Unlocking the Old Testament Part 58 - Zechariah 2

Continuing his study on Zechariah, David Pawson looks at the question brought to the priest/prophet by the people regarding fasting and feasting which were part of their religion. They were wondering how long they needed to go on fasting to please God. Zechariah quoted the enlightening words of Isaiah which show that food fasting is not the principal kind that God requires, but rather ‘fasting’ from mistreating others, and to be generous and kind. The exile had been the result of their selfishness and greed. Regarding their feasts, Zechariah pointed out that they needed to be celebrations of God. He seeks to give them a missionary outlook. Much of what he said in the 2nd half of the book regarded the distant future. David points out that Hebrews 1:1 says: God spoke to our fathers in the olden times through the prophets in bits and pieces. And that describes these prophecies. He says that they were like jigsaw pieces and that Revelation is “the picture on the jigsaw box lid”, fitting the pieces together. One of the pictures Zechariah presents is of a King riding on a donkey which obviously was describing Jesus. Eventually all the nations will send representatives to Israel to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.

I agree that this amazing series has really opened up the Old Testament. I have attended church all my life and heard many sermons. Unfortunately the sermons were structured to suit the teachings of the particular denomination. So I didn't learn too much. What astonished me is how the prophets preached for so long with such little effect. Hundreds of years and things just went from bad to worse. Maybe my experience wasn't so bad after all. Why don't more people believe. And many of those that do are seemingly justifying the accusation made in Job. That we only serve God because of what we get out of it.

Thank you so much for your explanation of many points that have puzzled me for years. I’m especially grateful for the historical context regarding the Lord’s ride into Jerusalem! That has been a riddle for me since childhood: how could the people turn so quickly against him? Now, it makes sense!

Hi Michael this is John on behalf of David Quoting from Unlocking the Bible book - Luke - by David Pawson: “Luke’s birth narrative also indirectly gives us the month of Jesus’ birth. We are told that Zechariah belonged to the priestly tribe of Abijah. We know from 1 Chronicles which month this tribe was called on to serve in the temple: in the one year cycle they were the eighth tribe out of 24. So Zechariah was there in the fourth month of the Jewish calendar. We know that Elizabeth became pregnant at that time, and that this was six months ahead of Mary, so we can calculate that Jesus was born 15 months later, in the seventh month of the following year at the Feast of Tabernacles (late September or early October to us). The Jews expected the Messiah to come at that feast and still look for him then to this day.” And from Unlocking the Bible - Zechariah: “We read in John’s opening chapter that ‘the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us.’ In John 7 Jesus’ brother sarcastically asks him whether he was attending the Feast of Tabernacles, because that is when they were expecting the Messiah. They didn’t believe in him and they were teasing him, but he said, ‘My time has not yet come.’” ! Chron 24:1-19; 2 Chron 8:14 Michael, there is also a lot on the web on this issue if you need more details. Trust this helps.

There is a problem with your futuristic interpretation. If the Old Testament has not been fulfilled, we are still under the law. “Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished." Matt. 5:17. That is why the preterist view makes the most sense. Your historical background pieces are very interesting, however.

Then what do you say to a good handful, if not the vast majority or Paul's letters? Take Galatians, for example. The whole book is about not submitting to the false teachings of the circumcision party. Galatians 5:1 "For freedom Christ has set us free, stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." (ESV) Paul is talking about not submitting to the yoke of the law. We are not bound to the law anymore, we are not under it.
