Unboxing Vermont: What It's Like Living in Vermont

Is everyone in Vermont an old hippie?
Do they put syrup on everything here?
And are ALL the young people leaving this state?
We’ll answer those questions and a whole lot more. So grab a Creemee and hop in the Subaru. We’re gonna unbox the state of Vermont.
Aww Vermont. Or should I say Vermawn. Cause that’s how they say it there. It’s a very small state in both size and in population. A very rural place which is mostly trees, farmland, cows and old white people. It’s a state that’s not understood very well, because not many people have actually been to Vermont. Or know anyone from Vermont. Or have ever seen an actual image from Vermont. It does exist. It’s part of New England. A state rich in history, Vermonters sort of have their own culture and way of life that’s kinda unique. If you’re thinking of moving here, you’re very rare. Cause no one’s moving here.
But to get a complete understanding of this teeny tiny state, we need to look at a map which has the state’s various regions, and then check each area out individually.
This is Vermont. As you can see, there’s actually SOMETHING going on here. A few bright spots in terms of culture and in diversity. Most of what we’ll talk about is stuff that Vermonters know very well.

I absolutely love Vermont. It’s one of my favorite places to visit. I understand they have issues with housing prices and jobs but I found this whole thing to be rude, mocking, insulting and sarcastic. There’s tons to do there, the people are lovely, the nature is gorgeous. The fact that it doesn’t have McDonald’s everywhere and ugly billboards is one of the attractions.

I would avoid New Hampshire for the obnoxious insane libertarian fanatics that are taking over. Screaming "FREEDOM!". And calling everything they disagree with "government overreach". If you need an example look at the disastrous libertarian experiment called Freetown where they took over a small town in New Hampshire and completely destroyed the municipal budget and we're soon overrun with black bears because they thought being told not to feed black bears was government overreach. So those would be your neighbors

Some things to clarify. -There is a Target -I moved to Vermont less than two years ago and it’s been growing, not like some other states, but homes are selling within 4 days for more than the asking price. -Depending on where you live you can get to the New Hampshire/Maine coastline in a couple hours and the beaches are beautiful. -We have Sea Gulls, super weird to see, but they’re here. -Schools are amazing!!! -Maple Creamee(maple soft serve with a higher fat content) is like nothing I’ve had anywhere in the Country. -True Vermonters are the nicest people you’ll meet. -Even with the snow the roads are kept plowed better than any other state I’ve lived or traveled too, which is too many. Having lived in many places, Vermont is in my top three. Highly recommend Vermont!!!

As a flatlander I moved to Rutland in 2004 and stayed for almost 15 years. Made many friends young and old, hippies and Yankees. Vermonters are very community minded, good and welcoming people. The natural beauty of the state combined with its preserved colonial history and "green" environmental policies (no highway or road billboards) create breathtaking scenery. Great place to raise a family or grow old in. Sadly the young people I met who cherished the simple rustic beauty of Vermont life but who were not "educated", white collar workers can not find the type of employment to sustain a good living. Many turn to drugs facing a future without the possibility of upward economic mobility.

@@jmongmon1100 No, and it isn't necessary to insult my intelligence with the Trump reference. I do have a sister that works in the largest hospital in Vermont and the numbers have been spiking. You probably listen to Tucker Carlson to get your information. Using number like 12K has no significance unless you include total population. I live in a single City In NC with a population much larger then all of Vermont and the entire county to this date has had 67 thousand since the beginning with only 444 deaths. It's all a matter of percentages of population. Vermont did stay pretty stable in the beginning but has started to increase more recently. Having lived there for 50 years, I am completely aware of the population centers and the natural geography for social distancing. There is nothing there to draw a crowd. That makes a huge difference. I did word my statement wrong because I meant to say that it was "starting to catch up", not that it had caught up. That was my error.

drove to Vermont from Toronto about 15 years ago with my bro visiting Burlington and Stowe. the most unique place I have seen in Canada and the USA. most places looked like out of a postcard, very clean and natural. Vermonters have kept a way of life that has disappeared almost everywhere else but it's sad that the middle class is leaving and it's either the wealthy or the welfare living there which seems to be a trend in lots of places these days. I would love to visit soon and go around the entire state this time.

