Vag. gio Because Yunan derives from the word Íones (an ancient Greek tribe, along with Doreans, Achaians and Macedonians) and -stan is a typical turkic suffix equivalent to the -land (Deutschland, England) which means country, so Yunanistan actually means country of Íones. And I think is pretty much the second best after Hellas, definitely better than the word Greece.

Nika G thanks for explaining, yeah I agree it's better than Greece, but it's not 100% correct because apart from Iones were also dorians which was a tribe that spread in whole Greece . if I remember well (greece) had something demeaning about Greeks actually most of the Greeks prefer the (Hellenic Republic)

Vag. gio Doreans indeed spread more widely than Íones but another reason that middle East countries refer to us as Yunan is simply because the Minor Asia was called Ionia and not because of the Ionians dominance. It was the closest region to them inhabited by Hellenic people and great sailors and travellers. Also keep in mind that the whole Arab and Muslim world calls us Yunan :)
