Replacing NA Miata engine mounts - Mazda Competition upgrade!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video is the first of a new series on my 1991 NA Mazda Miata! I'm on a mission to go "OEM+" meaning I want to keep the original character of the car, but just improve it a bit in all the key areas and enhance the driving experience in the real world.
In this video, I replace my old, worn out motor mounts with new Mazda Competition (also known as Mazdaspeed) rubber mounts. They are supposedly 40% stiffer than the stock mounts, which should allow for crisper throttle response and better gear changes, while not adding too much vibration or harshness to the ride. I got mine through Moss Miata: mossmiata.com/903-971-competi...
I was able to do this installation by myself in the driveway with a jack and a pair of jack stands. It was a bit tricky at times, and I had to remove or loosen a few engine components to get enough clearance, but in the end I was triumphant. My hope is that the things I learned along the way will be useful to you if you decide to tackle this job yourself.
I am happy with the new mounts, they are a subtle upgrade that help the car feel a little sportier, without ruining the comfort level. I would reccommend them if your old mounts are already worn out, and you want a small upgrade for a mostly street-driven Miata.

    Cool video and fair point with the assesment if it is woth it. One more safety tip perhaps is to put the wheel under the rocker behind the jack in case anything happens to the jackstand while wiggling the car or something. You can never be too safe while working under the car. Great video as always- looking forward to the next one! :)

    Thanks Metod! Good point about the wheels. I did eventually put them under the rockers as well, but it would be a good thing to mention. I was wondering if any of my Opel audience would be interested in this, but glad you enjoyed it :D

    Thanks Oliver! Glad you're enjoying them, even if they aren't about Opels :D Yeah, videos always make things look easier than they really are, but I try to show the challenges and mistakes.

    The only video that clearly depicts a possible solution to that one bolt obscured by the exhaust. Thanks. Did you have to bleed your brakes after disconnecting that line?

    Thanks! It's always a peeve of mine when you can't see what's going on, or important things don't get explained. So I appreciate this comment. And no, disconnecting the brake booster vacuum line doesn't affect the fluid, so there' no need to bleed brakes.

    Great job 👍 Probably the best shifting car I ever had the pleasure to drive. How is the Manta doing?

    Thanks! The Manta is pretty happy, since the suspension transformation. Still need to try to adjust the stance, and it still needs a head gasket, which I'll address at some point. Also thinking about an induction upgrade of some kind, which will definitely be a video if I go through with it!

    Im hearing a bit of a squeaking noise during your test drive at the end of the video that sounds really similar to my car, did you figure out what that might be? My suspicions were the speedo cable?

  • @AndrewDoesCarStuff

    @AndrewDoesCarStuff

    Yes! It was the hood latch in my case. Some other commentors on a different video helped me figure that out. Just needed to clean it up on both sides and add some fresh grease to the moving / metal on metal parts. Hope that works for you too.
