HDHomeRun DRM & Dolby AC-4

Ғылым және технология

Silicondust HDHomeRun 4k Flex tuners have two of their four tuners that are ATSC-3 NextGen tuners that can receive progressive scan broadcasts all the way to 4k resolution. All of these ATSC-3 broadcasts encode their audio stream using the proprietary Dolby AC-4 codec and some of these broadcasts are even encrypted. Can Silicondust solve these issues???

I miss my HDHomeRun. It was a great piece of hardware to eliminate cable boxes in my home. regrettably cablecards became obsolete and cable providers no longer need to support them. It seems anything the FCC touches anymore isn't that great. Nice video Scott.

Agreed. I do like the Silicondust approach to this. It remains to be seen if applications will be able to provide support.

I don't think the FCC is to blame on this. This is private companies that have come up with all of this drm stuff. FCC seems to wait to regulate it, which is probably the biggest problem. They will hopefully get on this before ATSC-1 channels can start getting kicked off the air. Until then, I'm not sure if it is much point in buying any equipment...

@@4kmusicvideosperformances154 Agreed. Pretty much what I said in the video. I think the MPAA is to blame for the DRM, but the standards committee that thought that AC-4 as a license-able standard for ATSC-3 was a good idea needs to be squarely blamed for that mess.

Informative video. I returned my HD 4k flex because at the time I could not record Nextgen with Jellyfin with sound. At this time is there a simple plugin or process for Jellyfin windows server for this HD Home run emulator so you don't need to all that program scrip in Linix? Just looking for a simple solution until FF has a decoder. DRM is a whole other issue.

We all hope FFMPEG will have a codec soon. In the interim, my video kzread.info/dash/bejne/hJOryZuTnNWvgJs.html shows what you need to do. Sadly, Windows just lacks the ability to do these types of things. Generally, folks get started in self-hosting using Linux to take advantage of all the great solutions out there.

Hi Scott. Take a look at our ZapperBox M1 ATSC 3.0 and ATSC 1.0 decoder. It handles DRM and AC-4. Support for gateway mode and watching on remote devices is coming soon. We will also reach out to you by email.

It does. However it doesn't meet the use case of my subscribers because your device is not network based and has to be dedicated to a single device.

@@scottibyteit will eventually be reverse engineered but honestly I'm beginning to hope ATSC 3.0 adoption fails and we get something open much like Europe has with DVB-T2

@@timmturner I am sure that there will be an open source codec for AC-4 as with most things. I honestly hope that ATSC-3 is a success. They are barely into the implementation and have not had any time yet to implement the collaborative features for 2-way TV over the net. At the very least, the robustness in the signal reception is priceless. I also love the 1080p recordings I am getting OTA because they make ATSC 1.0 1080i seem primitive.

Unfortunately, content companies learned their lessons from the DVD CSS crack, and modern DRM systems are far less likely to be cracked.

So, actually there are already reverse engineered AC-4 codecs. So, it has come to pass.

@@scottibyte I'm not up on all the details, but there are two parts; the codec itself, and the DRM encryption layer. I would expect codec support to show up, despite likely requiring license fees for the documentation or for implementing the patents. But the encryption layer would likely only be able to be cracked if someone got ahold of leaked keys. Now those keys have to be embedded in any licensed device, so at some point those could be cracked, but I believe they also have key revocation methods to counter that.

@pfcrow It will just be more difficult and could take more time but if someone wants it bad enough, it can be reverse engineered/hacked. Video game DRM is hacked all the time.

This device misses the use case for the HDHomeRun 4k Flex. The Zapperbox offers only one or two tuners as opposed to four. Although the Zapperbox provides for AC-4 decoding, the massive limitation to the Zapperbox is that it is not a Network tuner providing service to all of your network devices. The Zapperbox also provides no solution to the DRM issue.

@@frommatorav1 You might be missing the point. The HDHomRun Digital Tuner can receive over the air broadcasts which are free. This video is about one possible way to adapt the AC-4 video on the ATSC3 broadcasts for Plex and Jellyfin. There is no $300 subscription cost amassed over 3-4 months because the broadcasts are over the air and therefore free. The only exception would be the ATSC-3 over the air broadcasts that are DRM encrypted. DRM encrypted content is in the minority in comparison with un-encrypted content.

@scottibyte I'm using a Tablo Quad DVR with ATSC 1.0, and bought a OTA antenna for it. So I get the idea of free OTA TV. I did have to pay $180 for the Tablo, $100 for the antenna and $75 for the laptop 2TB HDD, though. From then on, it's free.

I understand that you're fine with what you already have but it could be a good solution for someone who hasn't gotten a HD Homerun or other Tuner/DVR box.
