    Thanks for the video - didn't even know ATSC 3.0 was a thing, this great news! I prefer my HD HomeRun recordings (to streaming) because it's the best way to blast through those commercials... Years ago I was an "early adopter" and remember the support team from Silicon Dust actually contacting my local station to fix a broadcast problem for me - seems like they do a good job.

    why are only two tuners atsc3? they cant make a atsc3 tuner that falls back to atsc1 for atsc1 content so all 4 can be atsc3? theres a tall hospital between me and the tower so OTA isn't an option for me. i get NBC and one subchannel over the air. i've also heard atsc3 is a way to do pay tv over the air, is that true?

Do I have to get a 5.1 sound system? How would that hook up to the NVidia shield though it's HDMI then would have to have a pass thought for that right? However I have a clear line of sight to the west hartford area towers. So far I’ve had a great experience other than finding out that some hardware doesn’t support ATSC 3.0. Older Rokus and the windows app doesn’t seem to support playback for me.

    I wouldn't think so as it's basically a TUNER. Well, 4 tuners. A tiny box that you plug in your antenna, power, and ethernet. I guess you can do that by feel. It's what software you use with it for any type of disability stuff. This depends on what software/hardware you use along with it. The Box by its self is pretty useless. You can install some software on your PC and get some basic stuff to access it. I don't use their DVR software and what is required for that. I use PLEX!!! Generally, watch on a TV. Though PLEX works pretty much everywhere. It is a Client/Server type setup. You can run it on a iPhone or iPad or an Antenna device, etc. I know the iPhone and iPad have a ton of Visually Impaired features. Getting around on PLEX on the iPad for example shouldn't be hard. Then Airplay to a AppleTV, or my new Samsung TV if you wanted to go about doing things that way. There is so much flexibility in what you want to do with one of these tuners.

The next step is a tuner/streamer option. Will try out the HD Homerun. My question is, is what is the easiest way to integrate a DVR that will allow me access to my ripped (legally) DVDS. I know the HD Home Run allows you to plug in a USB HD. Can I copy movies to this and stream using an app like Plex. I'm trying to avoid setting up a plax server.

The setup is accessed with Google Chrome via the IP address and setup menu. Channels are scanned and the Next Gen broadcasts show up with "NG" after the station call sign instead of "HD" for the ATSC 1.0 station. I live in the Phoenix AZ area where there are several stations being broadcast in NG. So far the NG station are not working well. They only stream for a short time with no audio and then freeze up. I use a quality splitter. Not now as I'm only using one of my 2 HDHomerun's. But I do have a larger splitter ao that my antenna can go directly to 3 TV's as a backup. It's a 4 way splitter, so the 3 TV's and then the 4th to my HDHomerun. I had used a 2 way splitter before right there, and will once again when I get this 4K tuner. It does weaken your antenna signal. You might need a booster, but generally, they do more harm than good. I ended up not having to use one. Use a nice splitter. My 4 way one under the house I also have grounded. I had to add a ground to a number of my power outlets in my rooms as they didn't have a real ground. Older house!!! So I had to run a bare copper wire under my house anyway and it all goes outside next to my house where I installed a very long copper ground rod. My Antenna outside is also grounded to that. I also have a duel COAX grounding block just under my house to the outside. The antenna is plugged into one of them on one side. So that is really the first ground before it ends up at the grounded splitter. The other side of the grounding block I use for my Cable Internet. The cable Plugged into that, and then goes out to my Cable Modem. Doing this in the hope of protecting my equipment. Direct lightning hit, I'm not so sure anything I could do would save my hardware other than completely unplugging everything. Get a quality splitter!!! You're not doing yourself any favors saving a couple bucks.

  • @johntierney3353

    @johntierney3353

    My understanding is that the dot 1 (primary channel) can not have DRM. All of the other sub channels are allowed to have DRM. My prediction is that if you want to watch live sports in 4K then that is going to be broadcast on dot 2 , will be DRM and cost you $5.00 per game. You want to watch prime time broadcast network(ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC) in 4K, that's DRM on dot 3 and will cost you $10.00 per month per network. Whether existing sub-channels will go DRM is up in the air. Can they bring in more money thru subscription than by selling ads. Be sure to read the fine print. SD may, or may not, be able to support every possible DRM that the broadcaster and/or content owner may decide to use.

