    This is what happens when you get Japanese people to do research. You get an extremely accurate video.

    +MehdiGAMES Unfortunately, it is actually extremely inaccurate and its biggest value lies not in the "research" conducted, i.e. reading any book on Japanese fashion in the 20th century, but the fact that they made someone get all those hairstyles done for the video. I am far from an expert on fashion, but studied my fair share of modern East Asian history. Japan was NOT going through the Meiji Restoration in the 1910s as the video suggests. By that time the Meiji Restoration has been going on for over forty years. Even the Meiji Emperor died in 1912, so wherever you draw the arbitrary border of the end of the Meiji Restoration, it definitely did not go on during the 1910s. Japan also was not "beginning to grow" during the Taisho Democracy. That has been going on through the Meiji Restoration (1868 onwards) or, if you examine it a bit more thoroughly, during the Bakumatsu Period (End of the Edo Period). Again, in the '50s we are not in the "midst of the American Occupation of Japan", we are at the very end of it. Those are just the things that are plain out wrong. I am a bit sceptical about the choice of hairstyles, but, again, not my field, so let's leave it at that.

    Dojima Ryotaro From what you are saying some of their information was wrong. But did it really have an impact on the hairstyles chosen?

    As a Japanese, this was one of the most impressive research videos I've seen that discusses the history of Japanese beauty. I think its particularly interesting because we get to hear from a Japanese mum who was once part of this historical wave of beauty. The strong tie with the economical situation with beauty was interesting too!! Just one thing, the wave of the Sauvage hair should be tighter and wavier (based on what I see from entertainment in the 80s and my mother's photos haha) to be more precise with the hair style back in the days. Anyway, I SERIOUSLY LOVE THIS VIDEO

    These research videos are always so fascinating. The inclusion of Japanese counterculture trends alongside the more mainstream trends was a brilliant touch. I feel like Japanese counterculture fashion trends are often misunderstood by non-Asian, Western audiences, so it was great to see you put the counterculture trends in context - that these trends are not adopted by the mainstream public, and are in fact, possibly embraced by the youth as a way to rebel against the mainstream social values.

    Basically what inspired the creation of the Pokemon Jynx(pokemon was created in the 90s). Unfortunately, the pokemon was deemed "racist" in the west for featuring the "black face" stuff and therefore started a controversy... Edit: Turns out this was just a baseless theory. The internet lied to me... Thank you +Twirl Wink for enlightening us.

  • @hugsforastarion

    @hugsforastarion

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Amer Hussien Marsangca Lol, no. Jynx is actually based on an old racist stereotype of black people. The stereotype came from old American cartoons (farm5.static.flickr.com/4151/4989325487_1b709dce2e.jpg) and moved into Japanese cartoons and the Japanese mindset-- she looks like blackface because that's actually the point. As some pokemon were exaggerations of fish or mice, she was an exaggeration of black people. The fact that she has mystical powers is also a part of the stereotype-- the idea of the magical African mystic with voodoo powers and the like. Ganguro isn't blackface, it simply translates to black face (a face which is black) because the traditional light makeup was replaced by dark makeup. It has nothing to do with any races, not white people, not black people, nobody. And Jynx looks nothing like Ganguro. I understand that you didn't invent this theory, and that you're not the first to spread it, but it's kind of offensive and has little basis.

    There's a lot of subcultures in Japan's street fashion, so it's nice to see a few of them here. The one I've always been interested in on a visual level is Lolita fashion. I really like Victorian styles, so Lolita fashions fit right into that cute, ultra-femme, and old fashioned style type that I like. But it's also really awesome to see the Decora fashion here too!
