    What drives me nuts about Next-gen TV is the broadcasters think I'm going to settle for not being able to record it and watch it whenever and wherever I want to. I either get DVR capability or I'm not interested. I definitely think we need to get ahead of this and not let them control whether it can be recorded, or watched on other devices inside our own home, especially. I also think watching on portable devices outside home should be allowed too but I don't draw a line in the sand on this issue, the way I do on the ability to have DVR capability.

    The trouble with DVRs has always been people fast forwarding through the commercials. If no one watches the commercials, broadcasters have no revenue stream, and if they have no revenue stream, they'll go bankrupt. Then we'll have no OTA TV. The trouble with streaming from home when away from home is that it can get around regional black outs, like for sports. Then, if I have a friend in Indianapolis, I can watch all my Indy Colts games here in Texas without paying for an expensive NFL package. But I'm pretty sure hackers will find a way around these restrictions, and I'm not even sure it would be illegal for someone streaming from their own home.

    @ajlenze8 How to get people to watch commercials is up to the broadcast companies to figure out. There really hasn't been that many shows that for social reasons need to be watched live, so they can talk about them at the water cooler the next day. Some commercials are watched when using DVR, but if they suck, I will definitely fast forward them. The solution is to make better shows and choose better commercials. Easier said than done, but if they can't or won't do that, I'll get the content elsewhere anyways

    Commercials when I was a kid were worth watching. We sang the jingles to Oscar Mayer hotdogs and bologna. How many licks to a Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop? Where's the Beef? When was the last time you saw a commercial for Lucky Charms? They are still magically delicious but now our airwaves are clogged BIG PHARMA. Now kids are watching ads for HIV medications and A1C crap. This is terrible! According to the CDC, as of 2021 only 31,626 people have received an a diagnosis for HIV in the US. Why the hell are we seeing this crap? I am not a doctor. I don't write prescriptions! Our healthcare program is screwed. If BIG PHARMA has this much money, perhaps they should lower the cost of medication!

  • @ajlenze8

    @ajlenze8

    @@frommatorav1 The trouble is that technology is better today. With a VCR, since you had to fast forward the tape to skip the commercial, it took some skill and effort, plus you tended to end up seeing a bit of the commercial or at least watch it sped up. Now, with better software (including AI), you can probably just check a box in your DVR settings, and your show gets recorded without commercials - if it's not happening yet, it soon will be. That's all fine - and believe me, I use every trick in the book to avoid commercials - but broadcasts only happen because of the income from those commericials. No commercials = no broadcast TV, except for PBS.

  • @ajlenze8

    @ajlenze8

    Жыл бұрын

    @@PeterC408 Just because I watched TV for a couple of decades before I started my avoiding commercials "career", it doesn't mean those commercials were better. It's just that we were forced to watch them so many times that they're burned into our brains. "Oh, I wish I were an Oscar Meyar wiener!" LAME! An old woman saying "Where's the beef?" a dozen times in 30 seconds. LAME! "He likes it, hey Mikey!" LAME! Every once in a while, there was a decent commercial, like the Mean Joe Greene Coke commercial, but they were extremely rare. The only consistently interesting commericals were movie trailers, but now you can watch them on demand. The reason there are so many drug commercials, is that the only watchers who don't avoid commercials are old people who still watch like we did 40 years ago, and they have a lot of health problems at their advanced age. That's also why there are a lot of investment and insurance commercials. "Liberty, liberty, liberty... Liberty!" STILL LAME!