    Of course all Antenna TV programming now is either 720P or 1080i as that is the standard. 1080P came out a little later for TV's. I had a 1080i TV in the past. It was a 42" Rear Projection (Tube) type TV. As TUBES did Interlace. LCD's and Plasma's are Progressive scan TV's and so can't do Interlace. The early LCD HDTV's were 720P. Plasma's were doing 480P and 720P. Then later 1080P LCD TV's came out and were very, very expensive and then Plasma's. I still have a 50" 1080P Plasma in my bedroom. So these 1080i or 720P or now 1080P TV's internally convert the picture to show it in its native resolution. When you have a 1080P TV these days. It's getting 1080i or 720P from the Antenna or from Cable. 720P is generally used for Sport Channels like ESPN, because the Frame rate is faster, while most channels are in 1080i for the better picture, but it has a slower frame rate. Your 1080P TV these days takes that 720P or 1080i video and auto-corrects it to show 1080P on the screen. A 4K TV is doing the same thing now. Taking that 720P or 1080i and converting it to 2160P. 720P is doing 60 frames a second. 1080i is 30 frames a second. TV's are 60Hz and so show 60 frames per second. Since 1080i is interlaced, that means it first shows the odd lines on the screen and then the even lines on the screen. That equals 60 frames a second. It's fast enough that your eye's don't really notice it. But you can see artifacts. Especially with fast-moving things like a ball. Which is why 720P is used. To get 1080P from 1080i for example, the odd and even lines and combined and then double of the frames otherwise you would only have 30 frames a second when the TV is trying to show 60 frames a second. So each combined frame is doubled up to get to 60 frames. The TV is handling all of this. Then came Blu-Ray. Movies are normally 24 frames a second. So you have that kind of movie look. Some modern movies they've gone some other faster frame rates shown in theaters with special projectors. But mostly it's 24 frames. How that is now on 4K Digital theaters? I assume still mostly 24 frames? But I'm not an expert. But on Blu-Rays they kept the Movie at 24 frames. Very few TV's were capable of showing a movie at 24 frames a second. TV's in the US are 60 frames a second. 60Hz. So how do you get a 24 frames to 60 frames on a TV? By adding a bunch of frames. Most TV's would do it like 11222334445566677888. This 2:3 format. Each frame would be doubled then tripled, back and forth to get 60 frames a second from 24 frames a second. Some people can notice this effect. This is where 120Hz and 240Hz tv's came about. Now you can turn 24 frames to 120 frames evenly. I believe it was something like 111112222233333444445555566666777778888899999. Each of the 24 frames are shown 5 times which equals 120 frames per second or 120Hz. With 240Hz TV's to 240 frames per second. Each of the 24 frames are shown 10 times. I think 240Hz TV's are kind of pointless. 120Hz, I get. You do stop the uneven of 2:3 pulldown, to an even 5:5.

    you don't need a new tv to watch atsc 3.0 content, you just need a stb that is fully compliant with the standard. however, unlike the relationship between the dvb-t standards (buy a dvb-t2 stb/tv and you also have access to dvb-t content), atsc 3.0 is not compatible with atsc 1.0 and unless stb makers make boxes that support both the 3.0 and the 1.0 standards, either under the form of a frankentuner or two separate tuners in the same box, you'd better stay put and only change several months before the switching date or buying that hdhomerun device.

