As a white american studying abroad in China learning Chinese I definitely agree with the researcher's sentiment that American media is overly critical and negitive of China as a whole because of its rising power. Just like with American policy and culture there are some things I think are good and bad with China. In the end we need to be able to separate citizens from the government that they live under.

Maybe because the stylist here is Korean and she may have the assumption that Korean entertainment has gotten a much bigger influence in China than it really has. The Ulzzang look has its popularity mainly is the very young age group mostly teens. The most popular actresses in China today look very different from any ulzzang.
"baby bangs" hahah sigh they looked so bad though... like they're not supposed to look stiff and chopy they're supposed to be sparse but fluffy!! good try though it was probably because they were dealing with fake hair right?

I'm glad you mentioned the opening of Chinese market (globalisation & neo-liberalism) in the 1970s as that was the point where the fashion of China, together with everything else, drastically changed.

I also got the feeling that the China video was thrown together rather quickly. As if this video was obligatory to make so that They don't piss off China. Finding an actual Chinese person to consult about the research (like in the Japanese one) would not have been that difficult of a task. Some of the narration and sentiments are very western-biased.
@ResaChiic

Faerilyn Naushika totally agree with my point! i don't think anyone would've complained if they took a longer time to upload than have some information be kinda off
Like Robin said, there's a lot of great history behind these looks. This reminded me of the exam questions or comparative politics. The model is beautiful. She's known to be a graceful dancer, my friend went to the same dance academy as she did. :D
The 1940s look of the model and the woman in the photograph is incredibly beautiful. The 1990s look on the other hand is really cute.
3:40 - 4:10 wow just wow this is an amazing video, i love how you research its really neat ;-;
Thanks for the great presentation of my mother country's beauty.
You conclusion statement was very good. I know nothing about hairstyles, but this woman has wisdom in her international insights.
Fairly objective narration. Thank you.
终于等到China系列了
Very interesting! Thanks!
I really wish they did a part on Hong Kong. The fashion was vastly different between the 1950s-1990s there... Would've been really nice to have the comparison.

That could be a different video. I'd watch it. They did used Hong Kong's 80s and 90s here though.
i Love those vids
please do the UK! The subcultures we had all through the years are pretty unique to us, especially skinheads of the 80s!
You should do a video on Different Social Media Comments Around the World. Like the sort of thing people comment on sites like Facebook, Instagram, KZread, ect. Also how people react to controversy around the world. I think based on culture people would have different reactions to controversies, gossip, ect. Because things that don't seem like a big deal in one country could be a big deal in another.
70's and 80's are awesome. :)
she is so pretty!
Please do Vietnam. Love the explanation.
Make the hong Kong please😊
so pretty
Can't judge the resources and references, but the make up team did a great job, and that model is pretty. Good works team.
I like the Zhang ZiYi look and do agree that it represents China more, but honestly I was expecting the dyed ginger hair tanned skin look from the Korean wave because that really was the norm. Or perhaps the Feizhuliu scene hair full fringe Japanese style eyemakeup look for the younger generation. Then in the 2010s the black hair pale skin trend suddenly came back but I actually think Chinese makeup trends today look quite different from the Korean look.
The 1980's look reminds me of the music video of the song called 姐姐妹妹站起來 xD

I made this comment on the Korean beauty video as well... and I really do not think you guys should use one Gyopo Korean girl to do all of the Asian beauty videos because it's obvious to me that she really does not know what she's talking about.
@Abby_Liu
5 жыл бұрын
why would that have anything to do with Chinese backgrounds? seems like she knows what she's talking about to me.
Ah, I really like the Research Behind the Looks videos. I wondered why the 50s and 60s had her skin tan. Pale skin is so integral to Chinese ideals of beauty as I know it so I was surprised.

Out of all the research behind the looks videos, this is the one that best showed how history influenced the standard of beauty. I did not like how the other videos just based the look on a particular celebrity in a decade.
the girl who you saw in 2.26 is michelle yeoh when she representing Malaysia in Miss World 1983

The role of the scarf is so interesting. We see it here, in the German video, and the Korea video. It is such an interesting piece that represents so much in nationalism and authoritarian governments.
@jasonnung2645

+BubblyBrainiac Probably because the headscarf is adapted from the traditional dress of peasant women (i.e. tying your hair up in a scarf to prevent it falling into your face when working in the fields), and so represents the proletariat, the "ideal women" of all communist states.
Yay!!
the bangs in 1930's were curled inwards rather than straight.
