UK holidaymakers forced to scrap Tenerife getaways after EU rule change

British holidaymakers are abandoning their winter trips to the Canary Islands due to European Union rules and rising flight costs.
In the last few months, tensions have been mounting between Tenerife locals and foreign visitors. This past Saturday saw a massive 120,000-strong anti-tourist protest in the capital of Santa Cruz, which garnered international attention.
Lisa Robertson, manager of Jags Bar, a Scottish pub in Playa de las Americas, says an exodus of Brits who divided their time between the UK and Spain is already happening. Post-Brexit regulations require UK citizens to leave Spain after 90 days, prompting those with second homes to make more frequent trips between the two countries, incurring significant financial strain.

This is what they locals are demanding from their government, that it: 1) Halts two projects that are ILLEGAL (Hotel de la Tejita and Cuna del Alma in Tenerife) 2) Implements a tourist moratorium so that significant issues are addressed before constructing another hotel (sewage contamination flowing directly into the sea, tourists literally tumbling down hillsides to visit natural areas due to inadequate signage and lack of proper supervision, and many more issues) 3) Implements an Ecotax to preserve natural spaces, which are currently free to access and entirely unprotected (very few environmental agents for the entire area, natural areas are being completely destroy, if we continue like this, they will disappear and we harbour 50% of endemic species in Spain) 4) Enacts residency laws to control real estate speculation that is leaving people homeless. Since the government is not taking action, we have to protest to make something happen. We are not against tourists; as you can see, we want to enhance their experience. If the Government does nothing, what would you do? Stay at home? No, right? Well, that's what's happening. Some media outlets use this situation to only show a small part and promote drama for more views.

Did you miss all the banners and signs in English with slogans such as "tourists go home" "your holiday, my misery" "tourists, stop destroying my home" "tourists go home and stop destroying the land, migrants welcome" and many more such, all aimed at tourists and these videos have gone worldwide so it is clear that a large number of those protesters do think that tourists are responsible for their problems when it is their own corrupt councils and politicians that are solely to blame, not tourists. It is councils and politicians on the Canary Islands that have allowed more and more hotels to be built, others to be enlarged, allowed hotels and other businesses to pay the lowest salaries they can get away with paying, allowed the sea and land to be polluted, allowed the dumping of building waste and other materials all over the Canary Islands, failed for years to built housing at affordable rent and all this has been going on for years through bribery and corruption. We have exactly the same problems in the UK but now, those who can afford to go to the Canary Islands are being blamed for all their problems as well. I do not drink or smoke and have been going to parts of Spain and the Canary Islands for years and spend my hard-earned money in shops, supermarkets, restaraunts, on boat trips and other leisure activities, on entertainment and more, but I will never set foot in the Canary Islands again where I will feel uncomfortable, resented and unwanted by what seems like a large part of the population judging by the numerous anti-tourist banners and signs in English on numerous videos of the protests.

@@duncanbananatyne3890 A start on your due diligence. Its about the infrastructure of the location. Locals = demanding from our government that it: 1) Halts two projects that are ILLEGAL (Hotel de la Tejita and Cuna del Alma in Tenerife) 2) Implements a tourist moratorium so that significant issues are addressed before constructing another hotel (sewage contamination flowing directly into the sea, tourists literally tumbling down hillsides to visit natural areas due to inadequate signage and lack of proper supervision, and many more issues) 3) Implements an Ecotax to preserve natural spaces, which are currently free to access and entirely unprotected (very few environmental agents for the entire area, natural areas are being completely destroy, if we continue like this, they will disappear and we harbour 50% of endemic species in Spain) 4) Enacts residency laws to control real estate speculation that is leaving people homeless. Don't fall for that, please inform yourselves. We are all better than that.

Most go October to end of February or March then come home till guess when? Yup you got it in one...October again... You're treating spending time away like a 4 days on 3 days off work pattern.

Two points to mention in this report , firstly we ( Uk) are no longer in the EU so the rules that used to apply are no longer valid . Secondly it’s the problem of too many tourist hotels and properties that have been used for holiday accommodation this has had a detrimental effect on affordable housing for local people ..which is happening in the Uk ,we are also a small island with not enough affordable housing and too many people . I think Too many hotels and other properties used for holiday homes have been caused by the local government, this should have been avoided in the first place .

It’s not tourism or brexit that pushed up holiday or house prices in Tenerife, it’s the massive inflation we have all been victim of since Covid. Actually inflations been going up since the 2008 housing crash and the Spanish are sadly starting to experience what the UK have had to endure over the last 15 years where wages aren’t keeping pace. Maybe the lack of UK funds heading to Europe has had an effect but now we are not a part of Europe the small percentage of Brits who can afford to visit Tenerife will have to pay a bit more.

It’s about affordable housing for Canarians which is not available because apartments have been sold and purchased by people seeking holiday/long stay options. The local government are looking at ways to tax owners who are away from property any length of time and identify an income stream which will fund local housing projects. It’s not just Brits either, the largest land owners in Tenerife are Germans and Eastern Europeans. It’s definitely not ‘Brits go home’. The locals just want to maintain heritage ownership. Was there 2 years ago, one and only time, wasn't impressed tbh. Seemed to be quite a lot of 💰 Russians settling there, just like in Turkey, they have caused housing prices to jump way beyond anything locals could dream of affording.

Cornwall needs to do the same with second homes = no more homless on the streets and longterm rentals available.

Locals don’t like it when there are housing shortages due to too many foreign immigrants. Where have I heard that before?

I wish these people would holiday in the uk , keep their money in the local communities, not in eu countries that don't want them there.

Tax which it all boils down to. Now they introduce this eco tax which they know tourists will pay but which won’t help anyone (neither the locals or tourists). The revenue will most probably either be stolen or used to fund other things like pensions because of mismanagement of the economy.

People could have applied for settled status during Brexit. 6 Million EU citizens applied to stay in the UK. They don't have to permanently stay in the UK once they have qualified for it. Less than half a million Brits applied for settled status in the EU.