    Some TV's being sold now are not even coming with TV tuners any more. In the early days of HDTV's the HD tuners were expensive and so they sold the HDTV's as HD Ready. They had no tuner built in. You would get your HD from an HD cable Box. There was no streaming services back then. Not even Blu-Ray at that time. But later came the Xbox 360 and it's HD DVD external drive and the PS3 for game consoles for HD gaming and HD Movies. One of the cheapest ways to watch HD Movies on disk as Streaming really wasn't a thing yet. You're not plugging the antenna into the TV anyway. You are plugging the TV into this or into a TIVO or into a Tablo or any number of other devices. They are getting the antenna signal not your TV. So tuner or no tuner in the TV, it doesn't matter. Of course, in this case, you need a 4K TV. As a 4K HDHomerun would be pointless on lower resolution TV's. So for example, my current HDHomerun is being used by my PLEX setup, which is on my higher-end NAS. PLEX has a nice channel guide. Handles all the TV recordings, etc. It also auto cuts out commercials once it's done recording a show. Well my NAS and the HDHomeun along with the rest of my Network stuff is all in a small closet. PLEX is pretty much everywhere. I can run PLEX on my computer. I can run in on a ROKU. I can run it on an Apple TV or a Fire TV. I can run it on my iPad or iPhone. It runs on my new 4K 75" Samsung QLED TV once I installed PLEX onto that.

    Why? There's really no difference in antenna's for HD to 4K. There's really no such thing as a HD antenna and there's really no such thing as a 4K antenna. What matters is the distance and your location from the Broadcast antenna's. In my case because of distance, I have a large directional type antenna on my roof pointed in the direction of all the broadcast antenna's around 40 miles away. If you have a iPhone, there's a great app called Signal GH you can download. It'll connect to your HDHomerun tuners. So long as your antenna is connected to the HDHomerun and it's powered up and connected to your network. It's great as it'll show you where all the Broadcast TV antenna's are located around you. You don't even need an HDHomerun to do that part. You can connect to the tuner(s) and tune into different channels and adjust your antenna when on the roof as an example to get your antenna pointed in the best direction possible to get all the channels you want to get with a strong enough signal. You point your phone in the right direction, see the stations are over in that direction and get into the zone and the just fine-tune. Small, Slow adjustments.

    Since there are a number of comments about not getting an ATSC 3 version when ordering the QUATRO, be aware that it seems SD decided to rename the product to "HDHomeRun CONNECT 4K HDHR5-4K" and is no longer using the QUATRO designation despite the 4 tunners. Maybe this is a function of there not being a DUO model to differentiate or maybe it's because technically there are only 2 ATSC 3.0 tunners out of the 4 tunners. Whatever the reason, the name change is confusing and I can see things getting worse down the road if they introduce other models. And yes, their website is junk.

    I'd love to play with the new HDHomrrun but Boston area stations are still struggling with the FCC repack. Doubt I'll see any ATSC 3.0 broadcast this year. Good to see SiliconDust is being aggressive implementing ATSC 3.0. The Kickstarter raised a lot of money to move early production forward as rapidly as possible and shows a high level of consumer interest. Unlike the digital TV conversion of 2008/9 the FCC has not mandated TV set manufactures include ATSC 3.0 tuners so we are faced with a chicken and egg situation, creating the perfect environment for companies like SiliconDust that make standalone devices.

    You did a demo where you built an antenna to try out ATSC 3 saying it had AC4 sound and wasn't backward compatible, maybe it was your setup? I recently got the new Apple TV and hooked it up to my older TV with optical out and am able to get Apple Music as AC3 sound even though it's AC4, I would imagine with Dolby they will find some way to make it backward compatible.

So it's not ATSC 3.0 but it would be interesting to see if using the optical out on a next gen TV will output AC3 as optical is AC3 only and AC4 would require HDMI 2.1.

You enter your address and it'll tell you if there is any around you and how far away and what type of antenna you should use. I do get some people are out in the country, or a valley that is blocked by a mountain and so the TV signals can't reach you because of that. Maybe you can get away with mounting the antenna even higher? Maybe not. My Mom is basically in the same boat. So uses a dish to get her TV.

    ASTC 1.0 will be broadcast for 5 years after the start of ASTC 3.0 broadcast. That will give plenty of time to get the next generation of this device once the cost comes down and all 4 tuners are ASTC 3.0 instead of just two. Look how slow the ASTC 1.0 rollout was....I am in no hurry. My TV is not even a 4k tv yet. I am in the process of switching to Antenna now, ASTC 3.0 is not even in my area yet.....so once it is fully rolled out at some point I will upgrade my connect quatro I just ordered.
