Ultra high speed turbine at ONLY 3 PSI!

One of our earliest turbine tests. This is a 8 blade star rotor, we have since moved to Tesla's disk desighn.
I will be hooking it up to an axial flux generator soon! So stay tuned.

    Your Pressure gauge is only reading the the back pressure of the air being restricted by the turbine itself. Your PSI is the line pressure at the tank with the valve closed.

    Yeah, a little. Remember though the inlet restricts a considerable amount of flow as it necks down to 1/4". So most of the pressure reflected is built up because of the nozzle. It's a combination of both.

    @@iEnergySupply I assume you are running an electric air compressor to get a 120 PSI the standard 120 PSI compressor requires a 1 HP motor which probably would not keep up to the turbine over any length of time.A High Speed Reciprocating compressor has an efficiency rating of 72/85% and on the DC motor end the Minimum Nominal Efficiency for 1-4 HP motors is 78.8%. Using the low end the system creates a net power loss of 36.2%. The only way to get a net gain from the setup is to get free compressed air using either a windmill or a Trombe pump. Using the air tank as a battery bank to store energy. Using an AC motor to store air results in a net loss. The system would be good for emergency power in place of lead acid batteries. How long would depend on your air tanks. but it is a better alternative to filling your basement with toxic chemicals and metals. But a windmill would be free energy for sure. A trombe is steady compression but requires a water flow with head pressure.But more reliable than a windmill. Using your turbine in conjunction with a free source of compression you could easily set up an off grid system and because the compressed air is free the DC motor loss would be of no consequence. But your Turbine is a great piece of work.

    I was thinking about this as my company was taking old 1000gal tanks to the scrap yard today. I wonder what kind of power you could get out of a 1k gal tank at 150-200psi. AND we have a 30k gal tank at the shop (industrial propane tank). If you had solar or wind to charge your tank, imagine just 20psi in a 30k gal tank! The if it were pushed to 100-200 psi! It would take a long time to charge, if it ever got that high during normal off grid use.

  • @iEnergySupply

    @iEnergySupply

    I have 1200 gallon tank and its not quite enough, although I have only pumped it up to 120psi and at 300 it would probably do the trick. With 30000 gallon tank you would be set at 200 psi!! Easy! At the moment we are moving past the need for compressed air. We have some updates coming that will help, the biggest problem is the waste heat during compression. You wouldn't have that problem with a tank that large as ambient air would heat the tank up while it is decompressing. We have a solution to the problem of the lost heat using water to store the heat energy from the sun, then running a fluid that boils below the boiling point of the water, using a heat exchange in a closed loop system. The two stage Tesla turbine would extract all the energy from the fluid turning it back into a liquid to be re-heated with the water. This would be the perfect solar system. If you do happen to hook up that 30000 gallon propane tank I would love to see that!!! Just take note that the tank would over time rust and would go bad, you would have to have a way to check for rust to make sure it was safe.

    @@chuckthebull Make sure to have plenty of volume on the inlet and even more volume on the conduits that supply the nozzle. You also need to make sure the volume of your supply is sufficient to get it up to rpm to oppose the supply pressure to see any sufficient results. With air it is very difficult to get your volume sufficient to get it up to speed before efficiency is achieved at low pressures. If you can get it up to speed without running out of air you will notice your air consumption goes down to almost nothing without a load but with higher pressures you won't see this effect. You may have trouble . The nozzle must also be laminar flow, low pressure steam at high volume will make it easier. but you must be safe while doing experiments with steam because the pressure can build up rapidly with little notice. Use pressure relief valve at all times that allows far less pressure to build up then the boiler is rated for. You know you succeed without load when the pressure in the turbine periphery is nearly equal to the pressure supplied.