    I bought the same Tablo quad tuner DVR you have. I bought a $100 antenna and can get the 4 major networks and a couple other channels in HD plus a couple SD channels. I bought a 2 TB laptop HDD, that I put inside it for about $70. I also bought the Tablo guide service for a year for $50. I can record as much as I want and will never run out of space because I delete them after I watch them. I do have streaming services that are ad-free because I can't stand commercials. I spend less than half what I did with cable, which was a little over $130. I'm on my 9th month without cable and have saved more than I spent on that equipment a few months ago and now it's straight savings. That's what drives me nuts about Next-gen TV. I think what they are going to do is plant DRM (digital rights management - copy protection) in the DRV recordings. It will require that you play it back though the recording device... which, to be fair, is what I usually do but sometimes I want to save it off device, record it for the car. I don't have cable, dish, or even an antenna. I have not watched "traditional" TV for years. I also do not pay for any streaming services. Unless it is FREE streaming, I don't watch. I get all my news and entertainment from the internet from multiple sources so I am more informed than those who only watch main stream media. I don't even like social media, one sided censored crap. I want a movie? I find and download it. I am up to date with world news but really don't have the time to follow anything on "TV". I have been a lot happier that way. I honestly could not name a current TV show or series, and I am happy with that. I do enjoy your channel and watch it regularly. I kind of miss the old Kodi days, but don't even have time for that if it was working like it used to. I have a back log of downloaded movies I haven't had time to watch yet. I have a 65 inch flat screen that only gets turned on if company comes over otherwise I am watching on the PC or on my 40 inch in the bedroom free streaming or off of my PC. I am Gen X and just don't get or care about the current garbage. When you talk about hardware though, you got my attention.

    I agree with this, but one thing I'll say is that ATSC 1.0 uses garbage 8VSB modulation that's very easy to interfere with. Often times using indoor antennas we need to open the window to stop it from buffering so much.

It was an unnecessary complication and not a better experience, just harder to maintain. Small 2TB drives are cheap, I just threw one in my Tablo and now that is fully standalone from the Plex. I do not have a DVR hooked up right now, I just watch TV live (80s throwback? I'm in my 20s haha). There's enough channels out there I like to watch I can find something. Plus fooling with recordings can get cumbersome (depending on the DVR I guess, the one I have is cheap). I'm not going to record a bunch of stuff. Also, a workaround to DRM if you want to record: just record off the analog output of your DVR box (if you're fine with 480i video). Either way there's no ATSC 3.0 in my area thankfully

    We are not getting their channels for FREE!! we are watching the ADVERTISEMENTS!!! They collect revenue for that. That's the business model. Now these greedy Fat-Cats want you to pay to watch their stupid, loud and ever longer stream of commercials so they can make more money. Someone can always "crack the encryption" but now they have made it illegal to talk about it. Remember the video streaming app, KODI ?? It became the new Fight Club. #1 rule, don't talk about KODI. Many famous KZread personalities lost their channels when this came down. Take a look at Blu-Ray. I have all my movies, including Blu-Ray, on my NAS drive and can enjoy them at the click of a button. I would love to make a video to show you all how I did it but I can't! The video would be flagged and the channel heavily scrutinized or shutdown. We often celebrate our freedom, but how free are we really? You better not tell someone how to transfer their movie collection to enjoy on a tablet, phone or modern PC. You want to see the limits of our freedom, try and buy a pair of prescription glasses without a prescription - that's the limit of our freedoms. It's pathetic. Greed indeed. How did they get the "gag-order"? They have made it illegal to "profit from or cause financial harm" to the content owners.

Your box from China most likely does not have the further certification needed for decryption and, like millions of 4K TV sold over the past 5 years, will not work with these new channels.... ever! That is why I say No to encryption, a move that will likely delay the rollout of ATSC 3.0, so I am happy with my current tuner.

See this web page www.mintmobile.com/features/international-roaming/ the only thing I don't like is that I have to buy travel credits but there is no credit check because it is pay as you go. I can't really find any fault with it. Deprioritized?? What my google lookup will be .001ms slower because some people paying $100/mo are near by? I am okay with that for the huge saving.

    I don't mind the network owners having a few pay-per-view subchannels for big boxing matches or maybe first-run movies, but the rest is FCC OTA licensed broadcasting that (as I understand it) they are contracted to supply as free in a major way. They probably want to transition everything that goes to cable companies for re-broadcast to OTA DRM-controlled broadcast channels so they keep it 'in-house', but doing that will cause the loss of rebroadcasting revenue they currently get from selling programming to cable networks.

    The broadcast airwaves are public domain with conditions applied to their use by the FCC, that I agree on. The major media companies could just abandon them for all-internet streaming, but I'd think if they were smart they'd go all broadcast and use a few subchannels for PPV, first-run movies, and similar (there probably is a way to do it in the ATSC 3.0 architecture, I'm not familiar with the whole thing). That would streamline & simplify things for a media company, getting rid of a lot of the intermediary contracts and hardware associated with a cable service relationship and/or internet providers (as 5G services take off). But 'silly me' always looks for the cheapest, simplest way to do things, a concept that doesn't seem to make sense in the world of media moguls.

