UK Crawls Out of Recession: The economy is growing so why are we feeling poorer? | Pod Save The UK

The UK is officially out of recession - Rishi Sunak and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt have been banging the drum of the 0.6% GDP growth in the Jan-March quarter, but are things actually getting better?
George Monbiot drops into the studio to demystify Neoliberalism - the invisible economic doctrine that has influenced UK politics and policy since the Thatcher years. George also brings some fresh ideas for how citizens can move away from being consumers and recapture our democracy.
Finally, Nish and Coco eviscerate Esther McVey’s campaign to ban that most dreadful example of civil service impropriety - the rainbow lanyard.

    I can't get enough of Coco throwing out an idea or something she did or experienced and Nish coming back and taking a jab at Coco and Coco giggling away. The whole show could just be this, but that said, I appreciate the work you guys do. It is a bit alarming to see that British conservatives and American conservatives are taking similar tactics to really put the screw to the citizens such as the tactic of playing bookkeeping games with the NHS so as to sabotage it while insisting they aren't effectively underfunding the organization. In a similar vein to Republicans who tried to sabotage the US Postal Service in 2006 in a disgusting attempt to drive it to insolvency and bankrupt it so they could privatize it (guess that already happened with the trains in the UK from the sound of it). They both seem to be in the habit of sabotaging and breaking things in their respective countries in bad faith as if that "proves" that whatever government institution "doesn't work".

    I still can't believe that we have a "Minister for Common Sense" in this country, it sounds like something that would be too silly for a Monty Python skit. Me, Dominic Cummings and Nish all have the same opinions on the Tory Party in that we never need to hear from them again for at least several decades.

He managed to be both funny and actually talk about deep and complex issues clearly and explain them well. More like him! Also I am very please to hear you doing a Trans episode and reviewing CASS in more detail. I was one of the comments you read out about your brief comments on it before and although I still loved your content (clearly as I am still here) I was worried it was all talk about doing a full deep dive and that we would never see it. I glad to see you keep your promises unlike so many of the politicians you talk about. Love ya all.

    Neo Liberalism is another term for Libertarianism which is basically dog eat dog or a rich man's anarchy. I read The Road to Serfdom and it's quite extreme, I will however give Hayek props for his chapter on propaganda and how it works in western democratic society, it's been on full display since last October.

    Why do we still feel poorer? Because all the profits from "growth" goes to the top few per cent. Has done since about 1970. "Growth" itself can come from the impoverishment of the populace - cutting salaries or laying off people increases profits, which adds to "growth". Other negative things for society add to "growth" too - increased debt (= more income for banks), more sick people (= more profits for drug companies), more potholes (= more repairs/sales for cars), and many more. It's not "growth" we need, it's a redistribution of wealth.

    The people's primary idea sounds great however I suspect the political parties would stamp on it if it was attempted in too many places. As George Monbiot pointed out, the Lib Dems tried to stop it in Devon, but they happened to have a candidate who was OK with it. That won't be true in many places.

    Hayek's philosophy sounds like the Just World Fallacy applied to economics. The Just World Fallacy essentially says that good things happen to good people, which sounds nice. The problem is that it necessarily implies that if good things aren't happening to someone, that person must not be a good person _(my fellow logic nerds will recognize this as the contrapositive)._ It thus implies that people should look down on those who are unlucky in life _(or who had a bad start or whatever)_ and exalt those who are lucky, and that events are essentially beyond our control aside from each individual being "good".

  • @GoldnDusty

    @GoldnDusty

    That fallacy is, in microcosm, the cognitive bias which tends to dominate the British (I can only speak for my own country) middle class. The idea that things are in their right place, and that if they're not, there's a greater authority or force which corrects things. The idea of deference to a higher authority on moral questions, in order to deflect the need to scrutinise one's own morals. By ascribing moral worth a value - i.e. by suggesting the market can price tag moral or social good - one abdicates the need to discern good from bad. It's a very sad world view, when you actually dig into it.

    im sorry george but if your opinion that "people make much better decisions than MPs" then explain the brexit vote. and i know the scape goat for that is because people were mislead and there was a lot of disinformation and lies about a whole heap of stuff, but you'd get that if we did move to direct democracy governance rather than representative democracy that we have now. What we need is people able to force a bi-election at any time based on the performance of their local minister. and for the people to force a general election based on the government loosing a majority because of bi-elections.

    You always talk about never forgiving the Lib Dems but what are you never forgiving them for? Now, I’m left wing so I would never vote for the lib dems in a fair system for the same reason I would never vote for the current Labour Party under a fair system but I still feel like the Lib Dems have been done so very dirty and everybody just goes along with it. We had the tories in power and we got a vote on electoral reform (remember that fair system I was talking about before), fox hunting banned, gay marriage legalised and university accessible for all. I went to university before and after the new tuition fees and I can assure you that the new tuition fees are so much easier to handle than the old ones. I have something like £30,000 of student loan debt and I never think about it because it has no impact on my life. It’s a marginal graduate tax that doesn’t affect my credit score and is forgiven after 25 years. Is it free tuition? No. Were the tories ever going to give us free tuition? No. Were Labour going to? They were the ones that scrapped grants in the first place. The lib dems exist for a very simple reason, for tories and Labour to defect to when they can’t handle their party actually doing what it set out to do. All these tories defecting to Labour should be defecting to the lib dems, all these neo lib Labour muppets trying to scrap all their progressive policies and complaining that there’s no money for things should be Lib Dems but they aren’t because people like you keep droning on about the terrible things Nick Clegg did and because nobody stepped up to make the case for electoral reform when the lib dems fell on their sword to make electoral reform happen

If you are very poor and don't want to work, you can be one of the generations where you can live a good life, and older life with all the necessities as well as some luxuries without ever doing any work, in the same tone, some one extremely rich (the Sunak's) can continue to take advantage of this country whilst paying the lowest amount of tax in comparison of their earnings...
