Unbelonging & the Self-Perpetuating Cycle of Shame | Julie Batten | TEDxSalemStateUniversity

We are living in a culture of shame; never before have so many people in America felt such a keen sense of unbelongingness - a sort of literal and figurative homelessness. Professor Julie Batten shares her experience of teaching students to find connection through literature, to tap into the unspoken, the secrets, the source of our individual and collective shame and release it onto the page, to use the art & craft of storytelling to move beyond trauma. Julie Batten is a visiting instructor at Salem State University and founder of the Glass House Shelter Project, a grassroots organization that brings college reading and writing courses into homeless shelters. She is the recipient of the Presidents’ Creative Economies grant from The University of Massachusetts Boston and co-editor of the forthcoming Shame: An Anthology, a collection of stories, essays and poems about shame. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

And now on the other side of homelessness, back in lodgings and my needs met, the shame remains, just as it was there before I lost everything to begin with.

Name it and it will recede, because acknowledging the pain is the first step in letting go. Write it down. Shout it out to a room full of no one. It doesn't matter how you go about it, the end note is disempowerment. Naming it is like shining a bright light in the corners of our closets; once you do, the shadows cease to hold sway with us. None of which is easy, all of which is possible. Wishing you strength, m'dear - and with thanks for watching my talk. :)

The shame IS the UNBELONGING state (its detachment from your loving family) still dwelling in your soul. When someone you love hears that unbelonging they reach for you, they validate your experience with their tenderness and deep understanding, you can grieve it and like the thawing ice in spring you can believe you are worth holding, worth saving, worth the time and attention others want to give you.

@@meghanmonroe we have the families we are born into and the ones we make; if you are without family, seek out community spaces where you might begin to grow one for yourself. It is never too late.

Trauma=shame=addiction. A person who is homeless and holds sp much shame has been dealing with trauma and feelings of shame long before they got in the place of homelessness

Using "TMI" to justify saying something, during a talk on shame, just perpetuates shame

Hey Anthony - Thank you for watching my talk and for challenging the way I start it. To be clear, it was one of the most difficult things I've ever done because I care so much about this topic and I dearly wanted to get it right. From my vantage (because we are all standing in a slightly different place, right?), I truly wasn't seeking to justify anything but rather to acknowledge firsthand my own shame - the pressure to remain silent, to keep that which is unspeakable, unsaid. If shame is couched in our secrets, in that which lives in the shadows of our lives, isn't it apt to begin a talk about shame by shining a light on just such a thing?

I have no idea where I was at emotionally when I wrote that comment, but I was wrong to do so. Your heartfelt talk should be celebrated, not criticized. I suffer from shame episodes from time to time, and I think I may have been in one when I wrote to you.
