. Now a days women wear weaves wigs ((I also wear them)) for variety in their looks without causing real damage to their real hair. Now this video shows how beautiful natural hair looks. In fact African virgin hair is the most expensive hair you will ever find because there is not a lot of black women or cutting off their hair. Now, as far as name calling treat others with respect, fighting ignorance with more ignorance makes more ignorance. Know if you take ignorance and put up against knowledge, you have a solution.

Sorry in advance if I offend anyone. As a white man, this may seem funny, but I always found natural Black women's hair much more beautiful and fascinating then then they try and make it look like White women's hair. I'm assuming that you ladies know what I'm talking about. How the Black hair industry operates is kinda depressing. Just be you! Don't do all that relaxing junk, don't buy Indian hair and weave up you scalp, just BE YOU! It's naturally sexy! Does that make sense? I love diversity. When I go to an air port and see all the different people, I honestly FUCKING LOVE IT! Its the closest thing I will ever get to an Interstellar Star Port in Star Trek, Star Wars, Mass Effect, or any other Sci-Fi franchise. Yeah, I just linked being a nerd and alien races to Cultural diversity and individuality. BE WHO YOU ARE! It's beautiful.

Smh i know that Africa is a continent. And i also mean what i said in stead of getting in your emotions over a comment that i made... make sure you know what the other party is referring to ... like you said there are THOUSANDS of different cultures and for that reason alone is why i secluded Africa like i did... if i wanted a specific culture i would have said 100 years Ashanti tribe from west Africa in ghana or Chewa The Chewa, also known as the Cewa or Chichewa is an African culture that has existed since the beginning of the first millennium, A.D. They are primarily located in Zambia, Zimbabwe, with the bulk of the population in Malawi.... I selected Africa because i want them to see the beauty in each tribe from south Africa central west ect... It would be a challenge and it would be a great learning experience.... but seriously tho get out your feelings because the ONLY one who does not know what they are talking about is YOU nydhea mcrae

It's hard to say that those might be really distinctive from the first white woman, as I think they are more of a reflection of American culture & like, "Popular styles" at the time. And even though the hair is kind of different, the styles would more or less be the same. Like imagine the 1940's with White/Black/Hispanic/Asian/Indian or whatever race, they would all be quite similiar. Same for 1920's. (OMG sorry this came out so long I just wanted to explain well~) I think the point The Cut was making was to show a totally different hair, like kinky hair that has to be styled in different ways, when kept natural. :) Not that other people don't have kinky hair...it might be cool to see like different types of hair. Like naturally curly, natural wave, idk the others?

It makes me sad and a little mad when girls with amazing hair make fun of weave:(

You really need to be more confident, I have type 4 hair as well, and I love my hair...your big nose is beautiful, your broad shoulders are beautiful, your short hair is beautiful if anyone can pull off short hair it's us the Africans. Look up your roots and begin to understand where you come from as well I recommend the book "the African Americans". Don't judge your beauty by someone else's standard because chances are those people who like you better with your weave are people who are having problems with their own self confidence. Be patient and careful with your natural hair, because our hair tends to show growth way slower due to the shape of our hair. Remember to love yourself!!!!!!!!!!!

What a hilarious stereotype, the only reason people have 'bad teeth' is if they thought that wearing braces (free from the NHS) was a loser thing to do (and going off the people on Jeremy Kyle, I'm not surprised.) Over here, if your teeth are bad enough for braces, you can get them free. If you're not granted braces, it means that they're not bad enough. That or people fucked their teeth up in later life. You losers are all overreacting.

+sugarholic14 Black women have been wearing weaves since the 1990's. And a weave is no worse than a perm. Perms were the weaves of their day

Ah this made me weirdly emotional, like it made me so happy my eyes watered. As I believe Oprah once said, "A black woman's hair is her glory". Seeing these styles highlighted and the shift into loving natural hair is such a beautiful thing. I just became natural last month and I saw myself in this video. Jumping between all these styles only to end up happiest and most comfortable in my natural state. To those who ask why a relaxer wasn't used as a style, PLEASE explain how a relaxer would be applied then reverted to create the other styles lol. Also weaves are not a singularly black trend. I attend a historically black college where women have weave, braids, fros, and naturally straight or curly hair. There is variety. Anyways, great video.

I like how it ended in 2010s and she just kept it natural. It means African American women are embracing their natural hair the way it is, and that's sending a very positive message :)
