Cut Video needs to stop including political movements in their videos if they don't really represent the standard of beauty in those countries. I don't know much about Russian culture, but I find it hard to believe that wearing a makeshift balaclava was considered beautiful in Russia.

+Freak159753 Interesting use of the term "political beauty" - is that what you meant to say? Do you know what you mean by "political beauty"? I would imagine that "most acceptable to society" is not an intrinsic property to "political beauty." Otherwise, Nazism would have been politically beautiful. Otherwise segregation and slavery would have been politically beautiful concepts, because they succeeded due to majority rule. There are objective qualities to political beauty - anything that resists state-sanctioned violence and oppression is politically beautiful, because they show the most compassion for the body politik. And sometimes the most politically beautiful are the ones that receive the most criticism, because they are daring and they are saying something that challenges those in power. I've watched all the 100 years of beauty videos by now and it's obvious to me that they're showing how beauty is a constantly changing, socially conditioned concept - so all these comments complaining about how ugly the ski masks are seem to be missing the whole point.

avelura To me, it is more interesting to see what the majority saw as beautiful in those times or countries than to see what Cut Video thinks is beautiful being projected unto those times or countries. Maybe you or your country sees what the Pussy Riot stands for as beautiful, but I want to see what the Russians see as beautiful, not what you see as beautiful.

This woman knows NOTHING about Russians or Russia. The whole thing is like 85% inaccurate and biased. She probably just googled a couple of pics and read some books written by American authors about Russia and USSR and called it "research". So stereotypical. The reasons she brought up about why people were dressed that way are not accurate. So, not impressive at all. I just don't understand why they didn't choose actual Russian person to work on it? There are plenty of Russians in the U.S. who they could ask for help. Instead they chose recent college graduate who probably barely knows history of her own country.

I strongly disagree with idea that Pussy Riot somehow represent beauty today. Some people may think that they are trying to fight for something decent, in fact, they are mostly attention seekers. Can you imagine situation in U.S. that some revealing dressed girls would come to the church, interact service, dance wild dance and even have sex in there afterwards? That's just nonsense! I was so looking forward to that clip, everything was just perfect, but the last part was such disappointment. I believe that you hurt feelings of so many Russian women by putting Pussy Riot in your clip as representation of modern beauty.

The main problem with using Stilyagi is that the characters were based off a very particular subculture who dressed how they THOUGHT Americans dressed. A very important scene in the movie is when the leader of the hipster group came back from working in America and revealed that people in America dressed normally.

As a Russian American I find the last part featuring "Free Pussy Riot" incredibly offensive. Not only is this representation inaccurate, it is also extremely biased toward the American perspective of what Russian women consider beautiful. Let me tell you, it could not be further from the truth. I wanted to watch this video to get a pure, untarnished look at Russian beauty, NOT to get feminist propoganda shoved down my throat. Another version of this video needs to be made with real historical consideration. Preferably by someone who isn't a women's studies hipster living in her own fantasy world.

As a Russian living in the United States I am extremely offended by this video. Such a rich culture with thousands of years of history should not be "researched" by an incompetent American who's never seen inside the country. For some reason very often Russians are being stereotyped by Americans who think that we are some 3rd world country without much of a culture. AND IT'S COMING FROM A COUNTRY THAT EXISTS A LITTLE OVER 500 YEARS lmao! You think that most Russian trends were influenced mostly by European and American fashion when in reality WE HAVE OUR OWN IDOLS WE DRAW INSPIRATION FROM. Me and my parents grew up watching old classical Russian movies that are still relevant and rewatched over and over today even though they were made in 70's and 80's. I suggest you watch them before making any assumptions. Natalya Varley, Lyudmila Gurchenko, Alla Pugacheva, Vera Alentova and many, many, many other iconic Russian actresses represent our culture and they are beautiful in their simplicity. People had always seen Russian women as different, strong and bold but all you did was westernized us in the eyes of the viewers. Again. As Americans always do. All you tried to do is tie our history to your standards of beauty when in reality only few were influenced by western fashion. Russian women took pride in modest clothing and hard work though they still dressed elegantly. Most Russian women stay true to our country, our traditions and our idea of femininity and beauty. I don't even want to start on the Pu$$y Riot thing at the end. That was just plain inappropriate... and the fact that you chose them to represent the entire current population of Russian women shows how little you know about our culture. I suggest you reshoot the Russian episode using a more competent researcher who's a native and knows what the Russian history is all about. Holla at me if you need help. Peace.

