Achievement unlocked: Having James May geek out about your work which you put hours and hours of work, dedication and thught into. Well earned, as well.
I always tell my girlfriend I would watch James, Richard, or Jeremy and be entertained no matter what they were doing....After watching James open mail, strop and chop carrots, I now know I was right. Nice knife and as always, I love your dulcet tones, James.
Knife guy here, a few bits I notice for those who are interested: •The handle isn't actually wood, but Micarta, which is layers of fiber set in epoxy resin. Looks like that one is perhaps using layers of burlap? •The 'rose motif rivet' is called a mosaic pin. It's not a rivet because it isn't domed or flattened- it doesn't actually pinch the handle scales onto the tang like a rivet would do, the handles will be glued to the steel •The sheath looks like it's probably kydex, a rigid plastic that sets with heat •The blade profile is vaguely similar to a Japanese kiritsuke knife, but the finger choil near the handle is generally used for camp knives and choppers. I'm sure this would be better suited to clearing a path through undergrowth than in the kitchen, and the heft backs that up too Cracking knife though, I'll definitely be looking into the maker!

Pleeeaaaasssrreere make cheesecake James may!! We love you bro! ❤️❤️❤️
Imagine being so proficient at your craft that THE quintessential Englishman says, "That is a proper piece of work, that's really exquisite looking."
This is the most James May thing I’ve seen in a while
Seems a few commentators don’t realise the difference between a chefs- or paring knife and a chopper. An obvious clue is the shape of the blade. This is a tool specialised for chopping and cleaving, not slicing and julienning, similar to an Asian cleaver. Of course it can be used for that too, but this is meant for separating joints and cleaving pumpkins and such.
The handle is burlap or coarse micarta, natural, not dyed. Lol at all the non knife people saying it's not sharp, clearly they are clueless. The blade shape, stock thickness, edge geometry and the big finger choil, make me think it is more of a bushcrafty/camping knife, meant for chopping rather than a dedicated kitchen knife. The knife is sharp, but it splits the vegetables/wedges them open because it has a thicker stock, and a much different edge geometry than a traditional kitchen knife
@firecrow7973
3 жыл бұрын
nevermind the fact that it squishes the veg before cutting into it.
@birdlaw1019
3 жыл бұрын
@@firecrow7973 Read what I wrote. Edge geometry, and stock thickness play a huge role in a how a knife performs. It's like comparing a 4x4 pickup truck (off road) to a purpose built track car. It's not a slicey thin kitchen knife, it was "tuned" for harder use.
James may: Exclaims when unsheathing knife James may: Exclaims again when putting on his glasses Poor eyesight makes everything more surprising

A sheath is simply a protective covering, particularly for elongated shapes. As such it's a blanket term, and not even limited to edged items. A scabbard, by contrast, is typically a term reserved for protective coverings of edged implements and weapons, with particular emphasis on rigid or semi-rigid coverings.

Looks like a knife that was made out of an old file of some sort. Great steel. Guessing it's carbon steel, hence the extra care around water. James, despite the uniqueness of your new knife it looks to me most like a Japanese Nakiri style knife. They don't have that point though. So it really is a cross between a utility knife, some type of chef's knife and a Nakiri vegetable knife. The blade has a unique shape that will allow sharpening for decades to come. Great gift Luke. The rose rivet is a very nice detail.

What a wonderful gesture willey. I too thoroughly enjoy the teachings of james and the older I get I tend to quote him for stimulating conversation. On a recent holiday to Greece I found myself going full James May In the bar one night. I was starting to tell my girlfriend about why the Greeks and Turks have a rivalry dating back thousands of years. I got as far as the Ottoman Empire before she raised her hand to point at a balcony area. I looked up to nothing and asked her ‘what’s up there dear?’ She replied ‘anything but this conversation!’. It was second time she’s made me laugh out loud during our relationship. Still it hasn’t stopped me going full James again.
Really moving moment this was. And a truly beautiful job creating & making this knife. The box he made is STUNNING as well. All jokes & TV/whatever streaming is called aside. This illustrates perfectly just how much you (James) have come to mean to us viewers. In a strange way that I’ve never really heard explained... you sort of become part of our family. Part of our lives. And we adore that as much as we adore you, Mr May. Truly well done, Mr Willey! You’re business is my next stop.I might just be a new customer. That knife sold me!
