Unboxing & My Frist Look at a SA 35: Hi-Power Clone with QA issues! - Part 1

A hard to find and can't buy "new" pew pew for me. WAY over paid and quite honestly was a bit disappointed in SA's quality on part of this SA-35. Send it back for repair work or do the work myself...hmmmmm?
So this turned out to be a LONG series as I was initially not going to do the sight repair work "live", but just share the finished results. Oh well, so much for that plan!
This is part 1 of 7 (yeah, a LOT of time consuming work), but got to really exercise my new sight pusher clone.
Again, can't believe this got by the QC process...just wow. Maybe this type of fit/finish work is the new standard for a $700 pew pew.

Absolute tack driver. Never any function issues, just "cosmetic" and poor QA/QC IMO to let the obviously buggered front sight ship the way it was. But that's no longer an issue ;-)

I pre ordered mine. 6 months later it came with a mangled slide. Front sight was smashed into the slide. Two weeks later I had a new slide. It’s been a great pistol. Zero problems. Trigger is great. Just under 5 pounds and crisp. Paid 649. Happy with it.

Nice..I paid a LOT more than $649 for mine, but also didn't have as many issues as yours. Post my "fixes" it's been a tack drive and enjoyable pew pew...just not out of the box unfortunately.

I have an SA35 as well and I'm very happy with it. I've always been a BHP fan and was happy to be able to get ahold of one of these. A few things I've noted are the slide stop/release has some play from left to right and the pistol has a few sharp edges. Shoots fantastic. I gotta say, I love the description of the front sight issue..."this whole front sight is...fu____" LOL! Thanks for the review and I hope you get it all worked out.

The "repair" work was too long for a single video, so I broke it up into a few videos. Final results came out great. Very happy with my work I shouldn't have had to do to a new pew pew. Agreed, shoots fantastic and once I determined POA/POI it was a tack driver.

My first SA-35 likely had a cracked slide - after two trips back tp SA. where nobody could replicate my problem (although I told them exactly how to do so) they sent me a replacement gun, about half a year later. They always told me they are "waiting for parts". My replacement gun has the same issues with the front sight, but not as bad as on your gun. I agree with you - Springfield no longer builds guns, they just try to assemble parts. Your magazine is very different from the mags I had, and have now. Yours looks like the lower part is a something that is added to the upper part. My mags have been "one piece" metal mags. Congratulations - you are both very adventurous, and very skilled, and also methodical.

Based on your SA-35 experiences (and long wait times) I think I made the right call by doing the work myself. Turned out to be about an hour's worth of total time, but too long for a single video, so I broke it down into multiple videos. The last video was my range experience. I now have a tack driver...not so from the factory unfortunately! The magazine I have is not a "standard capacity" that ships with the SA-35 due to my state's...rules, so I have a neutered/compliant magazine.

@@ReLoadersBench Understood. What was the distance to the target? I assume you were using a rest? If I knew how to do so, I would post my own photos here - the front sight is off-set, as yours was, but other than that, there is no visible damage. I too paid much more than the price for the gun, probably about $250 if I remember correctly. I've been telling myself "it's only money", and I enjoyed the gun, enjoyed shooting it, I was satisfied with the (initial) accuracy, and I thought it was a great gun to just take to the range for target shooting. Then I found that it was seriously defective. I don't expect that on my replacement gun. My serial number was 5267, and the new gun is well over 9500, so maybe they have improved? Personally, I don't think a gunsmith ever touched my old gun, just some guy paid to put the parts together. I don't know what serial number range your gun is, but maybe it's even older than my original gun. I "should have" just paid $700, and that's probably all Springfield got from me - the gun store made a nice profit on my desire to get the gun sooner. Back to you, have you been shooting it much since fixing it? After 30 or so rounds, is it just as accurate as for the first few rounds? (That's where my first gun failed). I suspect if the gun is shooting well, you're going to enjoy it at least as much as I think I will, despite the extra work. (I wish they had charged more, and taken more care in building the guns, but then it wouldn't be such a "budget" gun I guess......

@@MikeMyers00 - This target was @ 10 yards. I don't use a rest when shooting pistols, as the range requires pistol shooters to be standing in this area of the range. I would have happily only paid $250 over MSRP...unfortunately the market in my state is what it is and capitalism is alive and well. Not only is SA apparently not "making" (maybe importing or assembling them now) pew pews they are definitely not checking them for quality. Makes me wonder if they are even now shot at the factory to ensure they truly function. My SA-35 is a bit older than yours with a SN of 50xx.

I view the new SA-35 as a "modern" (new/current parts) with slight design changes that make it "just a shooter" to me versus something to collect or shoot rarely. Disappointed in the QC/QA, but after my "repairs", all is well and I'm happy overall with the pew pew.

I bought one back when they first came out. Wanted it for my collection. Paid closer to MSRP on mine. I think around the $699 price. When I bought it I figured these guns would only go up in value. Mine came with an all metal Springfield Mag, front sight similar, barely flush, but a better fit than yours. Similar small punch mark around that pin on top of the slide. The hi-power has gone through many changes over the years, and I think this may be one of the best yet as far as changes to the original design. I am happy with the fit and finish on mine. Still a beautiful gun! Have yet to shoot it. Now, if I could just find a WWII Hi-power that was not $2500 to $3000! ;) Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! :)

Thanks. I spent so much time on the sight work for both sights that the video would be too long for one video. If you see the final results it came out great and I'm pretty happy with how everything turned out. Took it to the range and it's a tack driver (last video segment shows my sighting in or zeroing efforts). DEFINITELY not worth what I paid, but for MSRP this is a winner.

Hopefully SA will have worked out their fit/finish/function issues by the time you get yours. I think they come with 2 mags from the factory, but my state limits our freedoms with the number of freedom seeds we can have in a magazine, so this came with an aftermarket 10 rounder as part of the PPT. I will say this magazine has operated flawlessly however. I should make a follow up video ;-)
