Upgrading my Miata's Front Brakes & Hubs for Aesthetic Reasons
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
There wasn't really anything wrong with my brakes. But they were kinda ugly. Therefore, I embarked on a quest to replace, clean up, and paint everything you can see behind the front wheels, because my new shiny wheels were let down by the old crusty calipers. But given that my Miata is a 1991 NA with over 140k miles, some of these things were probably due to be replaced anyway, like the wheel hubs & bearings, which are integrated in this case.
So in this video, I take apart the front brakes, hubs/bearings, and dust shields, clean things up, disassemble my old calipers using a bicycle pump, decide I need new ones, paint the new ones red, paint the dust shields black, install new hubs/bearings, install shiny new slotted rotors, and top it off with new stainless steel braided brake lines. As with most things I do, it took too long but looks really nice.

I'm slightly jealous of how clean & rust-free USA cars are compared to UK ones!

It definitely depends on what region of the USA - we have an entire swath of the country that's called the "Rust Belt." But here on the west coast, things are good! I watch a few UK car youtubers and am often shocked at what you guys have to deal with over there.
"Aesthetic upgrade" aka a complete overhaul of the brakes and hubs 😆They look awesome! Great tips for getting those rubber gaskets seated.

Thank you!
Your Miata is beautiful! You are inspiring me to resurrect my beloved 1995 NA ( complete with clearcoat failure... looks bad but drives great). Thanks!
Dude, you are so chilled out, I love it. That hardcore part with the vice grips and then back to smooth music was just excellent lol I'm slowly working on my 2017 Miata in my driveway and your detailed videos are very helpful. I've seen different channels on KZread grow and I can tell you right now that what you're doing here is going to be noticed and appreciated and your channel will grow a lot. You have a very unique and relaxed approach, great outdoor lighting and camera positions to make it easy to follow, and I love that you work outside on the driveway instead of in some fancy garage with a lift, so more people can follow along. Don't change and stay humble man, you're awesome.

Very nice of you to say, thank you! I wouldn't mind having a nice garage with a lift, but I get what you're saying about keeping things relatable. There is a lot you can do in a driveway with a bit of determination!
Just started binge watching videos, has to be one of the most well put together, informative and feel good automotive channels out there!

Thanks! I'm still going to do the rears, eventually...
Glad to see you correctly made those repairs. I watched the original review mainly because I have an 83 SC and for a couple years actually simultaneously owned a gen 1 Miata. So I had both. My 911 is really dialed in and the Miata as well. Loved both cars, but found after a couple years of driving the SC I wasn’t driving the Miata as much and sold it. Put the cash into a few upgrades for the Porsche. No regrets. Both cars are great, but in the end the SC won my heart. Just a great drivers car.

Thanks! I can imagine that a dialed-in 911 would be a much better experience than what I had. But we can't always choose our first experience with something. By contrast, my NA is pretty well dialed. At least I'm not crazy for comparing the two.
i put the same brake lines on mine last week, those damn clips...
Fluid Film is great stuff, I'm useing it for some 25 years on my cars. Great video, editing is spot on 👍👍

Thanks! If you do start a channel, my only advice is to keep it fun for yourself and not worry about cranking out content. It's a lot of work, and not really worth it unless you enjoy the process.
Andrew, great vid as always. Your videos always help me out as I work on my 92 Miata. Great idea using he vacuum caps on the hard lines. Do you remember what size cap you used? More Miata Videos!!!

Thanks! I don't remember the size of the vac caps, I just have a variety box of them. I have more planned for the Miata, still need to do this same thing to the rear brakes & hubs, then I have a full set of poly bushings to install, then things like the front ball joints & tie rods. Those will be videos whenever I get around to it :D
Very clean work on the upgrade .very nice car .

Nice job! However I've doubting the 60ft/lbs on the sliders and 40ft/lbs on the carrier brackets.. is that the right way around?

Thanks! And I see where you're coming from, but I'm going from the factory workshop manual, and that's what it says! Just double checked to be sure.
Great video! Any chance you went down the rabbit hole of steel vs rubber lines, and all of the point/counter-point therein? I'm still on the fence. If Ferrari and Porsche ship their best cars with rubber, why did I put braided steel on my Volvo C30? For all the track days I DON'T do? Ha!
@AndrewDoesCarStuff

Thanks! You make a good point, I don't think it's really neccessary to use braided lines. But neither does it hurt. It's just one of those things that seems like an upgrade "while I'm at it". In theory they should expand less under hard braking and give a firmer pedal, but I doubt it's a noticable difference. One downside is that you can't see the condition of the rubber under the braiding, so it's harder to tell when they need to be replaced.

@@AndrewDoesCarStuffthose braided lines will outlive the car contrary to the rubber ones for sure
Awesome video Andrew. Are you open to doing any LED upgrade? We would like to invite you to do a review video for our Auto LEDs and we just dropped a line via email for inquiring an opportunity, hope hear from you soon
At 11:44, are you using a book binding bone tool?
@AndrewDoesCarStuff

You know what, I had no idea it was also used for that. I just learned a thing! I got this tool from IPD (Volvo parts place). It's plastic and not real bone of course. www.ipdusa.com/products/4801/Multi-Purpose-Trim-Bone-Tool-Genuine-Volvo-9814071
