    If these drains clog, it can cause so many problems from body rot to mildew and mold to electrics getting fried/corroded as water pools where it is not supposed to.

    Why not compare a 1960's mazda with the same vintage Porsche?... Quite a fail comparason IMO... For its time this Carrera was (and still is ) a jem - while 180HP don't seem a lot nowadays, japanese cars (if any!) of that era were 50 HP and nobody wanted them even for free,,, Learn to compare apples with apples

    I had a weird realization a while back that a new Miata spec sheet in physical dimensions and performance is almost the same as a '80s 911....

    I hate when cars are offered for road tests which are not well maintained. You correctly called it, the shifter and the steering wheel both required some bushings. The same with the squeaky clutch which could most like just use a little oil. All are cheap and easy to fix, and would resolve the initial issues that you experienced. But now everyone thinks that 911's have sloppy shifters and steering, and squeaky clutches. This is absolutely not the case.

    Great job. 👍🏻👍🏻 In older German 80’s cars, most cars have a sloppy neutral, so you can find it easily. My friends newer Mazda 3 isn’t so. So when I thought it was in neutral it was still in gear and I killed the engine. I prefer a sloppy neutral gear box.

    Those shift selector seals are a pain. I'm lazy and I usually just end up putting the new seal right on top of the old one (and prey nobody did that before me). It almost looks like you could throw a Getrag 265 in the manta.

  • @georgelouie2758

    LoL. Typical Porsche repair jobs, but the seized up set screw on the shift coupler is a first. The SC is a very civilized air cooled 911 to drive around. Yes, it's not quick by modern standards but mine does bring a smile whenever I drive it. I had a 77s with a 3.6 300HP twin carbed motor and it was an animal. 200tq from 1500 RPM. It really moved! I used to drive an early miata, its was an ok droptop.. But now I need to look for Manta content. I had 72' with a shitty clutch cable that I had to vise grip the collar to drive it around. Really fun car though! Oh the slop in the neutral position is how Porsche intended. You can buy a little spring that pushes the selector to the 3-4 plane (look up Karsten spring). If you want, I have an extra I made up a while ago I can ship it to you.

    If you tried my flawless 1986 Targa with 950 gearbox, it would probbably be more enthusiastic about classic 911. You should add the feeling that you belong to crazy car guys that 911 offers you unlike most other sports car and then you realize that the classic 911 price is not too high.

  • @cartbeforehorse898

    At minimum this car needs a new clutch cable, shifter bushings, steering column issue corrected. Too bad it’s been polished more than it’s been maintained. One weekend with an amateur wrench using KZread could fix this car. The 911SC is one the finest vehicles ever made. Hand built out of thick German galvanized sheet metal. The 3.0 engine is known to be one of the most bulletproof Porsche ever made. Get headers and a Scart exhaust and transform the car into something more wonderful. The Miata is a toy. A fun toy, yes, but no comparison to an air cooled Porsche.

    Lower the rear. I owned a '73 Manta that I bought new from a Buick dealer for a substantial discount when the '74's came out. Buick dealers were just as bad selling Mantas as Mercury dealers were selling Capris. I always thought the Manta sat a couple of inches too high. Drop the back level with the front. It should be an easier proposition than dealing with the front's independent suspension and the probability that you'll screw up the geometry. A Manta needs to be lowered all around.

    For the G body cars a European Carrera 3.0 is better than the SC. Otherwise a 87-89 Carrera 3.2 which has a G50 gearbox. I love all the mechanical sounds coming from this car. As far as value, air cooled 911 don’t deliver a lot of performance for what you will spend.

  • @vwfanatic2390

    I hope to see more Porsche content on your channel, along with your Miata content. Dave Nagel does some nice “drive through the twisties” videos like this, but I love the view over the hood line, and your attention to the sound of that glorious flat 6. My only concern and caution is that you were laboring the engine at low rpm and a gear high through most of the drive. I’m sure you were thinking to “take it easy” since it’s not your car, but laboring the engine can actually create more wear on these engines. It’s also the weakest part of the power band. Had you stayed a gear lower and about 1k to 2k rpm higher, you would have felt more exhilarated and engaged in the drive as it accelerates faster in that engine state. Not read lining it, just keeping it in the higher rpm band. It’s actually less laborious and heat soaking. Oh one more tip from personal experience, check water content of brake fluid and change if even marginal. I boiled brake fluid on that very road. Down shifting and ebraking most of the back to town. Thanks for the 911 eargasm.

  • @AndrewDoesCarStuff
    @AndrewDoesCarStuff14 күн бұрын

    Thanks! And you're right, in hindsight I would have liked to drive a little differently. Though as you know, this is mostly a 2nd gear road, so to go any lower I'd have to be in 1st much of the time, which is counterintuitive to me. I've always thought that you shouldn't be downshifting to 1st when in motion, it's just a gear to get you moving. But maybe not the case with a car like this. Anyway I'd love to have more Porsche seat time, just need to find another one I can borrow!

  • @vwfanatic2390
    @vwfanatic239013 күн бұрын

    @@AndrewDoesCarStuff you are correct about 1st gear, especially with the 915 transmissions in early-ish 911’s & 914’s. I don’t think there’s a synchro between 1st & second. That’s why so many upgrade to the G50 transmission. The 915 transmission in my 914 is super picky, I have to be rolling to get 1st, but no more than 8mph. As you pointed out, the best acceleration torque in early air cooled 911’s is between 4k & red line, which you were being good not to go over 6k. I suppose I tend to drive that road a bit faster and only labor the engine at low rpm when there bicycles or people, and I only rip when I can see that it’s clear. I love seeing someone else’s drive on these roads. Hope to see you at C&C when the Miata club comes through again. In 2019 there were close to 40 Miatas at LaCumbre when C&C used to be held there. I think there was a Miata convention happening somewhere, so they all met there. Cheers!

    People are unhappy because the 911 in the video clearly has mechanical issues which give a false impression of the car. Everybody who has driven a maintained one before knows that the negative things he mentions in the video are only there because of the mechanical issues and are not present in any maintained 911.

    People don't like to admit it, but the G-body cars were an awkward transition period where the tires got wider but before they implemented power assistance to any of the controls, so everything feels super heavy in these cars. The best 911s are really the early short-wheelbase longhood cars, '65-'68. There's a reason that these are so expensive in comparison.

    My first Porsche was a 930 I bought in the 2010s and I too, couldn't understand what the big deal was with these cars. Mine also had the squeaky clutch pedal issue and I fixed it myself, in the process learning that Porsche uses plywood as a building material. Even though your shifter may be tight now, you still have the problem of seemingly 1/10 times not going into first gear starting off the line. The fork won't let you into gear. So if you want to stoplight race that guy next to you, you better have it in gear held in neutral or else you may embarrass yourself not being able to launch.
