Unlocking the Old Testament Part 53 - Nahum

In looking at the book of the prophet Nahum, David Pawson says that time had run out for Assyria. Jonah had preached a warning from God 150 years earlier with great success. But now it was time for judgment. David warns that today people think that God will never be angry, because he is slow to anger, offering mercy first. Judgment on Assyria was good news for the Jews who were living under Assyrian occupancy. Chapter 1 of Nahum gives warning to the capital city of Nineveh; chapter 2 gives details of how it will happen. God doesn’t judge a heathen nation for breaking the 10 Commandments, but rather for their inhumanity, and this applied to cruel Assyria. Less than a decade later, the devastation occurred & Nineveh has never been inhabited again. Why study the prophets? Because they reveal God to us. He is presented as the all-powerful God, in total control of nature and history. In our modern scientific age, we must keep hold of the fact that God can cause miracles within nature and movement within history. Also, God is a unique combination of both justice and mercy. He can change his plans for people depending on how they react to him. An important study.

I found this minister to be one of the more blessed teachers I've heard. My spirit was in confirmation with my intellect when I began listening to David Pawson speak. It all falls in to place as he explains chapter and verse of the books of the Old Testament and I am so thankful I found him. To know God is to know the Old Testament. To know the Old Testament is to know the mind and personality of God. These books should not be considered irrelevant, to the contrary...they are "essential" to learning who our God is.

They are here, but they don't have the same profile as David's teaching ..........we live in a world where there is no Truth and the masses choose to believe pluralism, syncretism and popularism ....... David made a promise to God - that he would go wherever the Lord asked him, and speak whatever message the Lord gave him ....no matter how unpopular that would make him ......... that was an incredible commitment and also also a massive sacrifice to make and at times made David very "unpopular" and even rejected. His wife often referred to "a double visit". David had many engagements where his "invite" to speak was both his first and last. You dont become popular today for speaking the Truth

David Pawson says that the king of Niniveh tried to pray and to fast as the last king during Jonas life, but this time it didn't work : Where do we find it in the book ? Is it the verses 11 of chapter 2 ? Or it is explained in another book ? Thank you for the answer :)

btw, god can relent because he is sovereign. his end game is to restore "eden" that is, to continue with his plan to have an eternal kingdom of a family-he is father, jesus is brother, we are adopted siblings. when he relents, it means that his chosen to be adopted children have chosen to repent and run with his loving plan. those who do not and are obstructive to his loving plan are destroyed.

I'm convinced Jonah got nothing wrong. His peculiar little 5-word message (in Hebrew) doesn't actually mention destruction, per se, but specifically, Nineveh being "overthrown." God had perposed for the Ninevites to be overthrown in their hearts, to repent and turn to God, and destruction was saved for 100 years later. Perhaps this is exactly why Jonah tried to sideline God's Word to Nineveh. Jonah tells us he didn't want to preach to Nineveh because God is merciful. I think it's safe to say his message carried potential for mercy, and he didn't want to give it.

hermeneutical gymnastics = what you just said. overthrown = demolished "In forty days Nineveh will be demolished!" Jon 3:4 The people of Niveveh heard this message correctly. They fasted and repented in sackcloth. Their king issued a decree to repent. No one who heard Yonah thought this meant: Yet in 40 days their hearts would be overthrown - in the sense of changed. That is pure fluff. It was their repentance that caused God to relent. And this is the way people are saved. Repent and believe.

5:45 The Assyrian king tried to fast and repent as they had done under jonah but they had sinned away their day of grace!! What a terrible warning.. -Perhaps I am in this place as frustrating and unfair to me as that would seem -God seems to be the hardest upon those that try to be the most loyal meanwhile "the wicked prosper in their way". Sure theyll be in hell for eternity but the suffering that the rigteous experience here could hardly be considered "good"; Im not sure what God being "good" actually means but i know if doesn't mean all the dripping sentimentality that usually accompanies the definition of that word in the western world -So what if I am essentially "cast off by God", to where I will "not see when good days come", which I havent seen good days come. Ive experienced basic survival but no blessings in career or family at all whatsoever. I've only known great struggle and care giving for disable loved ones so what else is there left for me? No blessing at all God?? But what else can I do except just endeavor to strive harder and be more diligent-there is no other rational practical option. Im just left to sweep up the ashes and bring forth as much as I possibly can. 9:40 says uk lost influence for dropping israel; maybe 16:01 Tennyson 600 quoted 17:01 detailed prophesy 21:01 tremendous break down on judgement being dealt by ones conscience 22:01 corrupted by finance

The word Testament means Covenant - there is the Bible used by the Jews which contains the Old Testament/the Old Covenant - and the additional books which make up the Christian Bible - The New Testament/New Covenant There are two different Covenants -
