Will this be a game changer for OTA TV, not sure what do you think?

I've heard that the stations that are broadcasting on ATSC 3.0 are just broadcasting their HD content, not anything that takes advantage of the new signal. Once they have 4K HDR content on the air, it will definitely be a game changer. Very few (if any) of the cable providers (and other package TV services) have any 4K content.

@@BrianHaskell78 With the popularity of streaming and now ATSC 3.0, I think this is the end of traditional cable. Once more people see how much cheaper streaming is over cable they will flee cable services. For example, our local cable provider charges $145/mo for service and you cant get same channels from youtube/fubo/hulu for around $50/mo.

@@BrianHaskell78 The ability for ATSC 3.0 to provide 4k HDR content is only the icing on the cake, it is all the other parts that make it a HUGE game changer. There are many differences between ATSC 3.0 and ATSC 1.0, including the default compression scheme of content. By changing the CODEC from MPEG2 to HEVC (h.265 and bypassing MPEG4/h.264... which is why this is ATSC "3.0" instead of a never implemented "2.0"), a higher quality image takes up significantly less bandwidth, allowing more data to be crammed into the allotted bandwidth of the broadcast. I am not expecting 4K HDR to be very prevalent until after the stations have been broadcasting 3.0 for five years due to an absolutely STUPID requirement of the FCC to mandate that broadcasters maintain both their 1.0 and 3.0 signals until they've been on 3.0 for five years. As the FCC is not allotting more channels to be used, in fact they have been REDUCING the allowed channels, the different broadcasters in a region will have to work out agreements for one station broadcasting 3.0 to provide the other station's content as a sub-channel. Until this stupid five-year rule is met, it will be difficult to receive much 4K or 8K content. Another change is that instead of 8VSB (8-level vestigial sideband modulation), ATSC 3.0 uses COFDM. This difference is HUGE in performance improvements. Not only will it provide for more data bandwidth within the 6MHz radio bandwidth allotted to each channel, but it is far superior in multi-path interference rejection. Back in the old analog days, we would see this multi-path interference as ghosting of the image... you would see a faint image of the same thing you are watching that is off by a few milliseconds. This is due to the radio signals bouncing off buildings or the terrain. As the radio waves travel at essentially the speed of light, your main signal is received, but signal may bounce off other objects and still hit your receiver a fraction of a second later. With the 8VSB modulation, this would just cause havoc. You could have a 100% signal strength but the chaos decreases the signal quality, leading to video cutting out or other errors. Because a better method of weeding out ill-timed data, it allows a multi-site, single-frequency broadcast. This could be beneficial to an area such as where I live. I live in the greater Sacramento area. The majority of television market is made up of the upper San Joaquin Valley and the lower Sacramento Valley area, but it also includes going up into the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The major broadcasters broadcast from ~2000-foot tall transmitters in Walnut Grove, CA... in the middle of the valley southwest of the City of Sacramento and northwest of Stockton. This works well for the valley people and those in the mountains that can look down into the valley, but there are many communities in the hills that are in hidden valleys, with ridges between their community and the valley center. The broadcasters can put up a low-power transmitter just for these communities on the same frequency as the main broadcast. Currently, they would have to use a translator on a different frequency to provide a signal to these communities. There are many other advantages beyond this that may not be obvious to the masses, but the masses will benefit.

At the time of the analog shutdown, there was a subsidy that allowed people to purchase the ATSC 1.0 tuners for $30. Households could apply for a coupon to purchase certain models for that $30. Without the coupon, the price was a bit more but less than $100 for the same tuner. These tuners would output the content on either a 480P analog video signal or send the video over an RF modulator to analog TV channel 3 or 4. My assumption is that nearly all ATSC 3.0 set-top-box receivers will have an HDMI output, which is infinitely a better signal than the old analog output. It is this belief that I don't see any huge advantage of having an ATSC 3.0 tuner built-in to any television. If you want that new television but it doesn't have a 3.0 tuner, I'd say go for it, as the external tuner will likely be superior to what is built-in anyway. I'm thinking these tuners will be a bit more expensive than those old tuners but it shouldn't be a whole heck of a lot more.

I'm not sure if Chicago's got any ATSC 3.0 stations broadcasting yet, but I'm getting this anyway. I need a new HDHomerun since my current one is seriously outdated and limited by only two tuners. Even if there's no 3.0 stations here, the tuners in the Quatro gotta be better than the ones I have now. Plus, I wanna try HDHomerun's DVR. Right now I'm using SageTV and I'm looking to get rid of it soon because it's just too fiddly and it also seems to have been abandoned. I also have NextPVR, but I'm not happy with its conflict handling.

From what I can tell Chicago is not broadcasting 3.0 yet but is in the list of "First Markets". They were suppose to start broadcasting by the end of 2020 but due to the pandemic it has been delayed to mid 2021. Have a look at PLEX. In my opinion it is the ultimate media server. It is nice having live tv next to my media library.

I just received my Silicon Dust ATSC 3.0 NextGen TV HDHR5-4K Tuner. I am using it with Android, Apple, Roku and Windows. The setup is accessed with Google Chrome via the IP address and setup menu. Channels are scanned and the Next Gen broadcasts show up with "NG" after the station call sign instead of "HD" for the ATSC 1.0 station. I live in the Phoenix AZ area where there are several stations being broadcast in NG. So far the NG station are not working well. They only stream for a short time with no audio and then freeze up. I have contacted tech support but they have not offered a solution.

It seems SD decided to rename the product to "HDHomeRun CONNECT 4K HDHR5-4K" and is no longer using the QUATRO designation despite the 4 tunners. Maybe this is a function of there not being a DUO model to differentiate or maybe it's because technically there are only 2 ATSC 3.0 tunners out of the 4 tunners.
