I used an HD Home Run dual-tuner on my HTPC for many years and loved it (with my cable system). It was connected to my network, like the one Tyler showed, and my HTPC was connected to that network. I could also watch TV on other computers on the network. It always worked like a champ. I'm hopeful they maintain their standards with this line.

As an owner of an original 2009 HD Homerun and HD Homerun Extend here in Wisconsin, I'll be still using them until ATSC 1.0 goes away. I appreciate this video explaining the email I received from Silicondust. I almost signed up for this new ATSC 3.0 model. But I don't have and 4K screens and no OTA stations in my area that will be broadcasting the new signals any time soon.

Every now and then, I check to see what's going on with 3.0 and happened to find this on their website about a week ago and was nice to know they're starting to make consumer products for current TV sets. I also saw another tuner called 'BitRouter' on their website that's compatible for both 1.0 & 3.0. Hope to see more tuners on the way compatible for any HDTV and not just only 3.0 TVs. Thanks for the info, stay safe, and have a good one!

Hey thanks for taking about this. I did find this and will get one hopefully in July. I live close to Raleigh, NC and they are already doing some broadcasting in the 3.0 standard. I already use Plex to consolidate and watch 6 tuners (overkill I know). I figure I will replace the HDHome duo I have with this new Quadro 4K since some of the tuners can do both 1.0 and 3.0 I can just enjoy whatever I get and sit back and wait for other stations to come online with the ATSC 3.0 standard. The company seems to be good at keeping their hardware updated. Keep up the good work.

All well and good. For now, I am satisfied with ATSC. It was such an improvement over the old NTSC. In my area, most of the major networks broadcast in 720p, but all the rest are either 640 or 1024i. I am just glad to no longer have "ghosting" or "snow."

This reminds me of the first broadcasts I used to pickup with a card in my computer. I believe it was made by Hauppauge. The cool thing was it would record the programs to the hard drive long before DVRs were popular. One of the first programs I remember seeing was The Tonight Show in HD.

Forget 4K, all I want is signal stability (so many obstructions when all the towers are just a few miles away...)!! The demo video you did showing the signal working as you drove around and went into a restaurant gave me the greatest hope. I've backed this and will be testing it out with Plex and maybe Channels vs. my current TiVO Bolt. It is all part of the grander plan to get a single front end for all video sources that I'm hoping TiVO Stream 4K or something like it will be able to provide, with time.

I'm in Annapolis about 30 minutes south of Baltimore and 45 minutes east of DC, and we're looking to cut the cord at some point in the next month so it's good to see networks in both cities planning to make the jump already if everything goes according to plan.

People, most likely you are going to want to wait till the market has other competitors. This is only the first of it's kind, and you don't want to be sorry after purchasing it. Like Tyler has stated we are years away from ATSC 3.0 being broadcast on most channels in most areas. I for one would much rather see a device that has more options on the back like HDMI Out, Coax Out, RCA Audio/Video Out, and USB for DVR recording. These additional ports are necessary to make an ATSC 3.0 device compatible with consumer's existing equipment. Currently, this device only has an Ethernet Out. Sorry, Silicone Dust, not enough options to make it a wise choice for 90% of consumers.

Just to add I have a total of six tuners all hooked up threw my home network (and Plex sever). It allows me to have 5 TV'S throughout the house and porch, not counting the TV and projector in the theater room. Perfect picture , no RG6 needed except to the tuners. No argument meant. Just wanted to say they have their place.

I've got this tuner for my setup. Works like a charm. I kind of scrubbed through your video so I don't know if you mentioned it but only 2 of the 4 tuners are ATSC 3.0 compatible. All 4 are ATSC 1.0 compatible. This should extend transition time a little but once your area goes fully 3.0, you will only have access to 2 of the tuners in this model.

Thanks for the video, Tyler. I've been trying to follow ATSC 3.0 quite a bit. I tried to follow all the KZread videos, including yours, from those who went to CES last January. I live in the Phoenix area, which looks like one of the biggest areas in orange, so I will probably get this box as soon as it comes out and see if it works with Plex. I'll have to also check if the box is downward compatible with ATSC 1.0. With the Phoenix area being one of the first adopters, many of the channels may already be broadcasting on ATSC 3.0.

