Zapperbox M1 ATSC 3.0 DVR with DRM Support Review

Ғылым және технология

In this video, I review the new DVR feature on the Zapperbox along with the ability to decode DRM encrypted ATSC 3.0 channels. ATSC 3.0 (also known as NextGen TV) is the new over the air TV standard with features including better reception, HDR picture, and more. An ATSC 3.0 tuner might enable someone to pick up more channels as a 3.0 signal tends to be stronger and more reliable than a 1.0 signal.

The problem is it doesn't record DRM channels. That's the most important feature, because by 2027 most new TV's will have built-in ATSC 3.0 tuners. But most people will still want a DVR with 4 ATSC 3.0 tuners that can record DRM encoded channels. It's simply too early to adopt this device. Once we get closer to the FCC required conversion to 3.0, there will be several DVR devices that can do this. Also the UI software is primitive. It has a long ways to go!

I'm still LOVING my Tablo!!.... Once all the hardware is purchased (even the antenna), there's NO MORE payments ever. Buy the lifetime service for a one-time fee and get a larger hard drive for storage. I bought a 5 TB USB hard drive and it all works flawlessly! It's not ATSC 3.0 but there's time for them to upgrade the firmware. Even if they don't, the signal where I'm at is CLEAR as day on any channel I want. I just do NOT like monthly fees in any way for things such as this. NICE job Tyler!!!

I know this has nothing to do with the above video but just wanted to give you my story. One, I live in Philadelphia and an antenna that was working for years suddenly didn't work. Everytime I hit an antenna TV station it just went to the home screen. Then I ordered the best indoor antenna you recommended, did a channel scan and it said I picked up an amazing (for me) 55 channels. My previous high was 47. I went to the home screen after that channel scan and all I could get was the logo of each station without any programming. This went on for weeks until I got a notice on my Firestick that said "storage problem. Delete these apps you haven't used in awhile." I deleted went back to the TV and picked up all the programming on all the antenna channels (except WPVI, 6, which I used to pick up fine). Looks like there is a direct correlation between storage on a firestick and how the antenna channels work. I had not been able to find that info on any google search.

Thanks Tyler for sharing this. Zapper Box isn’t to blame, but ATSC 3.0 DRM is a mess. The black screen for 10 seconds pretty much destroys browsing channels to see what’s on. The consortium needs to figure out a way to transmit a low resolution unencrypted thumbnail which can be viewed instantly while flipping through channels. It might not happen though as making it painful to change channels plays into the broadcaster’s hand for keeping you parked on one channel.

Seems like these large media companies that own all the local TV stations "shoot themselves in the foot" when it comes to the ATSC 3.0 rollout. You can't trust private companies will ever do what is best for the consumer. The FCC needs to take charge. I suspect the FCC just doesn't have the "will" to do the right thing.

Hi Tyler, love the video... The delay of the Zapperbox is similar to my older Tablo box buffering the video before it starts to display. I'm glad to hear that for now they can decode DRM. I'm hoping that some of the TV manufacturers like Hisense will be able to decode DRM using their built in Nextgen tuners. I would also wish that Zapperbox would be able to stream to a TV through an app. Right now my antenna connection does not come down to my TV and this is why I chose the Tablo box. Hopefully one day Zapperbox will give you an option of connecting via HDMI or WiFi broadcasting to multiple TV's in your house. Anyway enough rambling.... Just some thoughts...

Recordings would likely remain in HEVC (h.265) until VVC (h.266) replaces it which it will. HEVC is just the minimum startup codec, previous codecs are not allowed but future ones will be. All this being said, I never use Windows as the basis of a DVR just like I would never fly an airplane with Windows running any flight-critical functions. I realize that it is quite a spread.

I bought an HDHR before this video came out and have what I consider severe audio issues with dropouts of .1 seconds maybe 10 times per half hour. I have measured the dropouts with a microphone and Audacity, and it is .1 seconds. I don't have video issues, and it is fabulous for video. I don't have reception issues and my reason for switching was the downgraded ATSC 1.0 resolution to accommodate ATSC 3.0 on my PBS channels. Twice I have noticed in the last 6 months pitch anomalies with a tremor in the pitch where the dominate pitch went from C up to E and back down below C to A# and back to C in about a half second. I have compared the same spots in these programs with the PBS Passport App, and they do not occur. I also have voices that shift erratically between speakers, mostly on commercials. The pitch issue and dropouts occur for me on both an Android phone and the Fire TV Stick. I read a negative review on Amazon that seemed to be the same audio issues on the Zapperbox, which makes me wonder if it is endemic to ATSC 3.0?

I believe what Tyler is saying is that an ATSC 3.0 signal should be more reliable than an ATSC 1.0 signal coming from the same broadcast tower at the same broadcast power. When the time comes that stations that you currently get a strong ATSC 1.0 signal from migrate their ATSC 3.0 broadcast to their ATSC 1.0 tower(still multiple years away, ATSC 1.0 signals aren't going away anytime soon), that is when you will start to see better signal reliability for those channels.

Most 3.0 TV Stations have no sub channels at this time until many people get 3.0 TV tuners and the TV station turns off 1.0 TV broadcasts. This may not happen in many TV markets for many years. LG no longer sells 3.0 TVs.

I didn't feel the need to point it out because I wanted to keep the focus of this video on the Zapperbox review and not anti-DRM rants which I've done plenty of in previous videos. In addition, I didn't want to bring awareness of this flaw to the A3SA since some members watch my videos. It's the same reason I don't make a video about bypassing carrier hotspot restrictions on Android smartphones. The carriers would see my video and close the loophole.

If people can bypass OTA ATSC 3.0 DRM protections by using the HDMI output port to make TV recordings, what is the point to OTA DRM on ATSC 3.0? There is no DRM on ATSC 1.0 TV recordings. Does the public want DRM restrictions on ATSC 3.0 recordings and viewing anywhere on any device? DRM only stops honest people from the freedom to watch TV anywhere on any device without DRM restrictions.