Most of the stations already have one set up to carry their news. They could carry their entire days programming. I do realize that most of the stations are looking for a way to make extra money but I'm not paying for TV, that's just not going to happen. In Atlanta I grew up with three television stations that went off of the air at 11:00 and I could always find something to watch till then. I wouldn't buy any new equipment now. ATSC 1.0 will be available until at least 2027, and as far as I know there's currently ZERO ATSC 3.0 content that's any better than ATSC 1.0. I have a SiliconDust HDHomeRun Flex 4K, which is capable of receiving ATSC 3.0. When I first installed it, it received ATSC 3.0 just fine, but the channels looked exactly the same as the ATSC 1.0 channels. Now it doesn't receive any ATSC 3.0 channels because of the DRM problem, but who cares if the content is the same as ATSC 1.0. I know that SiliconDust is working on the DRM problem, but since I can still use it with ATSC 1.0 and the content is the same, I'm not too worried. Maybe I'll worry about it again in 2027.

Now is the time to buy ATSC 1.0 when they are selling off existing inventory for $100 instead of waiting for the new $300 tuners to work properly. One of the products I highlighted for Prime Day sales was the 2-tuner TabloTV for $99!! Many people were duped into believing were going to get 4K broadcast for free. I don't blame them, it is nice to have good hopes, always, but that's now how capitalism works. PBS already comes in 1080P with ATSC 1.0, it is one of the few. Local TV stations need ratings and cable pays them to retransmit their local signals. We are going to have a hard time competing with that.

We don't need to regulate our citizens, we need to regulate our legal system, insurance and pharmaceutical companies.

    The last Head of the FCC was Ajit Pai, Verizon Lawyer appointed to rubber stamp every piece of legislation in the interest of Big Business!! Trust no one and question everyone in power! Corruption and Opportunity are so much closer than you think. Regulation brings, certification which adds costs and time that will limit productivity and cut out the entrepreneur. The Internet drove some much innovation because it was unregulated. Now Ajit Pai has removed Net Neutrality, so your ISP can see your traffic, monitor it, store it and profit from its sale. Get mad!

    "Clickbait is a text or a thumbnail link that is designed to attract attention and to entice users to follow that is deceptive, sensationalized, or otherwise misleading." I simply explained why I am not going to jump at the chance to buy more expensive hardware that does not yet support nor may possibly ever support the new standard. The title is exactly what I expressed, so I am going with no, by no means is this clickbait.

    If they take free tv away from Americans there will be a revolt, LOL. Although most likely there will be black market providers for this type of tv too.

    It is hard to black market free. The administration was trying to outlaw VPNs because corporations need to know what we are doing in order to throttle us. We lost Net-Neutrality and now they are very interested gathering data. We have all seen that posting videos of our kids could lead to deep-fake audio begging for money - who would have dreamed that!!? We have no idea what we are giving away!

    Many people don't see anything they want on free tv, especially under the age of 40. I know the media wants to wishcast NextgenTV but it doesn't have the shows a lot of people want.

    @@PeterC408 I don't even need Netflix, just free streaming services with movies (but I assume those services will go behind paywalls at some time in the future).

    poor info with bad takes. you assume everyone is in a good market along with good reception. Most are in the sticks and can barley pull in anything. ATSC3.0 is a way better signal and quality . i receive 3.0 channels where the 1.0 versions i can not.

    Not at this cost. You assume that you'll get coverage in the sticks? Based on what? Hope? Corporate greed needs to stop.

    I'm in Los Angeles with a straight line-of-sight view of the broadcast towers of all the majors (ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, FOX, KMEX, Telemundo, etc) on top of Mt. Wilson (5000 ft up). Almost all have switched to ATSC 3.0 per FCC website but none are broadcasting it out right now or its encrypted. Also, last week I walked into a Best Buy store and the staff knows nothing about NExtgen TVs beyond 'its coming soon.' No labels on the TVs I looked at either stating they were NEXTGEN/ATSC 3.0