Your mention of the late 90's reminded me of something. Boston area, around early spring of '99, we're hearing news, from our local channel 5, that they're running simulcasting tests on this, "new digital TV band." At that time, since we couldn't receive it, I didn't think anything of it. But fast-forward to that summer, I'm in a local Best Buy. On display, they had the first LCD wide-/flatscreen telly, I'd ever seen (complete w/ a whopping $8,000 price tag!). But more importantly, it was capable of receiving those then-new digital broadcasts. So, after grabbing the (tethered!) remote, I was able to locate channel 5, which was showing (if I remember correctly) a soap opera! Let's just say that I wasn't that impressed!

Here in Europe -specifically Spain- there are test 4K broadcast since at least 2015. The standard employed is DVB-T2, an extension of the DVB-T1 currently in use thorough all of Europe for 1080 and lesser resolution digital tv broadcasts. In the tests, the H265 codec is used, and i saw up to three 4K (each with different HDR implementations) programs in a unique tv channel, thanks to the European channel bandwidth of 8MHz. In Europe only UHF is used for digital tv broadcasts and in recent times the total number of channels has been reduced in the upper end from 858MHz to 706MHz to make room for 5G cellphones band. I have a set top box bought in Amazon for some 100€ (around 110 US dollars) that not only receives the mentioned DTV-T2 programs (besides the DVB-T1 of course) but the DVB-S2 satellite channels too. I tried also a USB dong (for some 40 US dollars) that is able to receive the 4K, but the software only makes for chopped and pixelated video. I hope you find interesting this information.

After reading the Kickstarter page, I was relieved to see that all four tuners in the new Quatro will be able to receive ATSC 1 and, of those, two will receive ATSC 3.0, so one could purchase a Quatro once they're available and start using it right away, even if there are no ATSC 3.0 broadcasts, and be ready for the day ATSC 3.0 broadcasts become available. No worries about purchasing a product that will become obsolete in a few years or investing in a piece of hardware that will be useless for a long time. I had already planned on purchasing an HDHomerun Quatro as part of a cable-cutting project. Now, I'll just wait another three months. Thanks for the heads up!

I think of it as being an extra incentive to getting their four-tuner DVR that I’ve signed up to purchase via the Kickstarter that I can enjoy as soon as I receive it in a couple of months while waiting NC for the ATSC 3.0 Tower to go live during the next year; notice me adding more time there beyond end of this year? :) Delay or not, there’s not much for me to lose on this one! *Guesses:* End of 2020- ATSC 3.0 is in a couple markets showing the same stuff, a handful of high-end units have a tuner 2021- A handful of stations air some 4k content, sometimes. High-end units consistently have tuner. Box is like $100. Some shows announce investment in 4k recording 2022- Some shows are recorded and broadcast in 4k in some markets. Stations take advantage of multiple stations option. Most decent units have a tuner. Box is like $50 2023- Basically all new content is broadcast in 4k in most markets. Almost every unit has a tuner. Box is like $30 2024- Basically everything is 4k. You're a weird old person if you don't get ATSC 3.0. Box is like $10. 2025- Pretty much everyone has switched over. Government will give you three fiddy if you don't have a box yet.

Thanks for review. No 3.0 as yet as the April 20th date for Portland has been moved up to June 9th and I think Las Vegas May 26th, because of the current situation. I have been following this not because of seeing 3.0 as we wont for years on the Oregon Coast, but on the 9th of June (If the date still stands), the stations will be stacking in 1.0, so we will get a lot of new channels as they will be piggybacked. In Portland the CW 32 and MYTV 49 will be used for 3.0. So those signals will be moved to existing 1.0 stations, which we have the translators out here.

I bought a new TV 16 months ago and was really disappointed in the OTA reception. I rescanned about a month ago after a local CBS network switched to ATSC 3.0 TV. Of course the signal strength is the same but the number of channels and viewing is 10 X better. Makes me think this TV has the ATSC 3.0 TV Tuner built in. I'm in STL.

Your TV doesn't have a built in ATSC 3.0 tuner. None of them do yet. Any changes were due to the TV stations moving frequencies from the FCC repack, not ATSC 3.0. You will likely need a converter box in a few years once ATSC 3.0 replaces 1.0.

