Me too 😁😁😁
Big props to you both for showing respirators and spray booth in use during your airbrushing.
Putting on my former painting professor hat here, we call this reflected light. It's essentially a hue that is bouncing off of whatever the color of the ground plane happens to be OR on the vertical planes, the color of the space around the subject. In a typical landscape, you'll have reflected green tones from grass (being very simple here) and blues from our oxygen-rich sky. You've also picked up on the magical quality of violet and magenta which countless contemporary painters have found to be ideal underpainting colors (imprimatura). This works because they tend to contrast so greatly with other natural colors and either warm up or cool down the spaces where the color is allowed to peek through. Greta video and collaboration here Dana.
I always shade with purple or navy blue, my beloved purple shadows
I knew Brent was a closet Canadian, he's just suspiciously pleasant.

When it comes to hockey - for me as a swede i cant stand Canadian sock troopers - but everything else they are always so kind in every way possible. No complaining.

Other than when he tortures fish for fun 😢
Why is it that about the middle of every video my eyes glaze over, I loose track of time and then, after a minute or two, I come out of it with this deep desire to go create a website?
Great video!

Thanks Lyla!!! :)
I tried it and I'm sold. It adds a lot of depth, and it's super easy and quick to do.
Crossover episode, BAAAABY!
hehehehehheehehe
I'm amazed you cleaned the mold lines from the Army Men! That took real dedication, and probably sore fingers when you were done.
loving this crossover! i feel like you both have a very happy and wholesome attitude towards the hobby amd your respective channels

thank u very much!!!!!
I really want to see more of these colorations with Dana and Brent. They are both great on their own. Together they are spectacular.
I will practice having Brent coming to my home for a week and teaching me new techniques.
Goobs told me to come here. Little did he know i was gonna watch your new video anyway 😂. You guys are awesome.
The use of the party hat for conical spray direction was really helpful. As a visual aid it made understanding much much easier. Thanks
KZread really does know what I'm thinking. Was just pondering about this, like a reverse zenithal. Been watching so many videos, including some of yours while trying to figure out how to start using AP Speedpaint. I'll definitely check out Brent's video too. Thank you both, love your channels.
I had to flip a coin to decide whether to watch you or Brent’s first. You won.
Thank you for doing this, it is a brilliant reference.
My favourite colour on the colour wheel: ruddy fur
This was a great video. It had never occurred to me to do this but it’s a great technique. It’s simple but really effective. Thank you!
Great resource as always. Thanks Dana! And Brent of course!
Super happy with this collaboration and both vids are different and worth watching! Please consider more joint conversations and projects!!!!
This is awesome. I love the collab and also the content. Nice work you two.
Dana playing action figures at the beginning and making obvious splodey, reinforces the notion that we're just overgrown children still playing with toys. Excellent!
This will be one of your classic vids
Great and very useful information. Thanks to you both
Cool idea. Thank you for sharing.
Yooo I didn't even know i been waiting for this collab!
Great video learned a lot
As commented on Brent's video I think there's potential for this shading and a Zenathol drybrush. Colours may vary. Interesting and has got my mind whiring.
Thanks for the video. Great technique.
Thank you for this awesome video tutorial!
Seems like purple works pretty well in most situations. Maybe you could always add some medium to reduce the opacity a bit, if it was too strong over a particular colour scheme?
6:53 lol the realization of Brent’s time and work put into this experiment 😂
Another vid for the essentials list of painting primers. Love the work 😊
Saw Brent's video first, surfed on down to yours! Thanks for these new tricks, gonna try them BUT I DON'T HAVE AN AIRBRUSH :(((

Glazing the shadows on via brush seems to be superior for smaller models. You get more control and less of these paint sprinkles
I havent even watched this yet but i have to say this thumbnail totally got me. So looking forward to watching this.

