Unboxing New Hampshire: What It's Like Living In New Hampshire

Does everyone in New Hampshire hate people from Massachusetts?
Is everyone in New Hampshire a libertarian?
And is everyone here white?
We’ll answer those questions and talk about a lot more! So let’s hop in the car - but we don’t have to wear our belts! Cause we’re drive through and Unbox the state of New Hampshire!
Okay so this looks pretty charming. A neat little town tucked away into the forests. The kind of place where they know your coffee order by heart, and where you can probably get all the local gossip from the maple syrup guy. This is the REAL America, mister. Before it got all screwed up. Of course, nowhere is perfect, and we’ll get to that, too.
New Hampshire sure doesn’t look like much, but it’s actually the 42nd most populous state. There’s actually big cities and stuff to do. I mean, it’s not ALL plaid flannel jacket wearing crotchety gun loving forest dwellers.
It’s beautiful. It’s safe. Kinda boring and very independent. To get a well-rounded view of this state, we need to look at the whole place and then visit each different area. Then we’ll know what New Hampshire is REALLY like.
This is New Hampshire. As you can see, most of the state is heavily forested with small towns scattered throughout, and most of the population and entertainment is on the southern end of the state. But we’re going to begin up here first. Northern New Hampshire is kinda like Alabama with snow.

The best part about NH aside from the fact that every single town has a state run liquor store is the “Live Free or Die” motto. It’s just objectively more badass than every other state motto.

The one complaint I always had with NH liquor stores, the worst hours ever. Some locations close at 8 or 9pm, many others at like 5 or 6pm. Seriously, same hours guys for all locations and it shouldn't close that early. But at least I can get beer and wine anywhere.

I moved there from Florida, Clearwater area, in 2002. Adjusting to the winter was rough but NH has its good points. Didn’t hate it but by 2015 I was ready to move back down South. Where I live in NC is kind of like a good medium between the two. Easy winters but still seasons and not as crazy overpopulated as Florida. Have both beaches and mountains.

Yeah property tax and regulation on real estate are the biggest factors driving people out of the state. You can't keep young people here. I'd rather have a sales tax and do away with continuous property tax than people having to pay $5k a year on a home they already bought.

There should be a way for older people to exempt themselves from property taxes, but the taxes are low compared to states with many tax streams, because when you have 1 tax you pay attention to it. It's also a tax that is more or less depending on what your local government is doing, which you have more control over than state level taxation. And, everyone pays it, renters, home owners, and businesses.

I grew up in New England and have lived in NH for a decade, in multiple regions and cities/towns. This is super accurate overall. I'd add that there are some (small) nice parts of Nashua, but I agree that it's not really a "destination." Also, compared to many other states (and similar to VT), people here aren't very nice and go out of their way to avoid each other for the most part. You definitely don't get into sidewalk chats with random strangers on a regular basis and people keep each other at an arm's length until they have known you for years. It can feel very cold and off-putting if you aren't used to it. Very nice state from April/May through October if you are into outdoors activities, but the bloodsucking insects are no joke. The ticks in particular are an absolute plague.

I live in NH! 'Trashua' specifically. Although that only really describes the downtown portion of Nashua. Much of the rest of the city is very quaint and suburban. For three summers now I have been trying to buy a house in southern NH, but the real estate is becoming a crises here for first time home buyers. I can afford up to $350K, but every single house I bid on I am outbid and I lose even if I waive inspection (because everyone is doing that right now). A ton of people are coming to NH, and no one is leaving, driving the prices through the roof. Hoping I get lucky this summer and can snag a house somewhere in Merrimack, Londonderry, Hudson, Litchfield, Nashua. Then get a vacation lake house in the much cheaper VT lol.