+Anzhelika Suchkova Argee. Those old idols were copying European fashion as well though. But, being put inside the culture it always ended up being much more "russian" than "western". Plus the actual street fashion was waaaay different from what was on TV screen. When I first saw the video I couldn't understand where most of these looks came from. Hmm, maybe I missed something and there ARE actual references? Nope, it's just a randomly picked researcher! Was it that hard to fing a native? And the Pussy Riot thing just fucked me over. The majority of our population has no clue what their performance was even about! And definitely they do not represent russian women and "fighting for the rights" nor they had any impact on the culture. If that's what you think feminism looks like here, Cut, I pity you.

OMG, instead of basing the 2010 image upon real strong female characters like Natalia Vodianova or Chulpan Khamatova, you're deciding to include Pussy Riot. If you're making a video about 100years of beauty FROM YOUR PROSPECTIVE, ok cool. But these girls don't represent Russia. As it was mentioned before, they are just attention seekres, nothing more than that. And let's be honest, their music kinda sucks. And yup, it's not a bad idea to hire a better researcher or at least a native, who would help with the research.

Ng Yi-Sheng Yeah it would be different because if the reseacher focuses on "common" beauty, they would see differents hairstyles and make-up. When you look at illustrated news paper from the first part of the last century, you can see that USA and France don't really influence each other (shorter hair for example). During the 40's, the motherly figure was kind of the trend in Republic of Vichy (its anthem was "Work, Family, Motherland). Maybe they did influence each other during the last part of the 1900's (especially after the WWII) but even then, USA and France still manage to look a bit different :) Also, for now, the trend is more about buns and braids than straight hair (cf all the beuty channel on KZread like EnjoyPhoenix) ! (Also, Florent Wacgnère was right, 2000 = Tecktonic. Not really the same as the American Beauty XD)

То есть образ 50х делался на основе кадра из фильма 2008 года, в котором молодежь хотела выглядеть ни как в СССР 50х, а как, им казалось, молодежь тех годов в США? So sorry, for my english but: the image of the 50s was made on the basis of the frame from the movie 2008, in which youngsters 50s wanted to look like youngsters 50s in USA (as they thought) but not as the youngsters 50s in the USSR?!

These are fantastic! I hope you have one for Hungary. :) I know it sounds weird, maybe, but I'd love to see one that compared 100 years of mainstream beauty in the USA vs 100 years of fringe beauty. The evolution through beatniks, hippies, goths, etc, vs. the mainstream/magazine cover/preppy fashions. I think it sounds like a really fun idea. Or the rock kids vs the disco kids, for the 70's. Maybe some glam in there. I think it would be an interesting study.

Horrible video! Shame Katherine McKeon. If 50 x somebody looked like in this video, they would have been disgraced ... Yes, there were dudes, but not to the same extent! Absolutely mediocre work very disappointed portrayals! Ужасное видео! Позор Katherine McKeon! Если бы в 50х кто-нибудь выглядел так, как в этом видео, их бы опозорили... Да, были стиляги, но не до такой же степени! Абсолютно посредственная работа, очень разочарована представленными образами!

As a Russian I dare say these are extremely glamorous (not how your girl next door looks, but your superstars) and some of these - 1950s and 2010 are controversial and not accepted by the majority of the society. The 1950s one is based on a movie about a subculture, stilyagi, who adored everything western and flashy, like the Japanese Garu. They should have taken a popular pop star of those years or something, it would be very different. The 2010 same, the makeup is fine, but the balaclavas are from an ugly counter-cultural protest. Polina Gagarina would be way better as an inspiration point.

I think, that it was a beautiful idea! Your team is very amazing. But a quality of used make-up is very high in comparison with such one used in Soviet Union. Besides, I'm sure, every Russian was suprised with appearing of Pussy Riot in 2010's at the end of the video. We really never had a such fashion of wearing "balaklava". Maybe it may create one of those Russian myths about bears, balalayka and so on.

The researcher made her job not really good. Especially that refers to current times in Russia. She absolutely got no clue in an actual situation but only read western media. In result, these times images not true and got greased. So the worst marks for images made for 1990-2010 years. 1910s - also not realistic as well, as all our grandma has another look. It would be better to look at the last Russian tsarina Alexandra Fyodorovna - that is the look of that period of time in hairdressing. The best years caught are 1930-1960.