Okay this did not disappoint so much science! loved the video. Now off to watch goobs vid.
Brent sent me here. I think I'll stay a while, it's cozy ☺️
Nice project. Thanks.
You are the best. I just commented on Brent's saying I needed to go back through the video to make notes of my favorites BUT THERE'S A WEBSITE FOR IT??!!
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
My wife and I play the roll-and-write game Next Station: London, which involves subway stations identifies by shapes. Because of you, every time the square station card shows up, I announce "Squaaaaaaaaaare."
Dark plumb purple has been my shading colour of choice for quite some time now. There are a few options, but VMC Armour Brown is pure witchcraft.
Well done
Thank you for a video
Thank you for making these comparison webpages. They are so very handy to see what the paints look like before hand.
Great video :) Getting my first airbrush soon, excited to try this out. Was thinking about something similar already with multiple lightsources from above, could add this to the mix and see how well I can mess up my orks :D
Hell yeah Dana Collabs!
One alternative is to add wash, shade, Speedpaint, or contrast paint to the model upside-down. And then let it dry upside-down. I have even done this prior to actually painting the model. No airbrush or rattle can required.
The day just got good.
Also would really love to see someone use the metallics with these under shading techniques to make different "god-touched" chaos warriors/chosen. Oomph that would be pretty
Man. I wish this video was out two weeks ago. I tried to do an undershot shade using black… and it just made it look like my model was a chimney-sweep who stood over a smokestack too long.

The yellow green might make a good pox walker
Collab of the yeaaaar.
Nice visual aids! Thanks
Two of my favorite hobbyist painters collaborating? Yes please!
This is a very thorough set of tests! Thank you both for all of your hard work putting this together!
Huzzah, very cool
Squidmar has been using this technique for a good while now. Check out some of his stuff from a few years back, he was using a lot of contrast paint.
Wait, DANA IS A FELLOW CANUCK?!? I was totally unaware of this. I have tried using Vince Venturella's trick for universal shading colour by mixing Liquitex Payne's Grey ink with the base colour to make the shade colours. But I might give this a go too. Of course, I have to buy all the AP 2.0 speedpaints first ;) Am I also seeing some Artisan Guild or Francesca Musumeci in there?

yupyup, that's a francesca musumeci amazon... but big! 🙂
Haven’t tried it yet, but I’m assuming will change my painting game
Awesome! I really appreciate the time and attention to experiment and show the results of all the combinations.
Your painting area looks so neat and tidy. Mine looks like I'm some of filth goblin. Well done.
it sounds that purple is the go to for most for me
Yay! The cross-over we all wanted! Great stuff you two
Dang those purple ones really are SO cool! Especially on the blue.
I found your results for shading gold to be the most interesting. Will absolutely be playing around with the purple/green combo. Thank you. Great video, great collab.
The way you say Squuuaaaareeeespaaccceee at the beginning of each video always reminds me of how another podcast would say 'circuitry' in a similar manner (tho with more of an evil villain twist) and that's why I always giggle at the start of your videos!
As I commented on Goobertown... This was a brilliant experiement/lesson, and awesome collaboration!
My two favorite mini painters in one video. There really is a Santa Claus! 😃Thanks for showing us another handy tool for improving our miniature painting! The two of you have helped me improve in leaps and bounds!
I said it over at Brent's channel, but it deserves to be repeated here: this collab felt like being given an unexpected gift. It's wonderful to see you work together! You are among my favorite people on KZread. 😊
Fantastic video. This is honestly incredibly helpful.
Dream team
I'm mad that now whenever i think of websites i hear Dana go "squaaaareeeespacceeee" in my head. Great branding for them honestly.
The crossover episode we've been waiting for.
Didn't even watch yet but Hell yeah I love you two
I did my Hemlock fighter like this sometime ago did top down Cyan blue and hot pink from the bottom up came out so good!
Noted! I would never guessed such an instant good result with such a simple move, impressive! Bravi!
I'm here after watching Brent and again I have toy story army men in my head 😅😅,
Great topic and fun collab! 😄
I was wondering if you could do this with rattle cans
Two of my favourites, the collab I didn't know I needed.
Great collaboration! Keep it going!
my two favourite hobbytubers
I am loving the 'Goobertown Tour'! Brent is showing up at all my fav. 'tuber hobby channels!
Canadian KZreadrs be like : "Hey Goober, get your butt up here for collabs!"
Paynes Grey
I'll definitely need to check out your website to see the images. Will be a great reference!
Both videos complement each other very nicely, well done Dana 👍
I appreciate Brent taking his vacation to do the Great Mini Painter Guest Tour Of 2023.
neat
Seems to me that most of the shade colours that worked well that weren't just darker versions of the same colour were actually on the opposite side of the colour wheel to the base colour, this would naturally desaturate the colour and make it more shadowy.
Will the next collab be snuffles and baby bear?
Amazing colab! Great video guys.
Speed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I prefer the the term "genital" shadow as Marco Frisoni called it
What kind of camera do you use?
Ah look 2 of my favourite youtube painters, painting together ❤