I have heard that the process of going to 4K UHD content maybe slow, due to the need to re-invest in new hardware/software to work with the new, higher resolution and higher dynamic range. I get that. Much like when ATSC 1.0 started off, few television stations were broadcasting true HD content because most viewers were watching with televisions not capable of higher resolution or in a wider aspect ratio... but, back then just by the mere fact that it was now a digital signal, even though it was standard definition, the picture quality was often better... no snow. I may be wrong here, as I do not know at what point the video process is downgraded currently on an ATSC 1.0, but I'd think that instead of encoding the video into an interlaced 1920x1080 MPEG-2 stream, they could encode it into a progressive 1920x1080 HEVC stream. Right there, it will improve the picture quality of existing content... unless they convert it to the interlaced MPEG-2 stream earlier on in the process than I think. Back when ATSC 1.0 started, many television shows were stuck processing content in standard definition. The process for higher resolution has been around, so some television shows may be much easier to translate to 4K than old shows going to HDTV back in the late 90's to early 2000's. Also, in sports, such as the NFL, they started off with having the "game of the week" by each network, processed in HDTV. Over the years, more and more games went HDTV to the point only the games that only fans of the two teams playing were interested in were in standard definition. I'm guessing it will be a similar process for going from 1920x1080. Back when ATSC 1.0 came about, broadcasters had two options for HDTV... 1080-interlaced or 720-progressive. ABC (along with their sibling ESPN) and FOX chose to go with the 720-progressive because while not quite as high of a resolution, it had smoother motion, which is good in sports. CBS and NBC went with higher resolution, which showed more detail. I do not see any advantage to an interlaced signal in HEVC.

Remember that ATSC 1.0 will still be around for a minimum of 5 years after a station converts to 3.0. So all your existing hardware will be fully useful during that time. More to the point, by the time you actually need to make any change there will have been multiple generations of devices capable of ATSC 3.0. For me, there are no stations implementing ATSC 3.0 in my market this year. So I'll keep on keeping on with what I have and replace stuff as needed.

I'm not sure I understand your question. If you're asking whether you will need a tuner/converter to receive over-the-air broadcasts once ATSC 3.0 goes live, the answer is no. The current broadcasts will not be affected anytime soon. ATSC 3.0 will add functionality and features, but it will not replace existing broadcasts for many years. The device Tyler is showing here is a tuner, but it's meant to work with devices that are not TVs. This device takes the over-the-air signals and converts them to a digital stream on your home network. Any computer or compatible device on your home network can then access the TV streams. So you could watch live TV on your laptop. Other smart devices (tablets, phones) will require an app, and I have no idea what the availability of those is for this device. This device will NOT help your analog TV get a signal.

It will be some football and special events at first and even that will probably be up converted from 1080p. Our ABC station in Houston touted as first in HD for years, but the only thing they had in HD for the news was their skycam they would show a few seconds on each news broadcast. Everything else was SD on the HD station. It was actually our CBS station KHOU that had their news in HD first. For the networks FOX had most of their programming in HD long before others did. ABC was one of the last. I think ATSC will be years away from being significant and even with that I have my doubts that this will take off.

Remember back in 2009 when the government made us sit our old tubes out on the curbside and buy a new flat screen or get a coupon for $ 39.00 for a converter box. The FCC promised that we would have superior images, and sound. Unfortunately they didn’t tell us that reception would be horrible, horrendous, shitty ! Did their laboratories really conduct tests on the transmission of these signals at the reduced power levels. Or was the objective more based on limiting the reach of stations reaching markets 50-80 miles away from their towers. I think that the government owes us a new converter box to the ATSC 3.0 standard. The last one didn’t work. In the analog days I received 15 channels in central Pennsylvania, from as far away as Philadelphia, and Baltimore. Today I struggle to get 7, I’m not counting the sub channels. We just all purchased new TVs that have great pictures, what are we supposed to do, junk them ? Give us outboard tuners, and require the manufacturers to build the next generation of TVs with modular plug in tuners in case their so called laboratories got it wrong again.

Why go 8k when most real life footage shot in 4k doesn't even look much better than 2k? Only things I've seen that shine with 4k are CGI. You have the free stuff like Big Buck Bunny, etc. And then you have Toy Story 4. The only commercial animated production ever done in 4k. HDR makes such a difference that one spends time being mesmerized by the quality of colors that they ignore looking for tiny 4k details. I'd be happy with TV being 1080p60 in 10 bit HEVC.