I've lived in Vermont my whole life. Vermont is the prettiest and cleanest state in the entire United States. I know this as I've traveled almost all 50 states. We Vermonters love our neighbors and communities and enjoy helping others and spending time with people whom we are not related too. We have beautiful lakes and ponds that many of us spend every day at in the summer, breathing in the freshest air in the usa and swimming in the cleanest bodies of water. While it does get very cold in the winter, the warm summers make up for it. We are not all the same, not everyone is into drugs, or a hippie, or reserved. We are also the most loving state. We welcome everyone from everywhere and show them all love and respect. We are definitely not all libs and I resent that many think the entire state is all liberals.. 🤔

That would be the NorthEast Kingdom :) My favorite part of Vermont :) 2:30 I'm so glad others aren't wanting to go there :) I've watched too much of my relative's farmland develop into housing projects, and the farmhouses used as bed and breakfasts. It's no longer the Vermont that I grew up knowing. I miss it. The way it was that is. Our family farm was sold to a physician in retirement, I wanted to stop in, say hello, and get permission to look over the barn my great grandfather built. He shut the door on us after simply saying NO. Welcome to the NEW Vermont. A haven for some very unfriendly wealthy retired folks.

I found NONE of that. Only fake nice, and ignorance, especially if your life doesn't revolve around kids. Also, no where to swim unless you have friends on the lake or a boat. The first time I visited was in 2005, I didn't know what to expect. I had never been North of NYC, I'm a straight up city boy, and being of color, I was kind of nervous. After 1 day that nervousness was gone, I absolutely fell in love with the place; and it was Mud Season. The people are so laid back and nice, but will tell you what's on their minds with no filter. I love the whole vibe and attitude of the people. I try to make it up there to visit my now adopted family at least once a year. Not really looking forward to the Winters, but on the plus side, I do own a Subaru Forester. Lol.

I know NH is an overall better state to live in then Vermont but for me Vermont is better. The mountains and landscape is nicer, the people far friendlier, and the housing is nicer and just a bit cheaper. Of course your lifestyle and outlook will greatly be effected living in either state. I'd love to retire out west but Vermont is looking better each day especially growing up 2 states away. Killington is the best ski mountain and there is a ski mountain for anyone looking for great terrain and snow mountain lodging. The only downside is taxes, liberals and lack of opportunities for the younger generation and elderly without any spare income, extended education or desired skill set. If you have a little nest egg and can deal with the winters and aforementioned, welcome home ✌🏽❤ 🇺🇲

I just want you to know how much I enjoy your videos. I have watched many of them, even the ones from my home state - NM. You always do a great job putting relevant content in the videos, being specific on why something is great or not so great and being very thorough on your research about the areas you discuss. I love your light hearted sense of humor and your silly anecdotes. They bring a sense of commonality to the viewer and help us to feel like we are all friends, just hanging out. I like the background music as well; its not too loud, not too abstruse, it fits the video perfectly. I also enjoy your side-kick “mappy”, it’s stilly and makes me laugh. I also really enjoy the interviews you do in some of your videos. They are very well thought out and discuss some very important topics. Thanks for all you do and I hope you continue to succeed!

You missed Champ and Creemees!! No but really, I was born and raised here, aside from 7 years in NH I have lived in VT my whole life. I'd say you are pretty spot on with everything! My husband and I can't imagine living anywhere else, (we HATED NH) we call Vermont home. We just bought an 1849 farm home up north in a very small town (less than 2,000 people) and we ABSOLUTELY love it. our neighbors are so friendly, welcoming and helpful. the downside is my husband does have to commute 4 days a week into Chittenden county for work, but I work from home for the largest hospital in the state. Thanks for covering our beautiful state! :)

I'm from western MA and have lived on the border of VT for most of my life. I've had/have many friends in VT and family history in VT (Brattleboro area). Vermont is an awesome state, very beautiful, very green, and the Champlain Valley is about as gorgeous as it gets in the US. I've worked all throughout the state, from Bratt and Bennington to St. Albans and St. Johnsbury. The people are very friendly and I'd move there in a heartbeat (and may at some point).

It's actually pretty evenly split, politically. If it weren't for Burlington (which the rest of the state pretty much hates) VT would be heavily conservative. Most people get the idea that VT's liberal from Bernie Sanders, who the conservatives in VT have a history with and understand a bit better, and so vote for him along with the liberals.

I would love to visit Vermont as it is the top of the Appalachian Trail, and the birthplace of Ben & Jerry's, currently my favorite ice cream brand. Property and sales tax wise, it can be compared to PR, both are expensive. I also believe that lack of crime may be directly proportional to the amount of outdoor activity opportunities for folks to clear their minds out of doing harmful things. I have heard it is not as friendly to people who wants to sleep overnight on the road. You win some, you lose some. Thanks for sharing!
